Warren G. Harding girls flag football team finishes first season
Warren G Harding has a rich athletic history but this spring, these ladies wrote a new chapter, one flag at a time.
'I've been a football fan for a minute. My brothers were athletes,' said Jaleah Provitt.
Jaleah Provitt is a junior at Harding and the quarterback of the girls' flag football team, made up of more than 20 ladies. The team is just wrapping up its first season, finishing with a 6-2 record.
'It's a big deal to me because my siblings get to see their little sister doing something they did,' Provitt said.
The Raiders' success earned them a trip to Cleveland, qualifying for the fourth annual Northeast Ohio Girls Flag Football Tournament at Huntington Bank Field. They are one of 16 teams competing for a girls' flag football championship.
'That was crazy, being on the Cleveland Browns Field. I've never even been to that stadium… It was so many people there. It was families there, screaming and cheering. It felt like I was at a real football game,' said senior Ky'ziya Minor.
The Raiders went 1-1 in the tournament, ending their season just shy of the ultimate goal but it was an experience they'll never forget, competing against teams who have been together for years.
'I'm really proud. Just seeing how far we came from March to now was incredible. I really just wanted to come out, have fun. I wanted the girls to have fun, and I wanted them to learn what it was like to come together as a team,' said head coach Justin Blair.
Their success on the field speaks for itself but it's the bond they've built off of it that's keeping them connected.
'I'm very proud because nobody expected us to win at all. Nobody expected us to make it to the playoffs,' Provitt said. 'I feel like we get more plays down. We can learn from the other girls. We can have fun with it. We can do our thing and bring out our talents.'
Artistics Silk Screening in Warren provided the team with brand new jerseys for their big tournament. The company was called on after a mix-up with their previous uniforms.
The girls were surprised with a jersey reveal before the fourth annual Northeast Ohio Girls Flag Football Tournament.
Despite the quick turnaround, Artisitcs said they were happy to help the girls get game-ready.
'I was just really grateful that we were able to provide something for them. I know they haven't had a lot of opportunities for fundraising and stuff because it's such a new program. We love helping out local schools, but especially Warren. We love it here,' said Artistics Silk Screening owner Brianna Trimbur.
Trimbur said she hopes the uniforms provided a boost for the team and says she was excited to be a part of the team's inaugural season.

Local Navy veteran rallies bike run for mom's cancer fight
ORANGEVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Local Navy veteran Steven Reed is rallying support for his mother, Kathy Reed, who is battling stage 4 ovarian cancer. A special fundraiser and bike run is set for this Saturday at Yeagerbaums Bar & Grille in Orangeville, Trumbull County. All the money raised will help cover her urgent medical expenses. 'We found out at the beginning of March that she has ovarian cancer. She lived in Las Vegas, and within three days of finding out, we flew her here to get her to the Cleveland Clinic because we know that's probably the best place,' Reed said. 'She's gone through three rounds of chemo already. She's a fighter, a warrior.' Sign-ups for the bike run start at 10 a.m.. There will also be a Chinese auction, raffles, and a spaghetti dinner at 5:30 are $30-dollars, passengers are $10, and the food is $15. Sabathia's son returns to Eastwood Field
NILES, Ohio (WKBN) — More than 25 years after CC Sabathia dominated on the mound for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, it was a Sabathia reunion of sorts out at Eastwood Field. This time, it's his son, Carsten, taking the field for the Trenton Thunder. 'He let me know as soon as he knew we were coming out here that he was the first one to get on that mound out here, so it's pretty special, man,' Carsten Sabathia III said. After CC started for the Scrappers back in 1999 with a 1.83 earned run average in six starts, it now feels that in some ways, Carsten III is literally following in his dad's footsteps while playing at some of the same ballparks prior to his Major League career. 'Being able to play in Trenton, where he was able to make some rehab starts and playing out here and be in places that he was able to play is really cool for me and my family,' Sabathia III said. 'So it's truly a blessing. I've been enjoying it.' Growing up around big league clubhouses with his Cy Young and World Series winning father gave him a front-row seat to the life of a ballplayer, even if he didn't fully grasp it at the time. 'I have a funny story. When I was young, I was in the back of the car and I asked him, you know, 'What do you do for a living?'' Sabathia III said. ''I know you play baseball sometimes, but now what do you do to make money?' And he was like, 'I play baseball' and I was like, that's pretty cool, I mean, it kind of blew my mind.' Although this Sabathia isn't on the mound, the 6-foot-4 first baseman is still always learning from the former Cleveland and New York great. 'For me, it's always been dad, he tries to make sure of that. But being able to do what he does and kind of learn and take from his career has been super duper special,' Sabathia III said. 'You know, it's something that I'll always be grateful for.' While most of that advice from dad is how pitchers will go after him in the box, CC still shows off those 3-career-home runs and where Carsten's sweet swing came from. 'He definitely makes sure to remind me that he can swing it, too,' Sabathia III said. 'Those videos are pulled up quite often.' Neshannock softball wins third state title in four years
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WKBN) – The Neshannock Softball team topped South Williamsport 8-3 in the PIAA Class 2A State Championship on Thursday morning at Beard Field at Nittany Lions Softball Park at Penn State University. With the win, the Lancers finish the season a perfect 26-0 for the second consecutive season. Neshannock now owns three perfect seasons in the last four years. Pitcher Addy Frye allowed just one earned run on seven hits with 13 strikeouts for Neshannock. She also came up big at the plate with a solo home run. Gabby Quinn finished the day 2-4 with a double and four RBIs in the victory. Second-baseman Brenna Frengel went 2-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
