Davison County Sheriff opposing possible prison near Mitchell
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The sheriff for Davison County is officially opposing the idea of building a new men's prison near Mitchell. Last week, Gov. Larry Rhoden's Project Prison Rest task force included Mitchell among Worthing and other existing DOC sites as a possible site for a new men's prison facility to replace the current South Dakota State Penitentiary located in Sioux Falls. 35-year-old arrested in early morning crime spree including stolen bus In a post on social media, Davison County Sheriff Steve Harr said he 'will not be supporting bringing the state prison to Davison County.' 'I contacted Minnehaha County Sheriff Milstead, who sits on the task force, informing him of this. I have asked him to forward it on to the entire task force,' Harr wrote. Harr said prior to last week's task force meeting, he had signed a letter of support for the prison near Mitchell. 'This was done with hopes Davison County would make the final cut and some conversations would start,' Harr wrote. 'It was not done as a statement of 'we need a prison in Mitchell.' Well, as you know, this was successful, as the conversation all over town is on this topic.' Harr said he believes it has become clear there's a large number of residents opposed to a new men's prison being built near Mitchell. 'My job as Sheriff is to look out for the citizens of Davison County and I feel that is what is being done by coming to this decision,' Harr said. 'I would like to thank everyone that has reached out or made your concerns known in other ways.' Project Prison Reset plans to meet again in July to discuss further options for replacing the State Penitentiary. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. FAMU athletics director Angela Suggs charged in relation to previous job, FDLE says
Recently appointed Florida A&M Vice President and Director of Athletics Angela Suggs has been arrested and charged with grand theft and other counts related to alleged false claims on travel vouchers in her previous job, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Before she joined FAMU in October 2024, Suggs was president and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation, or FSF. "The investigation began in November 2024 after FDLE received a criminal referral from the Florida Department of Commerce's Inspector General with an audit of Suggs' business credit card purchases and corresponding travel reimbursements," FDLE said in a June 9 statement. (The Florida Sports Foundation is a "direct-support organization" operating under the Florida Department of Commerce.) "The investigation revealed Suggs misused her FSF-issued credit card to make wire transfers and cash withdraws and personal purchases at casinos during business trips, totaling more than $24,000," the statement said. "She then falsified travel vouchers, coding the unauthorized charges as meals. "When asked about the unauthorized charges, Suggs claimed some were for business meals and others were accidentally charged to the business card. She failed to fully repay (the foundation) for her personal expenditures." Suggs turned herself in June 9 at the Leon County Jail. She was released from custody on a $13,500 bond shortly after 2:30 p.m., court records show. In a statement to the university community, Interim FAMU President Timothy Beard said he was "aware of the allegations involving our athletics director, Angela Suggs, while she was working with a former employer. While the matter is unrelated to her duties as an employee at FAMU, we are monitoring the situation and will respond in the future as appropriate." The Florida Sports Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit corporation, serving as the Sports Industry Development Division of the State of Florida. Suggs started at FAMU on Oct. 7, 2024 and replaced Tiffani-Dawn Sykes. Sykes resigned in August 2024 amidst a leadership change administered by FAMU Interim President Dr. Timothy Beard. In September 2024, FAMU's Board of Trustees unanimously approved a three-year, $750,000 contract ($250,000 annually) for Suggs to become the university's VP and Director of Athletics. Suggs joined FAMU from the Florida Sports Foundation, where she had served as CEO and President since 2017 and oversaw the state's nearly $60 billion sports tourism industry. Maicel Green, an Olympian gold medalist and NCAA champion in track and field, is currently CEO and President of the Foundation. According to Suggs' bio on FAMU's website, she "led efforts in securing, hosting, and retaining sporting events and sports-related business throughout the state" for the sports foundation and "managed multi-million dollar grant programs supporting both amateur and professional sports events." Previous coverage: Angela Suggs up and active during FAMU homecoming, first month as new athletic director Suggs is a 1992 FAMU graduate who previously served as the Rattlers' Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). She holds a bachelor's degree in economics from FAMU and a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Thomas University. The Tallahassee native who also attended FAMU DRS is a life member of the FAMU National Alumni Association. Prior to joining the Foundation, Suggs held various roles at Florida A&M University, including Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). A Florida Dog Was Enjoying His Backyard When 'All of a Sudden' an Alligator Dragged Him Away
An alligator attacked a German shepherd dog outside the pet's home in Wesley Chapel, Florida, on June 2 The dog, Zeus, suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured jaw and several puncture wounds at the neck, according to a GoFundMe page for the pup Zeus' family says the attacking alligator dragged the dog into a nearby pond, but eventually let the pet go, giving the canine a chance to escapeA German shepherd dog narrowly escaped death in an alligator attack just outside of his home in Wesley Chapel, Florida, according to the pet's parents. The dog, named Zeus, suffered multiple injuries after "a large alligator broke through [the] fence" of his owner's home and "attacked him" on the night of June 2, according to a GoFundMe page created by the dog's distraught owner, Susan Alkhatib. "Our beloved dog Zeus was sitting peacefully in the lanai with my dad when he heard a small animal in the backyard," wrote Alkhatib. According to the owner, Zeus "ran out the doggy door to investigate" and "within seconds," the alligator "grabbed the dog and dragged him back into the water." "We rushed outside with a flashlight and were shocked to see Zeus swimming back toward us, wounded but fighting to survive," Alkhatib continued. "My mom waded into the water to help him out, and we rushed him to the nearest emergency vet as he was bleeding heavily from his mouth." One family member recalled the attack to WFLA, "All of a sudden, I couldn't hear him anymore. My dad came in frantic. I'd never seen him like that. He said, 'The alligator just took Zeus.'" "The alligator had just let go of Zeus," Alkhatib told the outlet. "We started yelling at him to come toward us. When he got closer, he got tired. So we had to kind of go into the pond a little bit to get him." Zeus suffered a displaced jaw and multiple puncture wounds to his neck in the vicious attack, according to the GoFundMe page. The page has raised over $6,800 of its $10,000 to help cover veterinary bills. Photos released by the dog's owner show the pooch bleeding from his neck and his injured jaw. Alkhatib called the dog's escape from the attack "a miracle" on her GoFundMe page. "The vet told us the gator had just missed his jugular — it looked like Zeus's entire head had been in the gator's mouth. The fact that he made it out alive is nothing short of a miracle," she wrote.
