Moving Nuclear Subs Isn't Something You Announce on Social Media

Bloomberg2 days ago
Over the last week, two political leaders have exchanged barbs underlining the powerful nuclear arsenals of their respective nations. It was not just a pointless demonstration of bravado — it also showed that careless words and vague military threats can move the world closer to a disastrous conflict.
The first to lash out was Dimitry Medvedev, a former president and prime minister of Russia, who now serves as deputy chair of President Vladimir Putin's security council. In a social media post on July 28, he said a US ultimatum for Moscow to come to the negotiating table over Ukraine was a 'threat and a step towards war.' Later, he alluded to Russia's 'dead hand' nuclear launch system, which automatically fires a nuclear strike if the nation is attacked with such weapons.

More Republican lawmakers call out Canada over wildfire smoke

WASHINGTON — More Republican lawmakers are calling out Canada because of wildfires sending smoke billowing across the international border into their states. Wisconsin state Rep. Calvin Callahan has joined other Republican state lawmakers from Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota in filing a formal complaint against Canada to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the International Joint Commission. In a news release issued today, Callahan says that 'if Canada can't get these wildfires under control, they need to face real consequences.' He joins a chorus of Republican politicians at other levels of government who have been voicing concerns about Canada's wildfires. Michigan Rep. Jack Bergman sent a letter to Canadian Sen. Michael MacDonald on Monday calling for stronger forest management policies and more accountability from Canadian officials. Michigan Rep. John James sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney last week saying his constituents are choking on toxic wildfire smoke. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 6, 2025. Russia secondary sanctions still on track for Friday after Putin, Witkoff meeting

WASHINGTON — US sanctions targeting nations that buy Russian oil will kick in on Friday after Vladimir Putin refused to end his invasion of Ukraine by President Trump's deadline, a senior White House official said following direct talks between Washington and Moscow on Wednesday. Following a three-hour meeting between Putin and Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff, the Kremlin said it wanted to continue talking — which Trump has publicly suspected of being a strategy to 'tap along' his administration. 'The Russians are eager to continue engaging with the United States,' the US official said in a statement, adding: 'The secondary sanctions are still expected to be implemented on Friday.' Wednesday marked the first time the parties had met for such talks since April, when it became evident little progress was being made toward an end to Europe's bloodiest conflict since World War II.
