Ryan Moore and Trinity College had tracked Frankly Good Cen before switching out and showing a smart turn of foot, one that looked like it would seal matters. That was not counting for Leffard, however, and he too picked up in great style when asked to leave the pair battling out.

After the shortest of waits, Leffard – who holds an Arc entry – was announced the winner, putting a below-par effort in the Prix du Jockey Club – in which Trinity College had been fourth before winning at Royal Ascot – behind him and fully justifying the decision to supplement for the Paris showpiece.
Rouget told Sky Sports Racing: 'It was fantastic when I saw the horse coming. I was very confident there was not a big difference between the two (Leffard and Trinity College).
'I knew he was very good, but I had to find a new confidence in him (after the Prix du Jockey-Club). He was so well this week and the field was not tremendous I decided to supplement him. When I saw six runners, it was possible to be third and we did better.
'I think yes (he is an Arc horse), because when I bought him I was sure I bought a good horse.
It's a big fairytale, life continues and we do other things.

A number of Dons players are into the final year of their contracts in the Granite City Jimmy Thelin has confirmed that contract talks are ongoing with Shayden Morris and several others from Aberdeen 's Scottish Cup-winning squad. The fans' favourite has been the subject of several failed bids from Luton Town. The winger, 23, is out-of-contract at the end of the season and the Dons are trying to extend that deal. The likes of captain Graeme Shinnie, Dante Polvara and Ester Sokler are others who are now in the final year of their Pittodrie contracts. Thelin admitted: 'I think it's a question for Steven (Gunn, Aberdeen's director of football), but we have on-going talks with a lot of players. Let's see.' The Swede knows that when you are successful and you have good players, like Morris, then there is going to be interest. Thelin has insisted he can't worry about what he cannot impact. It is about working with what he has, while he has it and trying to improve his players, his squad, his staff and himself. Thelin acknowledged: 'I think we always have dialogue with all our players and when the time is right, the time is right. 'I don't go into specific players, but of course we have good players and other clubs have eyes on our players also. That's the reality we live in. 'But as long as you're a player, a manager, you have to always focus where you are. 'Otherwise, you stop growing and performing. 'So it's important to always stay in the moment and then what happens, after you're controlling one way, that will happen. 'But when you're a player or a manager, you have to focus where you are.' Aberdeen's model is and has been for several years based on a player trading model. They regularly sell on talent and that has been the case in recent years from Scott McKenna to the likes of Calvin Ramsay, Lewis Ferguson, Bojan Miovski, Ross McCrorie and Ylber Ramadani. This summer has been no different. Another cup hero in Pape Gueye has since been sold to Turkish side Kasimpasa earlier this month. Thelin knows others could go before the close of the window and it is about being proactive rather than being reactive. The Aberdeen manager, when asked about more out-goings, answered: 'No, I think it's difficult to speculate. I think we're taking it day by day now, week by week and the window is still one month away from closing. 'So that's why it's so difficult to see what's going to happen in the future. We have to focus on now. "We have a competitive game on Sunday and then the rest of the thing is going on in the background. The window is open, so you never know if someone comes in for a player or if you need to rebalance your squad or whatever. 'But we have to focus right now. As long as the window is open, it's on-going work. 'Even when the window is closed, the recruitment department keeps working to the next window. I think when everybody's aligned, they're aligned then things happen.'

Merchant route could encompass York or France

The colt's name was a notable omission from the entries for the Town Moor showpiece earlier this week, with his team confirming their initial thought process of remaining at a maximum of a mile and a half for the time being. Herbert explained: 'We have been talking together for some time and sometimes these things are not quite explicable, other than your own gut feeling and that of the trainer as well, and going a mile and six at this time of his career didn't appear to be in the best interest of the horse going forwards. 'Rightly or wrongly we have made that decision and we'll see how we get on when he steps up another grade next time.' The St Leger may have been shelved, but Merchant's Gordon Stakes triumph ignited dreams of a greater prize in the autumn, with the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe now firmly coming into sight. Currently without an entry for Europe's richest middle-distance prize, Merchant still has to convince all associated to stump up the €120,000 required to supplement, but a strong showing in his next outing could see the Highclere team embarking on a voyage to the French capital on October 5. 'When the entries closed for the Arc it would have been absolutely ridiculous as I think he was rated 82 at the time and it's not something you can enter willy-nilly,' added Herbert. 'But having said that, we think the Arc must not be dismissed and, as the fast-improving three-year-old he is, you never know. If it's not right he won't run, but if it is and he's won a Voltigeur or a Prix Niel, then we would absolutely consider it. 'Every race now is exciting and when I looked at him, even in that appalling weather at Goodwood, as he was going round the parade ring before the Gordon, you could see a significant change since Ascot and I think there is significant progression to come. 'He's in the most capable hands with William and his team and we will keep everything crossed. We're looking forward to the next step wherever he goes and wherever William thinks is the best option having had that very hard race at Goodwood.'

Milan sign Swiss midfielder Jashari from Club Brugge
Aug 6 (Reuters) - AC Milan have signed Switzerland midfielder Ardon Jashari from Belgium's Club Brugge on a contract until June 2030, the Serie A club said on Wednesday. Financial details were not disclosed, but Italian media reported Milan paid around 34 million euros ($39.6 million) for the 23-year-old, plus three million in bonuses. Jashari joined Brugge from Swiss side Luzern in 2024 and made 52 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals. The defensive midfielder, who has played four times for his country, helped Brugge reach the Champions League last 16 this year. Milan begin their Serie A campaign at home to promoted Cremonese on August 23. ($1 = 0.8595 euros)
