42 Creative Content Fund applications from Sabah and Sarawak approved

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 42 Creative Content Fund (DKK) applications from production companies in Sabah and Sarawak, worth RM7.43 million, have been approved from 2022 up to this month. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the approved applications covered various categories, including feature and short films, documentaries, marketing, scriptwriting and post-production, creating over 1,245 job opportunities. 'As of this month, the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) has also received 36 applications for the Borneo TV Programme Fund and 24 for the Post-Production Fund. 'All applications are evaluated transparently and with integrity by a committee comprising professional panelists and ministry representatives,' he said at the presentation of Creative Content Fund letters of acceptance to Sabah's creative industry players in Sabah, here, Tuesday night. Also present were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Finas Chairman Datuk Hans Isaac, Finas Chief Executive Officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Information Department Director-General Julina Johan. Fahmi said under the DKK, 14 local production companies have been offered the Borneo TV Programme Fund, including six from Sabah. He said the six Sabah companies received approvals amounting to RM1.15 million, expected to create over 200 new jobs. 'As for the Post-Production Fund, nine companies received offers, one of which is from Sabah. For Sabah, one project was approved with a value of nearly RM240,000, adding value to the post-filming process,' he said. He added that the total amount approved for the seven Sabah companies under the Borneo TV Programme Fund and the Post-Production Fund stood at RM1.39 million. Fahmi said various success stories have emerged through government grants and incentives, including the film 'Blood Brothers: Bara Naga', which grossed RM73.6 million, 'Bleat!' which made a mark at Cannes, and most recently, 'Ejen Ali The Movie 2', which opened in Indonesia with over 200,000 viewers in its first week. Fahmi added that the Communications Ministry, through Finas, has agreed to collaborate with Borneo TV via the Borneo TV Programme Fund, with content produced by its recipients to also be aired on the Borneo TV platform. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the DKK has opened vast opportunities for the people of Sabah to showcase their stories, culture and heritage through various mediums such as films, documentaries and television programmes. 'Sabah possesses extraordinary socio-cultural diversity – with more than 30 ethnic groups and over 200 sub-ethnicities. This makes the State one of the richest regions in terms of oral, visual and narrative culture, which deserves attention as a source of authentic content,' he said. He added that Sabah's natural beauty gives it a distinct advantage to be translated into creative content capable of attracting both local and international audiences. JENDELA Phase 2 starts September with hybrid telecom approach
KUALA LUMPUR: The second phase of Malaysia's National Digital Network (JENDELA) will start in September, adopting a hybrid approach to speed up nationwide connectivity, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced. Nearly 3,000 sites will be upgraded under Phase 2, moving away from traditional tower construction. 'We are considering hybrid solutions, like 30-metre monopoles, instead of full-sized towers where feasible. This will accelerate deployment,' Fahmi said during a Dewan Rakyat session. The minister was responding to Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng, who raised concerns over poor 4G and 5G coverage in rural schools. Fahmi confirmed that 4G coverage in Julau's populated areas has reached 58.28 per cent, with 43 new telecom towers and 44 upgraded transmitter stations completed as of June 30. Fibre-optic access has also been extended to 1,391 premises. However, 5G rollout in Julau is still under review, with priority given to urban and industrial zones. 'Rural areas, including Julau, will receive 5G in stages based on infrastructure readiness,' he added. Sarawak's SMART 600 initiative is complementing federal efforts, with 29 new towers already operational and 15 under construction. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has partnered with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) to boost connectivity in the state. Additionally, 12 Point of Presence (PoP) broadband hubs in Julau now offer high-speed internet, with 1,225 subscription ports supporting speeds up to 1Gbps. – Bernama

110 Sarawak students receive RM28m Petronas education sponsorships
KUCHING: A total of 110 Sarawakian students have been awarded Petronas education sponsorships worth RM28 million to pursue higher education at leading universities in Malaysia and abroad. The recipients, selected from nearly 9,000 applicants, demonstrated outstanding academic performance, leadership qualities, and active participation in co-curricular activities during their 2024 Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) examinations. The students will enrol in courses such as chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, economics, and law at institutions including Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and universities in the UK and Australia. The awards were presented by Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah on behalf of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Fatimah expressed gratitude for Petronas' long-standing commitment to nurturing Sarawakian talent. 'The relationship between Petronas and Sarawak is deeply rooted, and their efforts reflect a strong understanding of human capital value,' she said. These students who excelled in 2024 Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) examination received the flagship Petronas Powering Knowledge education sponsorship drawn from nearly 9,000 applicants, and they were selected for their academic excellence, leadership potential, and active involvement in co-curricular activities. They will be pursuing studies in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, economics, law, and other industry-related courses at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and other leading local and overseas universities in the United Kingdom and Australia. Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah presented the awards on behalf of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at a ceremony held here today. Also present was Petronas senior general manager (human capital expertise) Akmal Niza Ahmad.
