Mattel Creating Celebrity Friends For Ken, Starting With LeBron James

Forbes09-04-2025

LeBron James has won NBA championships, Olympic Gold Medals, and been named one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine. Now he has been chosen for a new, first-of-a-kind, honor - Kenbassador.
Mattel is announcing today that James is the first celebrity doll to be released in a new series of collectibles intended to celebrate the 65th birthday of the Ken doll.
The toy manufacturer is planning to produce a number of Kenbassadors - likenesses of male celebrities who, as Mattel describes it 'are inspiring and contributing to a better world for all.'
The Ken doll first was released in 1961, making Ken two years younger than his on-and-off-and-on girlfriend Barbie. While Mattel has always made a big deal out of Barbie's birthdays, Ken's didn't get as much attention. But the Barbie movie phenomenon greatly boosted Ken's popularity, his fashion credentials, and his status as a collectible.
'As we gear up for a year of Ken's 65th there will be a lot of different ways to celebrate Ken and the Barbie brand as a whole,' Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls at Mattel, said in an interview.
Mattel isn't saying who the other Kenbassadors will be, or when their dolls will be released, but Berger said the Kenbassador releases could extend beyond Ken's birthday year if they prove to be popular.
'Barbie is a brand that is always listening to its fans, so certainly, if they embrace it they way we think they will, this is something that could go on for awhile,' she said.
The LeBron doll will sell for $75 and be available in Target stores, and online at Target, Amazon, Walmart, and Mattel Creations starting April 14, following a limited advance drop of the dolls, including some signed by James, on April 12 at the Undefeated sneaker and sportswear store in Los Angeles.
According to Mattel, James was closely involved in personalizing the doll's outfit and accessories. The doll is dressed in a custom varsity jacket, a LeBron James Family Foundation We are Family t-shirt, and Nike Terminator High sneakers, with accessories including Beats headphones, sunglasses, a fanny pack, a gold watch, and James' 'I Promise' wristband. The patches on the varsity jacket represent James' jersey number, his foundation, and his Akron, Ohio hometown.
The LeBron doll has another standout feature - it is one inch taller than the standard Ken doll model, requiring custom, larger packaging.
Berger said she expects the doll to be a hit with both LeBron fans and Barbie collectors.
'There are aspects to of this doll that collectors who might not be as familiar with LeBron are going to want and love, because the detail is there,' Berger said. 'But I think LeBron fans are absolutely going to love it because it really does pay homage to who he is and his outsize contributions to culture and style and community while bringing a lot of his personality to life in the doll,' she said.
James, in a statement released by Mattel, said he signed on to be a Kenbassador because he believes it is important for children to have positive role models.
'As a young kid, I was fortunate to have role models who not only inspired me but also showed me what's possible through hard work and dedication,' James said. 'Now, as an adult, I understand how vital it is for young people to have positive figures to look up to.'
'That's why partnering with Barbie to release the LeBron James Kenbassadors doll is such an honor,' James said. 'It's an opportunity to recognize the powerful impact of role models who instill confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids that they, too, can achieve greatness.'
For future Kenbassadors, Mattel is looking for role models are aren't just superstars in their fields, but who, like LeBron, are someone who 'has had an impact on community, on culture, is a style icon - those are all things that make you a natural fit with the Barbie and Ken brands,' Berger said. 'What we're really looking for are those people who are contributing to really making a better world for all - that idea of inspiring limitless possibilities.'
Convincing someone - even superstars like LeBron James - to become a Kenbassador isn't a hard sell, Berger said.
'I think a call from the Barbie brand is always an honor, if I do say so myself, particularly coming off the heels of the Barbie movie, which really did recontextualize the brand for a whole new generation of fans,' she said. 'As the number one doll brand in the world, as the most diverse doll line in the world, and with Barbie as a role model, being called from Barbie and being invited to play in her world is something that people see as an honor.'

ABOUT BARBIE™ Barbie was founded in 1959 by Ruth Handler, a mother and visionary entrepreneur, whose inspiration for Barbie came from watching her daughter project her dreams and aspirations onto paper dolls. Recognizing a gap in the market, which only offered baby dolls for girls to imagine themselves as caregivers, Ruth invented the fashion doll category with a three-dimensional doll that girls could use to imagine their future selves. Ruth's philosophy behind Barbie was that through the doll a little girl could be anything she wanted to be and that she has choices. Over the brand's 60 years, Barbie has empowered girls to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. Shaq Announces He's Not Watching Rest of NBA Finals

The Oklahoma City Thunder played a complete game from start to finish on Sunday evening, tying the NBA Finals at one game apiece with the Indiana Pacers. The Thunder were able to defend their home court with a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, getting their first win of the series after their thrilling and dramatic Game 1 loss. Advertisement The Finals have delivered on the hype so far, with stars like Tyrese Haliburton and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander putting up big numbers and making iconic moments. Basketball fans are eagerly awaiting the next game in the series, but one former NBA champion says he won't be watching. After the Thunder tied the series on Sunday night, Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith joined NBA TV for post game coverage. O'Neal took the opportunity to express his gratitude that he could leave after Game 2, as Charles Barkley would join post game coverage for the next two games in Indiana. 'Indiana stole one. I'm just glad it's not the old format, that 2-3-2. Remember that format? That 2-3-2? So now we have a series. I won't even be watching,' O'Neal admitted. Advertisement The old Finals format would have resulted in three straight games in Indiana, which could have had adverse effects on Oklahoma City - the higher seed - playing three straight games on the road. 'I'm gonna be in the Bahamas," O'Neal said. His fellow panelists reminded him that he could still watch the game from his vacation, but he doubled down. 'Not in the ocean,' O'Neal said, affirming his stance. Some fans were able to enjoy O'Neal's candor as a funny moment, but some have expressed concern and outrage about how he's covered the league this season. Earlier this year, O'Neal admitted to not watching the Detroit Pistons despite the fact that they were a playoff team and had been one of the most compelling stories in basketball. Advertisement O'Neal, Barkley, Smith and Ernie Johnson will be heading to ESPN next year for a revival of "Inside the NBA." The show has come under fire for the lack of actual basketball analysis from some, but O'Neal's comments seem to indicate that more of the same could be on the way, even at a new network. LeBron James: 2020 NBA Playoffs were the 'purest form of hoops'

LeBron James: 2020 NBA Playoffs were the 'purest form of hoops' The Los Angeles Lakers' 2020 NBA championship has been derided by many people as not a legitimate championship because of the fact that it was won inside of the Walt Disney World Resort bubble during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to critics and cynics, since there were no fans and no travel, it cannot count as a legitimate championship. However, that postseason was a big challenge in other ways, mainly because of the stringent safety restrictions that were imposed on everyone who participated. It amounted to up to three months of full and total focus on playoff basketball. LeBron James, who won his fourth ring that year, expanded on the type of focus that was required during that time during a recent episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast. "I agree with what a lot of people say that it's the purest form of hoops," James said. "It was strictly basketball. We all have the ability to do whatever we want in life. We've made a bunch of money, we have all the access. That's gone in the bubble. You can't just say, 'oh, I'm about to go to a restaurant or I'm about to do this.' You can't do none of that. Everything in the bubble was strictly about basketball. And obviously we were there talking about a lot of off-the-court things that were going on, the social injustice and police brutality and all that stuff, rightfully so. But when the basketball portion was the focus, that's all it was. Of all my championships I've won, that level of focus, how long can you maintain your focus in order to get the job done? Because you have all the reasons if you want to get out of focus because you're so accustomed to a certain lifestyle that you're like, 'to hell with this, I don't wanna do this, why am I here? I don't want to be a part of this, I can't get a certain meal, I can't do this, I can't see my family, I can't lock in…' And you can very easily get out of why you're there." The 2019-20 season was initially suspended in March once the pandemic started to hit critical mass. When the bubble was announced, many were skeptical that it would work and that the coronavirus would be prevented from spreading inside of it. But thanks to those stringent restrictions, which included restrictions on family members getting it, it was a huge success. In particular, it was a huge success for the Lakers, who continued to prove they were the best team in basketball that year by bringing home the world championship.
