40-Year-Old ASHA Worker's Body Found In UP, Rape Suspected: Cops
A 40-year-old ASHA worker was found dead in a maize field in Alapur area here, with police suspecting sexual assault.
The body of the ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) worker was found on Monday night in a semi-naked condition. Officials said the exact cause of the death would be confirmed after autopsy.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Brijesh Singh said the deceased, identified as Rajkumari, wife of Raghvendra Jatav and resident of Hayatnagar village had gone to Kundan Nagla village for a vaccination drive on Monday.
She was last seen in the evening returning on a scooty with a known ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) to her village, after which she went missing, he said.
Police received information about the body through the UP 112 emergency service. The body was found in a maize field in Kharkholi village under Alapur police station limits, he said.
A forensic team was called to the scene, and the body was sent for autopsy after completing necessary legal formalities, he said.
SSP Singh added that Rajkumari had two sons and a daughter from her marriage with Raghvendra, whom she married in 2003 after the death of his first wife. Raghvendra also has a son from his first marriage. The deceased was involved in an ongoing land dispute in a civil court in Budaun against two men from the same village.
The SSP said he has formed four teams, "including SOG and surveillance units, to investigate the case.
Based on suspicion raised by the family, two individuals have been detained for questioning.
Further legal proceedings are underway.

Transgender attacked with blade, beer bottles in Karnataka's Tumakuru district
The Kora Police on Saturday registered a case of attempt to murder against six transgender persons for allegedly attacking one member from their own community for leaving their 'gharana' or group at Sorekunte gate in Tumakuru district on Friday. The victim, identified as Anushri, was returning home to her daughter on Friday night, when the accused, riding in two autorickshaws, allegedly intercepted and attacked her with a blade and beer bottles. Anushri somehow managed to escape and took shelter at a nearby mosque. With the help of passersby, she reached the district hospital in an ambulance and got herself admitted there. On grounds of this being a medico-legal issue, the police registered a case against Asha, the prime accused, along with five others. In her complaint, Anushri alleged that the accused attacked her over a row involving chit fund and gold. However, she said that the primary motive behind the attack was the fact that she had came out of the 'gharana' managed by Asha in order to join another group. The Asha-led group, according to the complainant, carried out illegal activities, and members had to share their earnings with the gang leader as protection money. Any violation of these rules were strictly dealt with in terms of severe punishment and torture, a city-based NGO helping Anushri, told The Hindu. Unable to bear the torture, Anushri chose to walk out of the group and even threatened Asha that she will approach the police and expose the latter's illegal activities, the complaint said. Many persons from the transgender community gathered in front of the Kora Police station and staged a protest condemning the attack and demanding strict action against the accused.

‘Transformation of UP Police rooted in tech, compassion'
1 2 Summing up the transformation of the police in Uttar Pradesh, former director general of police OP Singh said that with a change in mindset, technology became the cornerstone of policing. Speaking at a session during TOI Dialogues, Singh recalled the situation and said that when he took charge in 2017-18, Uttar Pradesh was grappling with high crime rate, organised crime and elements of criminality. "It's erroneous to think we only went for encounters. We brought in a mindset change. Technology became the cornerstone of policing," he said. From drones, CCTVs and UP112 emergency response system — ranked third globally in Dubai in 2019 — to artificial intelligence-enabled tools, predictive policing, and citizen-centric platforms like UPCOP offering 29 contactless services, Singh spoke about a slew of measures aimed at enhancing investigative capabilities. Partnerships with IIT-Kanpur, IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Indore and ISRO helped build in-house technical expertise, he said. Singh also cited major budget boosts, with the state police budget jumping from Rs 18,000 crore to Rs 24,500 crore in 2019-20, enabling massive training drives and infrastructure expansion. "Modernisation comes only through technology — in weapons, forensic science, cybercrime units and ATS operations. Equally important is compassion in policing," he said, recalling how humane, unarmed policing ensured the smooth conduct of Kumbh Mela. Addressing concerns that technology could erode human contact, Singh emphasised balancing "hardware" — weapons, rules, enforcement — with "software" — empathy, openness and public trust. "A good leader must combine both at the ground level," he said, noting that daily call volume has risen from 18,000 in 2019 to 30,000 in 2023, aided by data analytics for predictive policing. Arya, who has lived in Noida since 1999, said policing in the city has improved "dramatically" — both in response time and citizen interaction. "The biggest change is that criminals are now afraid of the police, not citizens," he said, adding that while challenges remain, high-handedness has reduced and citizens' complaints are increasingly being heard. Looking ahead, Singh said the force must aim for "inclusive policing" with equitable access to justice, especially for women and the poor. "Smartness is not just a uniform — it's in ideas, mindset and action," he said, aligning with the PM's vision of a competent, sensitive, accountable and transparent police. Retired Major Gaurav Arya called for increased budgets to match the scale of UP's challenges, comparing its population to that of the fifth-largest country in the world. UP horror: Nephew held for murder of woman after failed rape bid; shot in leg while fleeing
AGRA: A 25-year-old man was arrested early on Thursday for the murder of his 50-year-old maternal aunt, a government auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM), in a village in Muzaffarnagar. According to police, the accused was trying to escape when he was intercepted and shot in the leg during an encounter. Officials said the labourer entered the woman's house late on Wednesday night and attempted to rape her. When she resisted, he attacked her with a sharp object and then strangled her with a pillow. The woman, who was alone at home at the time, died on the spot. SSP Sanjay Kumar Verma said, 'Based on CCTV footage, the accused—identified as a resident of the same village—was arrested during an encounter. As the police chased him, he fired at them, and in retaliatory fire, he was injured in the leg.'
