SAD to start protest against pooling policy from Sep 1

Time of India3 hours ago
Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday announced the launch of an indefinite 'morcha' from Sep 1 against Punjab govt's Land Pooling Policy 2025, calling it a "coercive land grab initiated by (AAP supremo)
Arvind Kejriwal
".
Making the announcement after presiding over a joint meeting of SAD core committee, working committee, constituency in-charges and district presidents, SAD president
Sukhbir Singh Badal
said the party will perform an ardas (prayer) at Akal Takht on Aug 31 before launching its protest.
Badal said he would lead the first 'jatha' (batch) which will march Gurdwara from Amb Sahib on Sep 1 to "the new 'Sheesh Mahal' at the nearby Panchayat Bhawan which Arvind Kejriwal had made his residence in Punjab".
"Party workers from each constituency in Punjab will subsequently participate in a continuous dharna and march from the same site in 'jathas' of 500 persons each indefinitely till the AAP govt revokes the land pooling scheme," he added.
He said a three-member coordinating committee comprising Daljit Singh Cheema, N K Sharma, and Mohali district president Parminder Singh Sohana had also been formed for this purpose.
"The morcha is dedicated to safeguarding Punjab's farmers, khet mazdoor, traders, and other sections of Punjabi society, all of whom will be badly hit by Arvind Kejriwal's Rs 30,000 crore deal with builders of Delhi to collect funds to expand his own political interests in other parts of the country," Badal said.
He alleged that top civil and police officers in the districts were pressuring landowners to "give affidavits that they want to be included in the land pooling scheme".
He warned the officers to desist from such practice, saying that "only a year and a half [of the present AAP led govt] was left."
'Forgive me, return to the mother party': Sukhbir to rebels
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal also made an appeal on Thursday to rebels to return to the party fold. Invoking the resolution of Akal Takht yesterday, which noted that its unity call had not yielded any meaningful result so far, Badal said, "I bow my head to the takht.
I feel it is the duty of every Sikh to obey the directives of the Singh Sahiban. I appeal with folded hands to all Akali leaders who have parted ways with the 105-year-old mother party to return to their roots to strengthen the panth and Punjab.
I also appeal to them to forgive me if I have hurt them in any manner whatsoever."
Alleges witch hunt to target Majithia
Badal called the police action against SAD functionary and his brother-in-law Bikram Singh Majithia as a "witch hunt". He said Majithia was falsely implicated in a fabricated case after repeated investigations by various special investigation yeams (SITs) failed to indict him of any wrongdoing. Badal said SAD would approach the Punjab governor and apprise him of the entire matter soon.

Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project: Ghose panel digs up Rs 612-cr excess payments to L&T, others

Hyderabad: The PC Ghose Commission of Inquiry into the allegations of corruption and irregularities in the construction of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project has dug up massive financial and other misdeeds in the execution of the project. In its 650-page report submitted to the state government recently, the Commission has brought to light undue financial favours as well as excess payments to the contracting agencies involved in the construction of the barrages under the Kaleshwaram project. "Post-tender inclusion of price adjustment clauses in five agreements led to an avoidable payment of price escalation of Rs. 1,342.48 crore. Other inflated rates, undue benefits/excess payments to contractors, including L&T company, amounted to Rs. 612.51 crore", the report said. The L&T company, which constructed the Medigadda barrage, could be the big beneficiary of the excess payments from the state government. The Commission took serious note of the excess payments to the contract agencies and recommended the government to go for a financial investigation into the matter of raising loans by the Kaleshwaram Irrigation Project Corporation Limited (KIPCL) and disbursing the same and the ultimate beneficiary. It suggested to the government to also go for a deep, critical and objective study in respect of observance or otherwise of the exact rules and laws in the matter of off-budget borrowings by the State and KIPCL for construction of the three barrages - Medigadda, Sundilla and Annaram. The procedure adopted for processing and scrutiny of the bills submitted by the agencies (including regarding price adjustment) must also to be investigated in depth, it suggested. The Ghose Commission report included an incisive analysis of the escalation of the project cost from Rs 38,500 crore to Rs 71,436 crore for Kaleshwaram (as per CM's letter in 2016), and later saw revised administrative approvals totaling over Rs.1,10,248.48 crore by March 2022. The Commission also pointed to the Expert Committee's view that shifting of the project from Tummidihetti to Medigadda would render 'approximately Rs. 6,000 crore' of work already done as 'infructuous', plus an additional Rs. 1,500 crore for tunnel lining/filling, and extra land acquisition cost. The report pegged the burden of Off-Budget Borrowings (OBBs) by the KIPCL with state government guarantees at Rs. 87,449.15 crore (as of March 2022). The Commission observed that the burden of repayment of the loan and interest is likely to fall on the State Budget. As of September 2024, Rs 29,737.06 crore had been paid towards the principal and interest. The balance principal is Rs. 64,212.78 crore, with approximate additional interest payable being Rs. 41,638 crore. The Commission pointed out that the loans were diverted/transferred to the government (Rs. 1,690.09 crore) and used for margin money (Rs. 4,011.52 crore), incurring additional interest burdens.

Cong betrayed Telangana's mandate, says Kishan

Hyderabad: Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has launched a blistering attack on the Congress government in Telangana, accusing it of betraying public trust, mismanaging the state economy, and failing to deliver on its pre-election promises. Addressing the media in the national capital on Thursday, Kishan alleged that the Congress party, led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, came to power on the back of six guarantees and 420 sub-guarantees, none of which had been implemented with sincerity. 'Even before coming to power, the Congress lied at every step. Now, after 18 months in office, they have done nothing but take loans to repay debts and make empty trips to Delhi,' he observed and accused the Congress of pushing the state's economy to the brink of collapse through poor governance and incompetence. The Union Minister claimed that Congress was attempting to divert attention from its failures by launching baseless attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government. 'Revanth Reddy, Rahul Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi must take full responsibility for the promises made to the people of Telangana,' he remarked. The Congress failed to implement the Minority, Youth, and BC Declarations. For instance, the Congress had promised Rs 1 lakh crore for BC welfare, but not even Rs 40,000 crore had been spent, the BJP leader said. 'They have deceived BC communities with hollow promises and failed to deliver any meaningful empowerment,' he observed.

Chandrababu pledges to double weavers' income

Vijayawada: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday asserted that the coalition government's primary objective was to double the income of handloom artisans in Andhra Pradesh. He was speaking at the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations here. The Chief Minister declared that financial aid of Rs 25,000 per year would be given to each weaver family under the 'Nethanna Bharosa' scheme. He later visited the Weavershala, which was established with the support of Minister for Education and IT Nara Lokesh, and interacted with artisans, who showed him their products. Reaffirming that the coalition government had been fulfilling its election promises, including those made to the handloom community, he confirmed that, starting this month, 200 units of electricity will be provided free for handlooms and 500 units for power looms. This initiative will benefit 93,000 handloom-owning families and 50,000 power loom-owning families, while costing the government an additional Rs 190 crore annually. He pointed out that the TDP government was the first to introduce a pension for weavers at age 50. Chandrababu Naidu announced that the government would reimburse the 5 per cent GST on handloom products -- a move that will cost the state Rs 15 crore per year. A Thrift Fund of Rs 5 crore will also be established to benefit 5,386 handloom artisans. In a move to preserve the industry's heritage, a Handloom Museum will be set up in Amaravati. The government will also officially celebrate the birth anniversary of handloom weavers' leader Pragada Kotaiah as a state event and install a bronze statue in his honor at a Handloom circle near the NRI Hospital on the Vijayawada-Guntur highway, he said.
