Netflix fans say hidden gem 'crazy' sci-fi movie 'the best they've ever seen'

This science fantasy flick boasts a star-studded cast of Hollywood's finest and is now catching the eye of movie buffs on Netflix. Okja, a science fiction adventure film directed by Oscar-winner Bong Joon Ho, famed for his work on Parasite, is gaining fresh attention.
The director, celebrated for his dark humour and exploration of social and class issues, seems to have hit the mark again with this 2017 offering. Fans are interpreting the film's underlying messages as a critique of "corporate greed" and a nod to "pro-animal liberation," with some suggesting it even carries undertones promoting veganism.
Despite this, the director has clarified that Okja was not meant to be an indictment of meat consumption but rather a reflection on the treatment of animals in industrial farming.
A Rotten Tomatoes review praises the film: "A brilliantly shot movie that isn't afraid to dive deep into your emotions with its satire on reality. Good performances and visual effects sell the story they're trying to take and leave you rethinking your own morals. It's a special kind of movie, with a message worth telling."
The sci-fi narrative centres around a young girl and her cherished pig, from whom she is inseparable, reports the Mirror US. The twist? The pig is gigantic, leading to its abduction by a global conglomerate.
Mija's heart-wrenching quest to save her cherished pig from cruelty and looming slaughter in the movie throws a spotlight on the contentious issues surrounding animal rights, while beautifully capturing the profound connection shared between humans and animals.
With a stellar cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins, and Shirley Henderson, it's no shocker that the flick keeps raking in accolades. One impressed fan wrote: "The performances are generally exceptional."
Another viewer said: "This was one of the strangest movies I've seen in ages, and it was absolutely brilliant. The CGI giant pig was amazing, Jake Gyllenhaal was totally unhinged (and hilarious), and Tilda Swinton was as weird and wacky and wonderful as ever."
Yet, the true hero of the tale is the intrepid farm girl, embodied by South Korean starlet Ahn Seo-hyun, who was a mere 13 at the time of filming. A rave review highlighted: "It touches on a lot of social issues, and the acting from the protagonist, Seo-Hyeon Ahn, was phenomenal." Another said: "It is definitely worth the watch!".
Okja made its grand debut at the Cannes Film Festival back in 2017, snatching up a remarkable four-minute standing ovation from those in attendance. Upon its release, the motion picture garnered a hefty box office sum of 2.3 billion KRW (about £1.6 million) and has been hailed by many as arguably "the best" original movie produced by Netflix.
The much-lauded adventure film Okja is now ready for viewing on Netflix.

First look at Cillian Murphy's powerful new Netflix film Steve

The teaser for Cillian Murphy's highly anticipated next film has just dropped ahead of the movie's release on Netflix. The Oscar-winner's new movie, Steve, tells the story of a devoted headteacher of the same name Steve as he battles to save his last-chance reform school from closure while grappling with his own mental health. The film also follows the story of Shy - a troubled teen who attends the school - and his struggles to reconcile his past with an uncertain future. The movie, set in the mid-90s, is directed by Tim Mielants and is based on Max Porter's Sunday Times Bestseller Shy, which Cillian said "broke his heart". Cillian is not just playing the movie's main character; he is also producing it alongside his collaborator Alan Moloney. The pair founded Big Things Films, their independent and story-driven production company, back in 2022. They aim to collaborate with filmmakers and writers who have 'something to say' and are passionate about what they do. Their first movie, Small Things Like These, was set against the backdrop of the Magdalene Laundries in 1980s Ireland and received rave reviews from critics. It featured Cillian himself alongside Cork actress Eileen Walsh, and was also directed by Tim Mielants. Steve will be in select theatres from September 19 before being released on Netflix on October 3. ‘Get the statue changed' – British actress Joanna Lumley criticises Molly Malone statue after filming in Dublin

Ms Lumley is most known for her portrayal of the renegade Patsy Stone in BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous between 1992 and 2012. She made the claims while promoting season 2 of hit Netflix series Wednesday, which was filmed entirely in Ireland and stars American actor Jenna Ortega as the protagonist. The statue, located beside St Andrew's Church on Dublin's Suffolk Street, was erected 37 years ago and is an ode to a fabled young local woman named Molly Malone who wandered the city with her wheelbarrow selling cockles. She was made famous by the ballad Sweet Molly Malone, written in the late nineteenth century. However, Ms Lumley was not quite drawn in by the charming folklore tale surrounding the young Dublin woman affectionately known by locals as 'The Dolly with the Trolley' and 'The Flirt win the Skirt'. "Do you know why it is all wrong? If you listen to the song, she was a little beautiful, but thin, undernourished ill Irish girl who was a fishmonger's daughter and she pushed her little wheelbarrow and she got really ill and she died of a fever,' she told TodayFM. "What is this brazen hussy doing with her dress all down to here and the big tits out? The statue is wrong. "Get the statue changed!' The statue has been at the centre of frequent criticism in recent years as tourists are seen regularly seen posing for photos while groping her breasts. Stewards were put in place by Dublin City Council (DCC) for a one-week pilot scheme in May to stop people from performing the lewd act. Some DCC councillors had suggested building flower beds around the statue as an alternative method of preventing people from touching her.

Harry's like vacuous Meghan's hostage-in-the-attic – he's so lost he ruins EVERYTHING he touches, expert slams

WHAT'S HIS PLAN? Harry's like vacuous Meghan's hostage-in-the-attic – he's so lost he ruins EVERYTHING he touches, expert slams PRINCE Harry acts like Meghan's hostage-in-the-attic and ruins everything he touches, an expert has claimed. The Sussexes announced yesterday they signed a new "multi-year, first look deal" with Netflix to produce "film and television projects". Advertisement 9 Prince Harry is 'lost', according to a royal expert Credit: Reuters 9 Season 2 of Meghan's controversial cookery show will drop later this month Credit: Netflix 9 It is yet to be revealed whether Harry will appear in the second season Credit: BackGrid However, broadcaster and journalist Esther Krakue told The Sun's Royal Exclusive show how the Duke will be at the mercy of his wife. In harsh comments, she claimed Harry has "no value in terms of entertainment". "Harry is in the attic, he's a hostage, and thankfully he chewed through his leash just in time to make an appearance in the season two trailer," she told The Sun's royal editor Matt Wilkinson. "But he is nowhere to be seen. Yes, obviously, he's dealing with the fallout from his charity and trying to find his own thing. Advertisement "But the man is lost. I mean, he's really trying to find his feet. "He has a kind of brown Midas touch, which I'm sure the viewers can infer what I mean by that. "And really, this creative side of this endeavor has really been Meghan's push." The expert added that she's interested to see how the Duchess handles directing - having remained in front of the camera on previous projects. Advertisement Ms Krakue claimed the actress is used to being a "b-list presence in Hollywood", who remained in the "background". "If I was a Netflix executive and I was negotiating this new non-deal with Harry and Meghan," she continued. Harry & Meghan were 'not in a strong position' & signed Netflix deal for 'much less'… TV giant 'did it for publicity' "I'd probably want to throw my shoe at Harry because at least Meghan is entertaining in the sense that she's so vacuous, it's almost like you marvel at it. "But Harry's not a creative and he's never had anything in this industry. Advertisement "And I think because he's come from a world where everyone fawns at everything that he does because he's Prince Harry. Ms Krakue highlighted Harry's Polo documentary flop "that really just didn't connect". 9 Prince Harry's polo documentary was watched by just 500,000 people Credit: Reuters 9 The couple trashed the Royal Family in their 2022 docuseries Credit: NETFLIX Advertisement 9 The couple have signed a new deal with the streaming giant Credit: Splash The broadcaster estimated the streaming giant should have "sunk" it's funds into Meghan instead. "Even though she's not entertaining the way that she thinks she is," Ms Krakue added. "Harry just has, there's just nothing to him in terms of entertainment value. Advertisement "And I think this is probably why Netflix are like, yeah, let's deal with the wife." It was previously thought that the Sussexes' £74million deal with the streamer was not going to be renewed. Harry's vanity project, Polo, about the sport, was watched by just 500,000 people. But it was also understood that bosses were mildly infuriated by Meghan making her As Ever brand a priority. Advertisement 'Meghan & Harry need to come up with a hit soon' By Matt Wilkinson JUST when you thought it was safe to turn the telly on again... Harry and Meghan are back. And their multi-year renewal with Netflix means they are not going away anytime soon. There have been tense negotiations in recent weeks but Netflix is so deeply involved with Meghan's As Ever brand it was always likely that the streaming giants would want them back. Make no mistake, Harry and Meghan would have been desperate for the deal to be renewed. They will likely be opening a bottle or two of As Ever Rose in Montecito. Because they have invested heavily in Archewell Productions and getting on board with Netflix is central not only to their post-Royal endeavours but more importantly crucial to their bank accounts. If they lost their Netflix money then how could they afford their life in the US? While the length of the deal or how much the couple are getting paid is vague we do know that Meghan will appear in a 'holiday special' in December that will likely clash with the Princess of Wales's annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey. And finally, two years after I revealed in The Sun the couple had bought the rights to the book Meet Me At The Lake, production is in active development. Sources close to the couple are coy about whether Harry or Meghan will appear on screen for the production of Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within which will air later this year. But perhaps the best piece of news from the announcement is no repeat of the six-part documentary which dumped on the Royal Family. However, 'Harry & Meghan' was a ratings dream and none of their projects since have been anywhere as successful. They need to come up with a hit soon. And this 'first look' deal means Netflix has the first option on new projects from the couple without any guaranteed commitment. But remember the Sussexes are not the only Royals to be in bed with Netflix. The King will feature in a documentary on The King's Foundation with Idris Elba. The With Love, Meghan viewing figures have reportedly been "dismal". The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have previously released a number of shows on the platform, including a 2022 documentary on their lives and lifestyle show With Love, Meghan this year. They had secured a lucrative five-year contract - thought to be worth more than $100 million (£74 million) - with Netflix after quitting as senior working royals in 2020. However, a new deal has been signed for "much less", an insider told Page Six. Advertisement Meghan said in a statement: 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand. "My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.' 'DOWNGRADE' Netflix will only pay for projects they want to screen, rather than pay in a single multi-million pound agreement like the one signed in 2020, The Sun understands. The Sun can also reveal, however, that the streaming giants will cover Archewell Productions's overheads, including all costs for its offices and staff. Advertisement The new deal was also described as a "downgrade" by PR expert Mark Borkowski. He told the Mail: "I think Netflix has done a very neat job of pivoting away from two very expensive people who didn't deliver, and they've taken that deal off the table, and they've given them a modest one. "It's not like they're gradually uncoupling – it's a downgrade. Netflix are not going to expose themselves to those budgets again. It's Netflix saying, 'Let's have a look at your content, but we'll pick and choose, mate'." CRINGE NEW TRAILER This comes as mum-of-two Meghan teased a new trailer for her critically panned Netflix show. Advertisement Footage showed the Duchess with a host of famous guests speaking about how she "loves finding new ways to show people she cares" ahead of the release of the second series of With Love, Meghan on August 26. The show's second series claims it will be "fun and heartwarming", with plethora of celebrity guests due to make their appearance. This includes model Chrissy Teigen, podcast pal Jamie Kern Lima, and Netflix Queer Eye star Tan France. Meghan can be seen laughing alongside guests at her luxury Montecito home in the trailer, even joking at the end about Prince Harry's lack of love for lobster. Advertisement Speaking to Chef Andrés, she says: "You know who doesn't like lobster? My husband." In response, the chef light-heartedly retorts: "And you married him anyway?" In one cringey moment during the trailer, in which she is seen cooking and baking with celebrity friends, the Duchess of Sussex also says: "I love the idea of just spending time together... and finding new ways to show people you care." She adds: "There are easy ways to show up, lovingly." Advertisement On top of Season 2 of With Love, Meghan - which will drop later this month - the couple will also film a "Holiday Celebration" Christmas special. The couple will also release a short film called "Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within" which will look at Uganda's Masaka region and the HIV/AIDS crisis there. This has echoes of Harry's mum Diana's work, who pioneered social change on perceptions of HIV/AIDS. 9 The second season Meghan Markle's show With Love, Meghan is due to be released on August 26 Credit: JAKE ROSENBERG/NETFLIX Advertisement 9 The trailer sees Meghan cooking, baking and creating drinks with celebrity friends Credit: COURTESY OF NETFLIX
