Music Review: Miley Cyrus' 'Something Beautiful' is a return to form. 'Hannah Montana' fans, rejoice

LOS ANGELES (AP) — For longtime Miley Cyrus fans, her ninth studio album is bound to live up to its name. It truly is 'Something Beautiful.'
Over the years, the Grammy winner has demonstrated that she is unequivocally a pop star. She's also a dedicated student of contemporary music history and various genres, something she's made clear through her love of performing cover songs and across her diverse discography (lest anyone forget her 2020 glam rock-inspired concept album, 'Plastic Hearts').
On 'Something Beautiful,' Cyrus proves that she is most in her element musically when firmly holding onto those myriad identities, weaving together an inventive tapestry of pop, rock, electronic, disco and even funk — like in the album's soulful, heartache anthem, 'Easy Lover.'
Most of Cyrus' album comprises ABBA-channeling earworms; 'End of the World' has a piano riff that screams 'Dancing Queen.' But she balances '70s nostalgia with belting vocals and wide-ranging instrumentation throughout. Cyrus arguably hasn't had this kind of sonic variation on a record since 2010's 'Can't Be Tamed.'
'Something Beautiful' is accompanied by a musical film of the same name, which will premiere in June at the Tribeca Film Festival. The aptly named first track, 'Prelude,' is a narrated introduction, which gives the wrong impression that the album only serves as a score to the film. It stands on its own.
That's because most of the 13 tracks reflect Cyrus's work over the past two decades. 'More To Lose,' for example, is a big-hearted ballad that sounds like it could have been featured on a 'Hannah Montana' soundtrack, though her vocals and musical sensibilities have matured. 'Walk of Fame' — her upbeat collaboration with Brittany Howard — also harks back to her early discography, reminiscent of songs like 'Liberty Walk' and 'Scars' on 'Can't Be Tamed.'
Cyrus draws on other past eras too, like in 'Pretend You're God,' which evokes the psychedelic sound of her 2015 album, 'Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz.'
The album does benefit from a newfound sense of structure, perhaps from the presumed guardrails in place by the accompanying film. Where Cyrus has previously struggled to fit certain songs, especially ballads, into the context of her previous albums — the stripped-down 'Wonder Woman' felt arbitrarily tacked onto the otherwise elaborate 'Endless Summer Vacation,' for example — there is a continuity throughout 'Something Beautiful' in its eclecticism.
There's an electronic, energetic pivot toward the second half of the album, specifically in the tracks 'Reborn' and 'Every Girl You've Ever Loved.' The latter sounds strikingly like something Lady Gaga would have put on 'Born This Way.' Coincidentally, there is a narrator on the song who sounds eerily like Gaga.
In many ways, the record is a return to form for the 32-year-old, whose pop reputation has always been in tension with her interest in other genres. But she also demonstrates, through those electronic songs in particular, how her sound has evolved and expanded over time.

Gladys Knight, 81, Speaks Out After Son Accuses Her Younger Husband Of Elder Abuse

Gladys Knight has assured fans her mental health is just fine after some concerns sparked by her son. Source: Maury Phillips/BET / Getty The soul music legend is speaking out after her eldest son, Shanga Hankerson, claimed his mother was facing elder abuse from her much-younger husband, William McDowell. According to Knight, those claims couldn't be further from the truth. 'I'm sorry that my health and performances have been misrepresented,' she said in a statement, per The Post . 'I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well for someone who has been on stage for three quarters of a century, hard to believe, right?' The songstress continued, 'I'm healthy and happy and visiting friends and family these last few months. I'm excited to get back on the road with my sisters and on stage with The Queens Tour. See you soon.' In addition to Knight's statement, her publicist, Laura Herlovich, also debunked the rumors, telling the outlet that the legendary singer and her team are 'greatly saddened by Shanga's unfounded allegations, especially as he has had no substantial contact with her.' She added, 'At this time our lawyers have no choice but to explore any and all legal remedies due to Shanga's defamatory comments.' Knight's rebuttal came after Hankerson, 49, claimed that his mother was being subjected to elder abuse at the hands of McDowell. He made such claims during an interview with The Shade Room , alleging McDowell was forcing Knight to tour despite her declining health. 'I did my best to give [McDowell] the space to play the role of husband and do what was in my mom's best interest, and he has not done that,' he alleged at the time. 'Why is she working? Why is she in this situation where she's being made to believe that she has to work like this? That's really my issue with it.' Hankerson went on to recall a time when the 'Every Beat of My Heart' singer allegedly 'zoned out' while performing with her band. 'The band played about two or three extra bars. And she zoned out. The background singer started singing … and that brought her back,' Hankerson explained. 'They're having to rewind the teleprompters because my mom is forgetting to even look at them.' Knight and McDowell, who is reportedly 33 years younger than the soul singer, got married in 2001. In addition to Shanga, who she shares with music executive Barry Hankerson, the seven-time Grammy winner also has daughter Kenya Newman, 62, and late son James Newman III with her first ex-husband, James Newman. Knight was also married to Shanga's father, Barry, from 1974 to 1979; and former Ohio representative Les Brown, from 1995 to 1997. 'Ketamine Queen' accused of selling fatal dose to Matthew Perry agrees to plead guilty

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A woman known as the 'Ketamine Queen,' charged with selling Matthew Perry the drug that killed him, agreed to plead guilty Monday. Jasveen Sangha becomes the fifth and final defendant charged in the overdose death of the 'Friends' star to strike a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, avoiding a trial that had been planned for September. She agreed in a signed statement filed in court to plead guilty to five federal criminal charges, including providing the ketamine that led to Perry's death. In a brief statement, Sangha's lawyer Mark Geragos said only, 'She's taking responsibility for her actions.' Prosecutors had cast Sangha, a 42-year-old citizen of the U.S. and the U.K., as a prolific drug dealer who was known to her customers as the 'Ketamine Queen,' using the term often in press releases and court documents. She agreed to plead guilty to one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, three counts of distribution of ketamine, and one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death or serious bodily injury. The final plea deal came a year after federal prosecutors announced that five people had been charged in Perry's Oct. 28, 2023 death after a sweeping investigation. Sangha admitted in the agreement to selling four vials of ketamine to another man, Cody McLaury, hours before he died from an overdose in 2019. McLaury had no relationship to Perry. Prosecutors will drop three other counts related to the distribution of ketamine, and one count of distribution of methamphetamine that was unrelated to the Perry case. Sangha will officially change her plea to guilty at an upcoming hearing, where sentencing will be scheduled, prosecutors said. She could get up to 45 years in prison. The judge is not bound to follow any terms of the plea agreement, but prosecutors said in the document that they will ask for less than the maximum. She and Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who pleaded guilty last month, had been the primary targets of the investigation. Three other defendants — Dr. Mark Chavez, Kenneth Iwamasa and Erik Fleming — pleaded guilty in exchange for their cooperation, which included statements implicating Sangha and Plasencia. Perry was found dead in his Los Angeles home by Iwamasa, his assistant. The medical examiner ruled that ketamine, typically used as a surgical anesthetic, was the primary cause of death. Sangha presented a posh lifestyle on Instagram, with photos of herself with the rich and famous in cities around the globe. Prosecutors said she privately presented herself as a dealer who sold to the same kind of high-class customers. Perry had been using ketamine through his regular doctor as a legal, but off-label, treatment for depression, which has become increasingly common. Perry, 54, sought more ketamine than his doctor would give him. He began getting it from Plasencia about a month before his death, then started getting still more from Sangha about two weeks before his death, prosecutors said. Perry and Iwamasa found Sangha through Perry's friend Fleming. In their plea agreements, both men described the subsequent deals in detail. Fleming messaged Iwamasa saying Sangha's ketamine was 'unmarked but it's amazing,' according to court documents. Fleming texted Iwamasa that she only deals 'with high end and celebs. If it were not great stuff she'd lose her business.' With the two men acting as middlemen, Perry bought large amounts of ketamine from Sangha, including 25 vials for $6,000 in cash four days before his death. That purchase included the doses that killed Perry, prosecutors said. On the day of Perry's death, Sangha told Fleming they should delete all the messages they had sent each other, according to her indictment. Her home in North Hollywood, California, was raided in March 2024 by Drug Enforcement Administration agents who found large amounts of methamphetamines and ketamine, according to an affidavit from an agent. She has been held in federal custody for about a year. None of the defendants has yet been sentenced. Sangha also agreed in her plea deal not to contest the seizure of her property that went with the investigation, including more than $5,000 in cash. Perry struggled with addiction for years, dating back to his time on 'Friends,' when he became one of the biggest stars of his generation as Chandler Bing. He starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004 on NBC's megahit series.
