Manchester United 2-1 West Ham: Bruno Fernandes brace secures first pre-season win for Red Devils

Yahoo3 days ago
Bruno Fernandes bagged a brace to help Man United to a 2-1 pre-season win over West Ham on Saturday night.
The Portuguese, so often United's saviour last season, was again at the forefront in New Jersey as he scored on either side of the break to cancel out Jarrod Bowen's second-half effort.
Both sides are looking to bounce back from underwhelming 2024-25 campaigns, but it was United who looked the more likely to climb the table as they ran out deserving victors in New Jersey.
Ruben Amorim has waited patiently for pre-season to cement his tactical philosophy, which finally seems to be taking root among the United squad.
They were promptly rewarded for a spell of early pressure. Alphonse Areola challenged for a high ball with just a few minutes played and fumbled, dropping it into the path of Ayden Heaven before tripping the 18-year-old as he scrambled to recover. Fernandes dispatched the resultant penalty coolly to score United's first goal of pre-season.
Amad Diallo thought he had doubled United's advantage with 38 minutes played as he finished from Manuel Ugarte's pass, which was preceded by a mazy dribble, but the Ivorian was flagged narrowly offside in the build-up.
Through the rest of the half, United did the bulk of their work off the ball, but still enjoyed the better chances. Out of possession, they kept West Ham pinned for long stretches with a high-energy press, winning the ball in dangerous areas on several occasions.
They were not clinical with their possession, though, with both Matheus Cunha and Fernandes lashing speculative long-range efforts into the stands before the break.
Similar could be said of the Hammers, who finished the half with 57 per cent possession and showed off some snappy passing moves, but a close-range header from Tomas Soucek cushioned into the hands of Altay Bayindir was their best chance of the half.
United started the second period at pace, forcing two good saves from Areola. He was quick off his line to deny Fernandes a one-on-one, before a full-stretch save was required to deny a De Ligt header moments later.
Fernandes would not be denied twice, though. He found himself in plenty of space on the edge of the box and nonchalantly curled a shot into the top corner to double United's lead, leaving Areola flat-footed.
As energy faded from the tie, Bowen produced a moment of brilliance. Tomas Soucek found him in the wide space, and the Hammers' captain skipped past Heaven before hitting a tidy finish beyond Bayindir to halve the deficit.
Amorim introduced ten pairs of fresh legs with 25 minutes to play, handing a cameo to the newly signed Diego Leon in a blend of first-team regulars and academy hopefuls.
While United pressed with renewed vigour following the shuffle, the rhythm of the match was disrupted by the changes, and there was no change to the scoreline as the clock wound down despite Bowen forcing another strong save from Bayindir.
There are plenty of positives for both managers to take. Cunha was impressive again in his second United outing, while West Ham displayed strong foundations for Potter to build on ahead of the new campaign.
United return to action on Thursday, facing Bournemouth in Chicago, while West Ham take on Everton in their next Summer Series outing.

Dovbyk wanted by Leeds United and West Ham, as Roma look to Krstovic

Leeds United and West Ham United are reportedly targeting Artem Dovbyk, and if he is sold, Roma will reinvest in Lecce striker Nikola Krstovic. Dovbyk was a big investment from FC Girona last summer for €38.5m, but has struggled to replicate his form in LaLiga to Serie A football. The situation seems to have gone from bad to worse under new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who has very different requirements for his centre-forward. Sepp Straka withdraws from BMW Championship for family matter

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Sepp Straka has withdrawn from the BMW Championship because of a private family matter, but still plans to play in the Tour Championship next week. His manager, Butler Melnyk, did not disclose the nature of the family matter in a statement that said Straka had asked for privacy. That leaves a 49-man field for the BMW Championship at Caves Valley. Straka is not affected by the withdrawal. He is No. 5 in the FedEx Cup, too far behind to claim the $5 million prize that goes to the No. 1 player in the standings. Scottie Scheffler has clinched that. All 30 players who reach the Tour Championship start from scratch in pursuit of the FedEx Cup title and its $10 million bonus. Straka is No. 6 in the Ryder Cup standings for Europe. The Austrian native can be bumped out of the top six by Shane Lowry or Ludvig Aberg this week. The leading six players qualify for the European team after the Tour Championship and the British Masters. Either way, Straka is likely to be a pick. He is No. 10 in the world ranking. ___ AP golf: The Associated Press

Are the Dodgers back to championship form?

Yahoo Sports senior MLB analyst Jordan Shusterman and Lance Brozdowski of Marquee Sports dissect the recent surge by the defending World Series champions and the impactful players returning to the lineup. Hear the full conversation on the 'Baseball Bar-B-Cast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript I still think this was a very good weekend for the Dodgers to see the offense start to click. To see Mookie start to look better, to see Snell look the way that he did. I think there's a lot of positives and oh, Tony, I mean, holy crap, like what, unbelievable. He's gonna win MVP. I was a bit like disappointed they didn't make more moves at the deadline or I'm not, not disappointed, but just a little surprised, you know. And I think, I think a lot of the time like GMs and people would just be like, well, we have this guy coming off the IL and that is our deadline move. But I kind of feel like, I kind of feel like the Dodgers actually can execute that properly. Because the names were good enough. Sometimes it's like they're trying to sell you like the Cubs are trying to sell you. James and Ty coming off the IL. Great dude, I love him, but like, it's not really a deadline acquisition. Javier Assad, like, OK, are we getting World Baseball Classic aside, like the Dodgers can go, OK, Bobby Miller all of a sudden is up in the field. He's sitting 99 in the pen at AAA. Roki's gonna come back. I think they bring him back as a reliever would be my guess, which is honestly what I kind of always thought he was. Um, he's not, I don't don't think he's the mix to be a starting pitcher or the spin capacity or anything. And then you bring back Snell and Otani looks great and all of a sudden it's like, oh yeah, that's they're they're probably the the favorite to win the World Series, right? Muny. I know you're focused on the pitchers, rightfully so. Muny back is a huge deal, and that's where you start to have a lineup that looks like the best in baseball, right? And if you do get Mookie going again, Freddie's been awesome and now Tony looking the way that he does. And you mentioned Bobby Miller and Roy, yeah, those two guys in, in how they contribute in any capacity down the stretch. It could be zero innings. It's possible we see them throw zero Major League innings for the rest of the way. It's possible they end up being, uh, very important. We'll see what happens with Tanner Scott. They still have some other relievers, um, that are coming back, but I mean, Otani, like he, he looks better and better now on the mound every time out, the workload is increasing, and he's, you know, going to hit 50 homers again.
