Buyout firms circle corporate intelligence firm G3

Sky News08-06-2025
A corporate intelligence firm which employs Sir John Sawers, the former head of MI6, is closing in on a deal to sell a big stake to a buyout firm.
Sky News has learnt that G3, which was founded in 2004 and advises clients on a range of risks affecting their businesses, has been in detailed talks in recent weeks with private equity suitors including Oakley Capital and KKR.
Precise details of a transaction were unclear on Sunday, although one source suggested that a deal was likely in the coming days, and could value the business at between £200m and £250m.
They said that Oakley Capital - founded by the entrepreneur Peter Dubens - had emerged as the most likely investor, although a deal had yet to be agreed.
Bridgepoint, another London-based private equity firm, had also expressed an interest in G3, the source added.
G3 already has some external investment, having struck a deal with All Seas Capital in 2022, according to the latter's website.
The firm - which files accounts under the name G3 Good Governance Group - advises companies, private equity firms, sovereign wealth funds and pension funds on areas of commercial risk such as cybersecurity, reported a 27% rise in revenue in 2023.
During that year, the latest for which accounts are available, it recorded earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of nearly £9m.
Sir John, who stepped down as the head of MI6 in 2014, was named chairman of G3's advisory board last year.

Activist investor wants review at Gerresheimer after taking stake

MUNICH, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Active Ownership, a major shareholder in Gerresheimer ( opens new tab, said on Thursday it saw major potential for value creation at the German packaging and medical equipment specialist and called for a strategic review, a second activist investor to do so. "Active Ownership expressly welcomes the planned sale process for the moulded glass division and calls for a swift settlement in order to strengthen Gerresheimer's cash flow and reduce debt," Active Ownership said in a statement to Reuters. Gerresheimer, which had been undertaking a "strategic review" of the unit since 2024, announced plans to sell the moulded glass business earlier in August. It has been engaged in "constructive dialogue" with Active Ownership, as well as its other investors, for several months now, a company spokesperson told Reuters. Active Ownership said that further key measures should include additional portfolio optimization and the implementation of an efficiency programme, particularly through cost reductions in administration and business units. That would improve the return on Gerresheimer's sales by five percentage points, the activist investor said, while also calling for the creation of a strategy committee to review all of the company's ongoing projects. Gerresheimer's shares were up 2.6% as of 0904 GMT, after a regulatory release on Wednesday evening showed Active Ownership's stake at 5.31%, plus access to a further 1.88% via put and call options. This makes Active Ownership its second largest shareholder behind the asset management division of U.S. bank Goldman Sachs, which owns 8.9% according to a regulatory filing on Thursday. London-based investment fund Asset Value Investors, which holds a 3.5% stake in Gerresheimer, in June pressed the medical packaging maker to find ways to restore its market value. Including Thursday's gains, Gerresheimer's shares have fallen 36% so far this year.

More than half of bank innovation leaders say they're sick of 'cloudwashing'

New data from data-driven core banking engine provider, SaaScada, shows that while UK banks increasingly adopt cloud technology to modernise outdated core banking systems, many are realising that not all clouds are created equal. 0 Many banks are being deceived by 'cloudwashing' - a marketing tactic where companies falsely claim that core banking products are 'cloud-native' when in reality, they are legacy technologies that have been moved to the cloud. The survey of 150 UK banking innovation leaders reveals 95% UK banks have migrated - or plan to migrate - core banking workloads to the cloud. The top three drivers for these migrations are scalability and reliability, greater product development control, and cost reduction. However, many UK banks are missing out on the very benefits they're seeking - with 57% of banking leaders now 'sick of cloudwashing', saying most so-called 'cloud' core banking services are just old tech with a new label. When asked, 'Have you ever been a victim of cloudwashing?', the survey found: 39% of banks admit they have fallen victim to cloudwashing, buying 'cloud' banking systems with no cloud capabilities. Meanwhile, 23% say it's difficult to determine if the core banking product was genuinely cloud-native. This leaves only 38% who are happy, saying the 'cloud' offering aligned with the cloud capabilities as advertised. 'Adopting just any 'cloud' core banking system won't instantly solve your core banking headaches, especially if that core isn't truly cloud native,' said Nelson Wootton, CEO and Co-Founder, SaaScada. 'With cloudwashing obscuring the picture, banking heads must ensure they do their research and don't fall for the marketing! It's vital to understand what makes a core system cloud-native: born in the cloud, providing access to real-time data and architectural flexibility to drive innovation.' SaaScada advises that there are five signs of a truly cloud-native core banking system that companies should bear in mind when investing in cloud native core banking solutions: Low setup costs Greater flexibility to design and launch products at the pace of customer demand No mandatory downtime for service upgrades Access to real-time customer data Unlimited scalability.
