Northern Ireland young gun ready to make most of ‘family environment' after sealing loan move to League One club
He spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Colchester United, making 32 appearances in League Two.
'There seems like a real family environment here with a strong bond amongst the players and staff. I feel like this is a club where I can really contribute and develop,' McDonnell said.
'I've previously spoken to Kyle and Joe and they've said nothing but great things about the club.'
McDonnell scooped Colchester's Young Player of the Season accolade and also made it into the Sky Bet League Two Team of the Season.
He captained Forest's Under-18s in their first-ever FA Youth Cup Final in 2022 against Manchester United at Old Trafford and has also featured five times in his nation's Uefa European Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign.
The Stags start the 2025/26 season with a trip to boss Nigel Clough's former club Burton Albion on August 2.
Meanwhile, League One side Blackpool are reportedly interested in Forest and Northern Ireland striker Dale Taylor.
The 21-year-old spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Wigan Athletic in the third-tier of English football.

Michel Ange Balikwisha to Celtic is now 'possible' as next transfer on the brink with two mega exits vetoed
Pre-season is rapidly approaching an end for the Hoops and Brendan Rodgers wants more firepower Royal Antwerp boss Stef Wils admits it is "possible" that Michel-Ange Balikwisha will leave the club soon amid interest from Celtic. Talks over a move that would bring the wide man to Parkhead have been ongoing as Brendan Rodgers looks to add the winger as a successor to Nicolas Kuhn after his £17.2million move to Como. The 24-year-old has been a long-term target for the Scottish Premiership champions and reports suggest he is keen on the move. Cash-strapped Antwerp are also on the brink of a summer fire sale with wide man Balikwisha among the players that the Belgian side are keen to move, after he entered the final year of his contract. Despite this, boss WIls has consistently picked the forward in his pre-season squads - with Balikwisha scoring on Saturday in the win over Willem II. Asked by Nieuwblad if the sale of the winger was on the cards imminently, Wils said: "That's possible, yes. 'I'm just working with the guys who are here at the moment. They all have the qualities to play here, so it would be foolish not to use them." One transfer that is set to get over the line is Marco Tilio 's departure for Rapid Vienna. The Austrian side have been trailing him since his successful 18-month loan at Melbourne City - and despite regularly featuring for the Hoops in pre-season the Australia international's Celtic career looks to be coming to an end. Sky Sports Germany report that the 23-year-old will leave on loan with an obligation to buy for €1.5 million next summer. Daizen Maeda's future has been questioned amid ongoing contract talks with Brentford said to be among the clubs interested - while his fellow Japan international Reo Hatate has been touted with a switch to Udinese. But Hoops' hero Stiliyan Petrov reckons that the door should be closed on the duo departing this summer - and questioned why they would want to leave Glasgow's east end at this stage. Asked about the duo, Petrov told the Sunday Post: "When you win trophies year in and year out and do well in Europe, your players will attract attention. "That is only natural. But Celtic is a brilliant place to be and not too many footballers get the opportunity to play in front of 60,000 fans every other week. "I accept there are a few other leagues stronger than the Premiership. There is an attraction, of course. "I felt that many years ago when I wanted to try English football and signed for Aston Villa. "But I feel Celtic is a really good place to be right now. There is so much to look forward to. "Brendan is a top manager and he improves players. He loves to work on the grass on a daily basis and gets so much enjoyment out of his coaching sessions. The team is going for sessions. "The team is going for another league title and that will be five-in-a-row. So, what's not to like? "The new season will be here before we know it and the real business will be underway. "I hope the Celtic squad is settled by then and the manager knows what he has to work with."

David Gray not too downhearted despite Bolton defeat
Hibs head coach David Gray admits his players could have been 'better' during yesterday's defeat to Bolton Wanderers at Easter Road. However he was pleased to see former teammate Darren McGregor honoured at his Testimonial Match, and remained buoyant despite the off-day against English League One opposition. Two second-half strikes sealed the win for the visitors as Hibs struggled to impact the game as much as Gray and his coaching staff would have liked. After the final whistle he said: 'It wasn't our best, most fluent performance by any means. We all know that. There's a lot of improvement to come. 'We've got a lot of hard work still to be done and we've got a really good game to look forward to on Thursday. 'I'm really happy with our pre-season, but today I think we can be miles better. We know the areas we can be better in. 'We'll be back in on Monday and we'll need to make sure we are bang at it to improve.' It was a competitive encounter between the two sides, with Steven Schumacher's side offering Hibs a tough, physical test in torrential conditions. According to Gray, the difficulty of the fixture was no different to other pre-season matches so far however, but instead just a different style to play against. 'When you look at all of our games in pre-season, they have all been difficult games. 'The standard of the opposition we have took on, that is all with European games in mind because of the variety in teams you can potentially face. 'Today was more of a domestic challenge we would face week in, week out in Scotland – which is high intensity and very aggressive. 'I'm not getting too downheartened by what I have seen. A lot of good work has been done and I'm happy with the fitness levels of the players.' Gray also touched on Darren McGregor's warm reception at Easter Road, with the current Hibernian Under-19s Head Coach and former Hibs centre-back's service to the Club celebrated with a Testimonial Match. The two defenders both won the 2016 Scottish Cup together, with Gray only having great things to say about his former teammate. 'It's a special day for Darren and his family. I wish we had a better result for him but, on the whole, for what he has done for this Club, it was a fitting testimonial and I'm delighted to be part of that for him. 'As I've said, it is a special day for a special person who has given a lot to this Club. It's his childhood club, the team he grew up supporting and he has spoken very honestly about what this Club means to him. 'He deserves all the praise and accolades he's had over his time at Hibs, because he has certainly left nothing out there for them.' Like this: Like Related

Be Afraid Rangers, Be Very Afraid as arrogant English sent Celtic wake up call after £20m dig on the Hotline
Robbie Copeland takes your calls after Celtic hammered Newcastle in a pre-season friendly Celtic 4 Newcastle United 0. It might only have been a pre-season friendly but already it was a result that sent shockwaves through the Hotline. Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: " Newcastle and their fans came swaggering up here claiming to be Britain's richest club and saying they would put five past us. But this is the world's most successful football club and we sent them back home whimpering playing superb football. With big signings still to come I am confident we will make the Champions League again." Sean McGarvey, Cumbernauld, said: "I wonder how many arrogant English fans will be calling it a farmers league when Celtic completely dominated one of their Champions League representatives a master class and we aren't even full strength. Be afraid Rangers, be very afraid." Some Celtic fans weren't happy at being charged £25 for a friendly but Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: "I reluctantly attended the game despite many Celtic fans boycotting the match and I was amazed as Celtic swatted aside a Champions League side with such ease. Okay it was only a friendly but it wasn't that long ago that West Ham thrashed Celtic in a similar pre season match. "This result will be a wake up call for the English media who consider our league as a Mickey Mouse one and the only downside is Brendan Rodgers still undecided on a new contract won't have went unnoticed down south." Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, offered some caution as he said: "Well done to Celtic on some big pre season wins but it's far too early to judge. Celtic's pre season went quite well but how will they handle a two legged European tie? "Celtic's two legged tie record in Europe is probably only slightly better than the European minnows. Let's hope for Scottish football's coefficient that can change. It can't always be Rangers ruling the roost for Scotland in Europe, can it?" Switching gears a little, Liam Birney, Paisley, said: "Rangers fans are a confused bunch. On Saturday's Hotline you had two comments right next to each other. "Alec Morrison said Celtic overspent £20m on Idah and Arne Engels compared to some of their players although they both won a double. "You then had Alan Flett saying Celtic shop in the bargain basement and if they had the money Celtic had we would never get near them. Newsflash Alan: with 28 major trophies to three since 2012, you are literally nowhere near Celtic!" Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: "What a brass neck the Celtic regulars on the Hotline have for criticising Rangers for buying players from the English Championship. They bought Adam Idah from Norwich when he couldn't even break into their first team and Matt O'Riley from Milton Keynes Dons, whoever they are." And finally, Rangers are back in competitive action this week with Panathinaikos coming to town for the first leg of their Champions League qualifier. Robert Livingstone said: "With a roaring crowd behind them Rangers can win it and score goals with Martin's push up from the back line style of play. The Greeks' defence might struggle. If he wants away, Igamane can score, it would likely cement his transfer. Gers want to be taking least a two goals lead to Athens, gives them every chance."
