Massive search for British woman who went missing in Greece as her husband slept

Telegrapha day ago
A massive search is under way for a British woman who went missing from a beach in northern Greece.
Michele Ann Joy Bourda, 59, disappeared from her sunbed while her husband slept on Ofrynio beach near Kavala, according to reports.
The Hellenic Coastguard said the port authority received reports of a missing person on the evening of Aug 1.
Mrs Bourda's family soon raised the alarm but police have so far been unable to find her as fears for her life grow.
She had been swimming at about 12pm on Friday and was last seen wearing a two-piece swimsuit featuring rhinestones, yellow beach shoes and sunglasses with red bone frames.
'Her life is in danger'
Lifeline Hellas, a Greek missing persons charity, issued a Silver Alert on Saturday after the police were unable to locate her.
The charity's alert said: 'Her life is in danger. If you know anything, contact the Silver Alert service, 24 hours a day, at the National SOS Line 1065.'
Mrs Bourda is described as having straight blonde hair down to her shoulders, hazel eyes, 5ft 6in tall and of slim build.
The Hellenic Coastguard is reportedly conducting a search operation at sea and investigating reports that her belongings were left on the beach.
On Sunday, three recreational craft, five fishing boats and two patrol boats were involved in the search, according to Sky News.
Local media reported that Mrs Bourda lived with her husband, who is thought to be of Greek origin, in nearby Serres.
The British embassy in Greece shared a notice on Facebook which read: 'Michele Ann Bourda went missing on Aug 1 2025 at the beach of Ofrynio near Kavala.
'On the day she went missing, she was wearing a swimsuit with decorative stones, yellow water shoes and red plastic sunglasses. Her life is in danger.'
It comes after a 60-year-old British tourist went missing while on holiday in the country last month.
He was last seen in Tristomo, a village on the island of Karpathos, and his car was abandoned in 38C heat.
Michael Mosley, the television doctor, died after going missing while walking on the Greek island of Symi last summer.
The broadcaster and columnist's body was found after a four-day search in June 2024. CCTV footage appeared to show him falling over close to where his body was eventually located.
Crispin Butler, the senior coroner for Buckinghamshire, said that Mosley's death was 'most likely attributable either to heatstroke (accidental) or [a] non-identified pathological cause'.
Meanwhile, a 48-year-old British tourist was found dead after going missing on Theologos beach on the island of Rhodes.
He was reported to have been on holiday with his family and went for a swim with his niece, who left early to return to the hotel.

Neighbours fear for Glasgow mum who vanished from sun lounger in Greece five days ago

Retiree Michele Ann Joy Bourda disappeared from beach in the city of Kavala five days ago, while her husband was asleep. Fears are growing for a mum who vanished from her sun lounger in Greece while her husband was sleeping. ‌ Michele Ann Joy Bourda, who lives in Glasgow, has not been seen since she went missing from a beach in the city of Kavala at around noon on Friday. ‌ A major search was launched after 59-year-old's Greek husband Christos woke to find her gone and her possessions left behind. ‌ Now worried neighbours of the pair, who have lived in Crookston for several years after moving from England to be close to their son, have shared their shock at the news. One told the Record: 'It's just horrendous. I can't imagine what the family are going through. ‌ 'The more days that pass by the likelihood of finding her well gets less and less. 'They were just trying to enjoy their retirement.' Michele was last seen on a sun bed at Ofryni beach on August 1, where she had been lying by her husband. ‌ Mr Bourda is said to have woken up to find her missing and her belongings abandoned before raising the alarm . There had been reports that Michele had been seen swimming out at sea prior to her disappearance but no sign of her was found despite a major search operation by Greece's Hellenic Coast Guard. It is reported that three recreational craft, five fishing boats as well as two patrol boats were involved in looking for her. ‌ Greek missing persons charity Lifeline Hellas put out a Silver Alert after police were unable to locate her. It read: 'Her life is in danger. If you know anything, contact the Silver Alert service.' The mum was wearing a dark two-piece swimsuit with rhinestones, yellow beach shoes and red sunglasses when she vanished. ‌ On Tuesday, a fresh image released to the media in Greece showed her eating alongside her husband at a beach-side restaurant on the morning of her disappearance. A local shopkeeper told the Greek media that Michele's husband had visited his store looking for his wife soon after she vanished. ‌ There was no one at the couple's four-bed, detached home in Crookston on Wednesday, but neighbours shared their fears over the length of the search. John and Catherine Ross said they were thinking of Michele's husband and son. John said: 'Of course we're thinking of them. It's a horrible thing to go through. I hope their son is ok. ‌ 'It's been a long time now to be missing but we will keep hoping for the most positive outcome.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Catherine added: 'They are very quiet and keep themselves to themselves but will always put Christmas cards through. 'They moved here because their son was studying at university. ‌ 'It's shocking. Our thoughts are with them.' Another neighbour described Michele as 'quiet' and 'quite socially awkward' and said the couple had a property in Greece and would often holiday there for a couple of months in the summer. ‌ They said: 'They are very private and are very much home bods. It's always just the two of them. They are polite and friendly and Michele is the quieter of the two. 'They are very outdoorsy and active. They go out hillwalking and wild swimming. 'I feel like the longer this goes on the less likely it is that she will be found ok.' Another resident of the quiet cul-de-sac said: 'It's a shock that this has happened to a neighbour and obviously the longer it goes on the more you worry about the outcome.' The British embassy in Greece shared a notice on Facebook which said: "On the day she went missing, she was wearing a swimsuit with decorative stones, yellow water shoes and red plastic sunglasses. Her life is in danger.'

Cold-case 1986 disappearance of nurse after going on date with boyfriend she planned to dump solved in saddest way

The remains of a woman found on the Arizona-Nevada border have finally been identified as those of a Southern California nurse reported missing in 1986 after planning to break up with her boyfriend. Carol Ann Riley, from San Diego, disappeared after she had scheduled a dinner date with her boyfriend and told friends she intended to dump him, according to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office. Riley's remains were discovered at Lake Mead in May 1987 after a person rounding up steers near Bonelli Landing found a human skull on the ground. More remains were found in a shallow grave in the area, but they went unidentified until just last month, when dental records confirmed the match, authorities said. Riley's boyfriend, known as Robert Howard Smith, told police at the time of her disappearance that she had cancelled their date. Just two days later, he left town and 'dropped out of sight,' the sheriff's office said. Investigators discovered that Smith's real name was Robert Dean Weeks, who had a history of adopting aliases and was also connected to another disappearance in Nevada. Weeks' ex-wife, Patricia Weeks, had vanished from Clark County in 1968 just a few weeks after their divorce was finalized. Her body was never found. Just two days later, he 'dropped out of sight' Weeks also dated a real estate agent, Cynthia Jabour, who disappeared in 1980 after the pair had a dinner date scheduled where she also planned to end their relationship, authorities said. He had also got into an argument with a business associate, James Shaw, who disappeared in 1971. Shaw's bloodstained car was found abandoned in a Las Vegas parking lot. Shaw and Jabour were ever found. A warrant was issued for Weeks' arrest for fraud and embezzlement charges related to his business, and he was found and arrested in Arizona after he was featured on the popular TV show Unsolved Mysteries. At Weeks' trial, two of his children with ex-wife Patricia took to the stand and detailed 'how their father had beaten their mother on numerous occasions,' according to the Charley Project. In April 1988, he was convicted of murdering Patricia and Jabour, and sentenced to life in prison in Nevada. He was never charged with the murder of Riley or Shaw. He died in prison in 1996. The dental comparison between the remains and records of Riley confirmed that the body was that of the missing nurse Unsuccessful attempts to match Riley's remains to DNA or dental records occurred in 2011, 2024 and 2025, before the Mohave County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit was contacted by the Mohave Medical Examiner's Office. 'An email received indicated that a forensic odontologist and staff from the Missing and Unidentified Persons Unit, California Department of Justice, had worked on dental comparison of the Jane Doe victim and Carol Ann Riley,' the sheriff's office said in a release. The dental comparison between the remains and records of Riley confirmed that the body was that of the missing nurse.

British tourist's son defends Crete hotel staff after pool death

The family of a British woman who died in a swimming pool at a hotel in Crete have defended members of hotel staff who were arrested. Margaret Winifred Davies, 78, lost consciousness in the pool of the five-star Knossos Royal in Hersonissos, on the north coast of the island. Initial reports claimed a 21-year-old lifeguard was absent from her post at the time. She was arrested along with the hotel's director, 51, and its general manager, 41, by Greek police and questioned on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence. They were later released without charge. The British tourist's relatives said there were in fact two lifeguards on duty and both of them helped Mrs Davies. She was pulled from the water and received first aid before being taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead. The family insisted the hotel staff were in no way at fault for her death. They confirmed that staff were questioned by police but said no charges had been laid. 'Our 78-year-old mother passed away tragically while on holiday in Crete at the Knossos Royal hotel. While we would have liked to grieve in private, we feel compelled to address some of the misleading reporting that has been published in recent days,' said Paul Davies, her son. 'We are awaiting the results of the autopsy so cannot comment on the cause of death, but we would like to make clear that we do not hold the hotel responsible. Winifred got out of the pool herself and was assisted by two on-duty lifeguards. 'We would like to thank the hotel and the British consulate for their support. We ask that our privacy be respected at this painful time.' In a statement, the Knossos Royal expressed its 'sincere condolences and deepest sympathy' to the family and denied any wrongdoing. 'From the very first moment we were informed about the guest's discomfort, the hotel management responded to the incident with complete responsibility, seriousness, and professionalism, providing immediate assistance, support, and every possible medical aid to her. This response was recognised and appreciated by the family.' Under investigation Hotel managers said the matter was under investigation and the cause of death would be clarified when a forensic report was released. 'According to current medical assessments, the guest's death is attributed to pathological causes, with no indication of external negligence,' their statement said. The hotel occupies a prime position on the northern coast of Crete. Its website says the venue boasts several swimming pools, which are 'designed to appeal to all senses and play an important role in the resort's architectural structure'.
