Guess who! Hollywood star featured in 1990s ad before she was famous - as the quirky commercial goes viral

Daily Mail18-06-2025
Before red carpets, Oscar nominations and critically acclaimed roles, one of Australia's biggest Hollywood stars was just another young actor trying to make a buck.
And one newly unearthed ad from the early 1990s proves exactly that.
The now-famous performer was barely recognisable in this quirky commercial for Continental's 'MicroChef Pasta for One' range, which first aired in 1992.
Wearing a hot pink blazer over a red turtleneck, the fresh-faced actress appears bored senseless in a geography classroom surrounded by globes and maps, before reluctantly presenting a sad-looking sandwich to the camera.
In the next shot, she perks up while holding up the microwave-ready pasta packet with delight, as a narrator sings the praises of the new solo-friendly snack.
From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop.
The brief ad served up a healthy dose of '90s nostalgia with its punchy colours, cheesy music and classic Australian humour.
But it's the then-unknown actress who steals the show with her expressive performance.
The star would go on to have a stellar career in film and television, earning international acclaim for her standout roles in both indie hits and Hollywood blockbusters.
These days, she's better known for walking red carpets than holding up frozen pasta - but this delightful throwback proves even A-listers have to start somewhere.
Can you guess who it is? It's none other than Toni Collette.
Fans were stunned by the throwback, which recently resurfaced online, with many taking to social media to share their surprise over the actress' early work.
'She's such a good actress she could almost anything hehe,' one fan wrote.
'I remember the ad – but didn't realise who it was,' another user commented.
A third added: 'That's good acting because it looks disgusting!'
The ad has since become a viral sensation, with many praising Collette's natural screen presence even in a 30-second commercial.
It's not the first time Collette's early career has resurfaced in unexpected ways.
She famously got her big break in 1994's Muriel's Wedding, which recently made it's way back into cinemas for the Sydney Film Festival earlier this month.
A genuine A-lister, Collette made her name starring in The Sixth Sense, which won her an Oscar nomination.
She has also had starring turns in About a Boy and Little Miss Sunshine, to Knives Out.
Collette's latest role is in Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon Ho, whose black-comedy thriller Parasite swept the 2020 Oscars.
In March, she was in London to start filming a top-secret project.

I'm A Celebrity bosses 'are lining up Emmerdale star Lisa Riley as the first star to enter the famous jungle for the new series'

Emmerdale star Lisa Riley is reportedly being lined up as the first star to take part in this year's I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! The actress, 49, has played Mandy Dingle on the legendary soap for 30 years, making a bombshell return to the village six years ago. Now, sources are claiming that Lisa is in advanced talks with bosses to move into the Australia jungle when the show returns in November. The soap star has made it no secret that she is a fan of the show, meaning she could follow in the footsteps of many Dales favourites such as Danny Miller, Gemma Atkinson and Adam Thomas by taking part in the show. A source told The Sun: 'Lisa is the perfect celebrity for the show because not only is she from a soap watched by millions she's one of its biggest characters and it's an ITV show to boot. 'She also has a naughty, mischievous sense of humour which is guaranteed to get a big response from her other celebrity campmates during their time in the jungle. 'Lisa is by no means the first star from Emmerdale to have gone on I'm a Celebrity and those that do always tend to get a great response from viewers at home.' Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Lisa Riley and I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! for comment.. Lisa, who turns 50 next year, previously shared her hopes of taking part in the show, saying: 'I'm A Celebrity... is something I would do before I turned 50 as a test for myself.' Last year's series saw McFly's Danny Jones crowned series champion, beating a star-studded lineup that included Coleen Rooney, Maura Higgins, GK Barry and Reverend Richard Coles. However, the married singer has since courted controversy, as in March he was filmed sharing a drunken kiss with his campmate Maura. Lisa first joined the cast of Emmerdale as Mandy Dingle in 1995, but left the soap six years later. She went onto land a string of other roles including Fat Friends and Waterloo Road, and in 2013 she competed on Strictly Come Dancing. 18 years after her soap exit, Lisa returned to Emmerdale, admitting that after being asked about reprising her role for years by fans, she finally realised she never had a reason not to return. She said: 'I'm the type of person that must have an answer, I can't leave anything open ended. 'I was working for Strictly in doing a Q and A and there were 4,000 people asking me when I was going back to Emmerdale. But I've had that since the day I left.' Earlier this month, it was reported that ITV were planning to keep I'm A Celebrity on screens for the next five years, bringing the show up to a landmark 30th series. Sources claimed ITV have opened talks with Australian bosses to secure the area of jungle where they film until 2030.

Celeste Barber breaks silence on shock 'Photoshop' scandal after appearing on glossy magazine cover: 'It's gonna piss some of you off'

Celeste Barber has responded to critics after she was widely slammed for her appearance on the cover of the upcoming September issue of Marie Claire. The comedian, 43, who is best known for poking fun at over-produced photos and videos often posted by beautiful models, has been accused of becoming 'what she mocked' by posing for the 'heavily photoshopped' cover shoot on her feed. However on Thursday, Celeste defiantly returned to Instagram to push back at her naysayers - insisting that her image wasn't photoshopped. 'Hi, I need to tell you all something about this photo shoot, and it's going to piss some of you off. It's not photoshopped! I just look that f**king good! I know!' Celeste said. 'You guys are so used to me showing you what I look like as a slapped arse. This is me as well! Guys, I just look this good,' she continued. Celeste went on to praise the creative team for transforming her into a covergirl. 'It's hard - I just look this good when there's 15 kilos of hair put on my head and then Koh [hairstylist] has to snatch my face up to give me a bit of a Kris Jenner lift to hold the wig in place,' she said. She went on to praise her makeup artist who painted her face 'like an absolute wizard,' adding: 'I have a feeling, I think they actually shipped lighting in for this, because sister needs a bit of help.' Celeste then credited her photographer for his 'amazing angles with the camera', before reiterating: 'This is just how I look. I'm so sorry, but I look f**king great.' The cover, which she shared to Instagram on Wednesday, saw Celeste attempting to stay true to her roots as she parodied singer Jennifer Lopez 's infamous 2000 Grammys green dress. However, some followers were left outraged to see how much Photoshop was used to give Celeste a flawless, almost unrecognisable visage in the image. 'How can you allow so much Photoshop when all you sell is authenticity?' one person wrote to the comedian. 'So photoshopped. What's a shame,' another added, as a third penned: 'Ah the irony.' 'Did they not know you were beautiful before? Isn't the whole point of the entire bit that you laugh in the face of the celebrity airbrush culture?' said someone else. 'And she became what she mocked,' one user commented. Others decided to turn the blame on Marie Claire. 'The amount of editing your photography team has done to Celeste goes against everything she stands for,' one outraged follower said. 'Heavily photoshopped Celeste Barber is sacrilege,' another agreed. Someone else stood up for Celeste, saying the media personality had every right to pose for a glamour shoot because she was 'making an impact' on the world. 'To connect with the regular normal day to day person is her shtick,' they added. 'If you don't understand that and solely judge from this picture then you don't know anything about her nor Marie Claire nor what it is to be a woman standing for other women!' Celeste is known for mocking models and celebrities for their over-the-top glamour shots and saucy videos flaunting their trim figures. Celeste was accused of becoming 'what she mocked' after she posed for the glamour shoot and shared it to Instagram In April, she left locals appalled with her latest stunt in Paris when she strolled the streets of the French capital in nothing but her undies. In footage shared to Instagram, she pranced around in her skimpy smalls sipping a coffee, mocking similar footage filmed by a young model in Italy. However, onlookers appeared less thrilled at her brazen display, with some pointing in disgust at her wild sideshow. The social media star captioned the footage with some amusing words. 'It's important to blend in when travelling,' she wrote.
