Laureus World Sports Awards 2025 Winners List: Duplantis, Nadal bag top honours; Rishabh Pant misses out

Indian Express22-04-2025

Record-breaking pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis and America's legendary gymnast Simone Biles bagged the top honous at the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony in Madrid on Monday. While Duplantis earned the World Sportsman of the Year at the prestigious award gala, Biles was bagged the highest women's honours of the night.
The 25-year-old Duplantis, regarded as the greatest pole vaulter of all time, won the award for the first time after being nominated in each of the past three years. Duplantis became only the second track-and-field athlete after four-time winner Usain Bolt to claim the prestigious award. Duplantis pipped the likes of Spain's Carlos Alcaraz (Tennis), France's Léon Marchand (Swimming), Slovenia's Tadej Pogačar (Cycling) and Netherlands' Max Verstappen (Motor Racing) with more votes for the award. 'I am incredibly honoured to have won my first Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award in the sporting capital of Madrid and to have the great Usain Bolt pay tribute to me…' he said.
Duplantis won his second World Indoor Championship gold medal in March and broke his own world record for a remarkable ninth time in 2024 en route to Olympic gold in Paris.
Biles, who returned to action after a break, clinched three gold and one silver medal in a stunning comeback at the Paris Olympics to claim her fourth Laureus award — equalling the record held by Serena Williams. Both the athletes also have one Comeback of the Year honour.
Tennis great Rafael Nadal was conferred the Laureus Sporting Icon Award in a year he announced his retirement from professional tennis.
'Back in 2006 I won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award in Barcelona… Tennis and sports in general has given me so much…,' Nadal said.
Rishabh Pant, who was the only Indian to be nominated for the awards for his comeback from a 14-month layoff due to his road accident, missed out on the award eventually clinched by Rebeca Andrade. Andrade got the Comeback of the Year award for her inspirational return from a series of career-threatening injuries. Andrade, who contemplated quitting after three ACL injuries, made a triumphant return by winning gold in the floor exercise at the Paris Games.

Are Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz cut from the same cloth?

Carlos Alcaraz and Rafa Nadal (Photo byfor Laureus) Unlike his idol, Alcaraz at 22 has won Majors on grass, hard and clay. Nadal's first 4 Slam wins came in Paris There was talk from Day 1, but Sunday night was the perfect catalyst for the tennis world to go into a tizzy. At 22, Rafael Nadal had won five Grand Slam titles and when Carlos Alcaraz did the same by outlasting Jannik Sinner at Rafa's 'home' Roland Garros, the comparison calls became louder. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "It is a stat that I am going to keep for me forever, winning the fifth Grand Slam at the same time as Rafa – my idol, my inspiration. It's a huge honour," Alcaraz said after the five-and-a-half-hour epic. Both are Spaniards, both share a never-say-die attitude, both are die-hard Real Madrid fans. The surface similarities between the two are many. So much so that the Rafa loyalist over a decade and a half feels Alcaraz is a natural heir to his throne of the heart. Poll Which player's style do you prefer? Nadal's relentless defense Alcaraz's aggressive play I enjoy both styles equally Neither, I prefer a different style But is it that simple? Are Nadal and Alcaraz cut out of the same cloth? The answer is probably 'no'. Nadal came at a time when the world was in awe of the jaw-dropping beauty of Roger Federer . The victories were becoming routine when this Spanish matador rocked the citadel of tennis with incredible ability to endure. Federer, who had grown up on Swiss clay and believed till 2005 that it was a matter of time before he won the French, suddenly didn't know how to get past his young nemesis on the red clay of Paris. Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo It was a riddle that Federer never solved — he beat Rafa on other surfaces, but never at Roland Garros. Who's that IPL player? Nadal won 14 French Open titles — a record that is unlikely to be broken — and it had a lot to do with the different facets of his game that he went on adding to his basic repertoire of being an unbelievable retriever. But to start off, the myth of Rafa began as a counterpoint to the elegance of Federer. That's a fundamental difference between Alcaraz and Nadal. The Murica boy appeared on the big stage almost as a saviour in early 2022 when Federer was all but gone, Nadal was in a decline and Novak Djokovic was the untouchable master. Tennis was getting slightly unidimensional, and it needed the gold dust of artistry to keep it enticing for the consumer pampered by the Swiss-Spanish royalty for close to two decades. "The basic difference between Nadal and Alcaraz is that the latter is as good on any surface as he is on clay. His first Slam came on the hard courts of the US Open. He conquered grass when nobody expected him to do so, and now he is a two-time French Open champion. On the other hand, Rafa's first four Grand Slam titles were all at Roland Garros, till the 2008 Wimbledon final happened," Indian legend Ramesh Krishnan told TOI. Bombay Sport Exchange Ep. 6: Harish Thawani on cricket's TV market and the watershed moments While Nadal became an extremely reliable volleyer and kept on adding new shots and facets to his game, the 22-Slam winner's core strength was his ability to defend on slightly slower surfaces. Alcaraz, on the other hand, even as a teenager, was a combination of attack and defence – his ability to play outrageous winners has been the cornerstone of some of his best moments so far. Be it his drop shot down 0-30 serving for the match against Novak Djokovic in 2023 Wimbledon final or his ability to pull winners out of his bag in the final set tiebreak on Sunday, Alcaraz was more Federer than Nadal for the tennis tragic. The biggest compliment for Alcaraz probably came from the other master Djokovic, who feels that he hasn't "played a player like him" after the 2023 Wimbledon final loss. "Roger and Rafa had their own strengths and weaknesses, but Carlos is an amazing player. I would say his game has the best of all three of us." That probably sums up Alcaraz's game. And when John McEnroe said on Sunday that "these guys (Alcaraz and Sinner) would beat Roger and Rafa in their prime", you're left with the dilemma: "Who would you pay to watch? Nadal or Alcaraz? Krishnan smiled at the query. "I will probably pay to watch both."

Drake Maye reveals why Stefon Diggs is already winning hearts as an ‘awesome' Patriots teammate

Drake Maye can't stop raving about Stefon Diggs' impact as a teammate in New England (Getty Images) The New England Patriots are entering a new chapter, and one of the biggest moves of their transformative offseason was the acquisition of veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs. After suffering a torn ACL midway through the 2024 season, Diggs is gradually working his way back onto the field, but his presence is already being felt in Foxborough — both on and off the turf. Why Drake Maye thinks Stefon Diggs is already proving to be an 'awesome' fit for Patriots Though still in recovery mode, Diggs has been involved in recent on-field work and attending meetings with the team. His locker sits right beside rookie quarterback Drake Maye, and the two are quickly building a connection that could define the Patriots' offense in the coming years. 'Yeah, he seems like an awesome teammate,' Maye said after the first day of mandatory minicamp. 'He's my locker mate, one down from beside me. We talk all the time. He's a veteran in this league. He's made a lot of plays, played in a lot of big-time games. Just an awesome voice for the receiver room, for this offense. He's played in some playoff games. He's had some big games.' The 30-year-old Diggs is entering his 11th season in the NFL, bringing with him a résumé that includes six straight 1,000-yard seasons (2018–2023) before the injury, along with four consecutive 100-catch campaigns. He may not be back to full speed yet, but his mentorship and football IQ are already proving invaluable for Maye and the team's younger players. Maye, now preparing for his second year in the NFL, emphasized just how impactful Diggs' leadership has been so far. 'In the meetings, [he's] asking questions, asking me after plays, 'Hey, what should I have done there? Hey, in the past, I've done this when the guy's playing this leverage,' stuff like that,' Maye shared. 'He's seen a lot of different things, played a long time in this league. It's been great for me.' The Patriots' offense struggled mightily last season, finishing last in passing yards and second-to-last in touchdown passes. The front office responded with significant changes, hiring Mike Vrabel as head coach and making key roster additions like Diggs, Mack Hollins, and Kendrick Bourne to support Maye's growth. Diggs' presence gives Maye a proven target — someone who not only can deliver on the field but also elevate the culture inside the locker room. 'Once he recovers, and he's getting back out there, I'm looking forward to being able to throw him some footballs. It's always good having a guy like that on your team,' Maye added. Diggs signed a three-year, $69 million deal to join the Patriots, and his veteran influence could be the spark that turns around a struggling offense. While videos of him enjoying offseason activities on a boat made social media waves, his focus now seems locked in on football and forming a bond with his young quarterback. If health permits and the chemistry continues to develop, the Diggs-Maye duo could quickly become the heartbeat of a retooled Patriots attack aiming to reestablish itself in the AFC. Sharing the big moment on Instagram, Anais flaunted her dazzling diamond ring with the caption, 'Mrs. Watson Loading…' Love has clearly stood the test of time for these two. Here's everything you need to know about his fiancée Jilly Anais. Who Is Deshaun Watson 's fiancee, Jilly Anais? While Deshaun Watson continued to recover from an ACL injury and faced questions about his future with the Cleveland Browns, one thing seems to be more certain than ever—his relationship with longtime girlfriend Jilly Anais. The quarterback, whose career has seen both dazzling highs and controversial lows, just made a major personal move: he proposed to Anais, his partner of more than five years. Their story began in 2019 when Watson, then playing for the Houston Texans, met Anais in Los Angeles. According to TMZ, their romance started with a bold DM move from Watson, leading to a unique first date—a 7:00 am yoga session followed by dinner. Since then, the two have stayed strong, even through Watson's legal troubles and the public spotlight that often cast doubt on their relationship. Despite swirling breakup rumors during his legal battles, Watson laid all speculation to rest when he threw Anais a lavish 29th birthday bash in their Miami apartment. For those unfamiliar with Jilly Anais, she's more than just a supportive partner. Born on January 2, 1996, in Houston, Texas, Anais was once a competitive cheerleader and even earned the title of Miss Teen Houston in 2011. She moved to Los Angeles at 18 to chase her dreams—and clearly, she's been doing just that. Now a pop singer, social media influencer, and model, Anais boasts over 2 million followers on Instagram. Her modeling résumé includes collaborations with big names like Sakowitz Furs and Dance Spirits, and she's been represented by agencies such as IMG Models and Otto Models. But her ventures don't stop there. Anais is also a budding entrepreneur with her own perfume line, Boss Babe by Jilly Anais, and has stepped into the culinary world with her cookbook, This Boss Babe Can Cookbook. Now affectionately referred to as the future Mrs. Watson, Anais continues to be a steady presence in Watson's life. As fans await news about his NFL return, one thing's for sure—he's already scored a major win off the field.
