Garner dominates Jimenez to claim European title
An inspired and determined Ryan Garner outclassed opponent Salvador Jimenez to claim the vacant EBU European super-featherweight title. The Southampton fighter was victorious in a packed and loud Bournemouth International Centre, and raised both hands in celebration as his unanimous decision victory was read out. He outworked and out-fought his Spanish opponent on the way to retaining his WBC International belt and winning the new blue and gold European title. After the contest all three of the judges' scorecards read 120-108. "It's the best feeling in the world," Garner told BBC Sport."I always said I want another title and this is a massive major title, I'm over the moon. "I can't thank everyone enough, I told everyone to stick with me throughout my career and they did." This win extends Garner's unbeaten record to 17 wins, nine years after he made his professional debut back in 2016.He earned this opportunity to headline in Bournemouth after a points victory over Londoner Archie Sharp at the O2 Arena. Promoter Frank Warren said that if Garner was to be successful then a world title shot could come next. He even teased that it might take place at Southampton's St Mary's Stadium - the football club Garner supports and for whom he played in the youth team.
Garner outworks Jimenez in front of home support
A packed-out arena welcomed Garner loudly as he made his way to the ring. He was backed by a big contingent of Southampton fans singing his name throughout. Jimenez walked to the ring to a loud chorus of boos from the supporters, while the home fighter's entrance was to the tune of the White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army' and loud cheers. 'The Piranha's' start to the contest matched the intensity of the occasion and atmosphere, throwing and landing more punches than Jimenez to both the body and head. Jimenez could not deal with some of his speed early on, retreating and trying to counter-punch but on occasions the Spaniard's efforts resulted in wild swings missing the target. Garner's relentlessness continued and in the fourth round he pushed Jimenez back onto the ropes and hit him with a big left hook that stunned him momentarily. In the sixth round Jimenez showboated a little, glancing outside the ring and smiling as he evaded one of Garner's shots. That smile was then wiped off his face as Garner sunk a big left hook to the body.He continued to be the aggressor into the later rounds, working both the head and body of Jimenez with no sign of letting up. As Jimenez continued to take punishment he received warnings from the referee for punching in pauses to the fight and also pushing his opponent. He pushed Garner to the floor in the 10th round, with fans booing his efforts to slow the contest down. Garner ran straight over to his corner as the final bell sounded, embracing his trainer Wayne Batten and roaring with arms raised.
Edmondson defends Commonwealth light-heavyweight title
Earlier on in the card, British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion Lewis Edmondson defended his title. He beat Nigerian Oluwatosin Kejawa by unanimous decision after a dominant performance. During the eighth round attention went from the ring to the stands as multiple fights were seen to break out and some in attendance were ejected from the arena. Edmondson, known as 'The Saint', moves to 11 victories, remains unbeaten and this win sets him up for a potential future fight with light-heavyweight rival Ezra Taylor. At the fight week weigh-in the two clashed in an interview and both agreed that they would have to face each other next. The were also filmed exchanging heated words backstage after Edmondson's victory. The Nottingham-based Taylor is also undefeated with 10 victories, seven of those coming by knockout.

What new City coach Pep Lijnders refused to say out loud at Liverpool says a lot
After almost 10 years at Liverpool, Pep Lijnders' move to Manchester City has been met with raised eyebrows, yet it seems Pep Guardiola has appointed himself a coach who's not afraid to say how it is Pep Guardiola looks to have appointed an assistant manager who has a wealth of experience in dealing with big personalities in former Liverpool coach Pep Lijnders. Manchester City announced the arrival of Lijnders on Tuesday, as Guardiola looks to shake-up the club's backroom staff ahead of the 2025/26 season. The Dutchman worked with Jurgen Klopp for almost 10 years at the Reds and once discussed just how he deals with being No. 2 to the German – one of football's biggest characters. After a brief managerial stint at Red Bull Salzburg came to an end in December, Lijnders is now back in the UK and has now taken a position under one of the game's other big personas in Guardiola. Yet the Spaniard can't be said to have hired a 'yes man.' Back in July 2020, Lijnders claimed that he had a handle on Klopp's powerful and superstar-like temperament, as the duo forged an off-pitch relationship over racquet sport, padel. "Jurgen is fanatical about it – and he's good, too," Lijnders said. "But we never say he's the best out loud – otherwise he starts to walk around like Conor McGregor." Lijnders comments are no doubt respectful to his former boss, despite the likening his unchecked ego to that of former UFC star McGregor. Yet reading between the lines, his remarks show a man who is unafraid to say it how it is. The former Reds coach also appears fearless when it comes to discussing some of Klopp's less attractive attributes in public. Lijnders' comments go some way to show that he's a coach that can keep major characters in check, as demonstrated by his refusal to massage his former boss' ego. The news of Lijnders joining Liverpool 's Premier League title rivals has naturally been controversial amongst Reds fans. Lijnders did briefly leave Liverpool for a spell at Dutch side NEC Nijmegen at the start of 2018 before coming back to Merseyside. Upon his return he helped turn Liverpool into Premier League champions and aided in delivering the club's sixth European Cup, amongst a plethora of trophies. However, Lijnders' switch to the Citizens comes after he claimed that he would never work as an assistant manager again. 'I owe this club everything,' Lijnders told Liverpool's club's website in February 2024. 'I always said I will finish with Jurgen; the moment I will not assist anyone else, that's the moment I will go and I will manage. That was always the case." Yet the lure of working at one of the Premier League's biggest clubs, and under a manager like Pep Guardiola, is perhaps too tempting for anyone to turn down, regardless of their feelings toward a former employer. Lijnders now joins City six months after being sacked by Salzburg, where he won just 13 of his 29 games. However, his status as a No. 2 is stellar, with Klopp often eager to praise his former right-hand man. "I have been lucky enough to meet many, many people in football during my time in the game and I don't think I have ever met anyone with the energy and enthusiasm he has for this game," Klopp said about Lijnders in 2023. 'I think I have said in the past, there is nothing he does not know about this sport. His passion for it is remarkable and his enthusiasm in training each day is infectious" Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Man Utd and Arsenal suffer Viktor Gyokeres blow as truth emerges over fee
Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has blasted Viktor Gyokeres and his agent, insisting the Arsenal and Manchester United target will not leave for £58million despite a reported 'gentleman's agreement.' Gyokeres is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe having scored 102 goals in his first two seasons in the Portuguese capital. Arsenal have been exploring a deal while United have not given up hope of luring him to Old Trafford despite their lack of European football on offer next season. The subject of his future has dominated headlines in Portugal this week. Despite having a €100million (£84m) release clause, it has been widely reported Sporting will allow him to leave him for €60m plus €10m (£50m plus £8m) in add-ons this summer, stemming from an apparent agreement between the club and player's representatives last year. Sporting president Varandas has confirmed the club are prepared to let the Sweden international leave for less than that €100m release clause – but insisted there has at no stage been an agreement over a specific fee. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. In a brutal response to the stand-off, Varandas revealed the club are still waiting on offers for the striker who is now agitating for a move, insisting the club will not be 'threatened or blackmailed' into doing business. 'It was agreed that Sporting would not demand the release clause at the end of the following season, especially because he was going to be 27,' Varandas said, recalling talks that took place between Sporting, sporting director Hugo Viana and Gyokeres' representatives last summer. 'Then, we knew Viktor's dream of going to a club where he could fight for the Champions League and we have common sense. We guaranteed that we would not demand 100 million. 'In that meeting, the agent wanted to anchor the departure to a value, he spoke of 60 million, 70 million… And I said 'there's no point in setting a value because I don't know what will happen here in a year, if he gets injured, if he has a disappointing season. 'There's no point in setting a value, I don't know if it will be 40, 60 or 80. What I can guarantee is that I will not demand 100 million'. 'From then on, I never spoke to the agent again, I never spoke to the player about departures and values. More Trending '10 months have passed and I see the agent in the press spouting information here and there, but Sporting has common sense, it keeps its word.' Varandas unequivocally ruled out the possibility of Gyokeres leaving for that cut-price fee, warning recent speculation led by the Swede's agent agent 'only makes the situation worse'. 'One thing you should already know is me better. Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for 60+10 because I never promised him that. 'This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. [Are there offers for 60 million?] To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres, neither today nor last season.'
