'Superman' box office collections day 8: James Gunn's film slows down; still steady at Rs 37 Cr India net
After a strong opening week, 'Superman' (3D) entered its second Friday with a noticeable dip in momentum. The film, which marked the beginning of James Gunn's new DC Universe, added an estimated Rs 1.50 crore to its India net collection on Day 8 as reported by the Sacnilk website.
This takes the total earnings to Rs 37 crore across all languages in the domestic market.
The 3D action spectacle, led by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, had wrapped up its Week 1 with Rs 35.5 crore, driven largely by strong weekend numbers. But with the arrival of new releases and a dip in word-of-mouth traction in certain regions, Superman is now showing signs of the typical second-week slowdown.
Superman The Immigrant? James Gunn's Bold Take On Hero's Identity Sets Fans Off In A Fiery Debate
Occupancy slips, especially in Hindi and regional markets
The overall English 3D occupancy on Friday, July 18, stood at 19.18%, with a steady rise through the day—starting at 6.72% in the morning and climbing to 34.86% by night.
However, the Hindi version saw a stark decline. Morning shows clocked just 3.57% occupancy, and even night shows only reached 7.53%. Tamil and Telugu markets also had an average occupancy hovering around 14–15%.
Where the film stands now
While the Rs 1.50 crore haul on Day 8 suggests slowing footfall, the film's positioning as the foundational entry into DCU Phase One might keep the momentum alive through the weekend.
ETimes review for the film reads, "Superman is entertaining, enjoyable, even epic but never intense.

James Gunn's non-origin story soars high visually but stays limited emotionally. The director's unyielding need to go traditional comes at a cost. It is still a tremendous cinematic experience that deserves to be watched in IMAX."
With competition heating up and word-of-mouth now mixed, the next few days will be crucial in determining whether Superman can fly past the Rs 50 crore India net mark or plateau in the mid-40s. For now, it holds steady—but the cape is flapping in slightly gentler winds.

Kishore Kumar initially refused to sing my composition, reveals Anup Jalota: ‘He said tum kuchh classical bana doge'
The late legendary actor-singer Kishore Kumar and 'bhajan samrat' Anup Jalota belong to different schools of music. While the former is as mainstream as it gets, the latter is more steeped in classical music and devotional songs. However, they've worked together in a couple of films. In fact, Jalota was known as 'junior Kishore' in college. 'During my college days in Lucknow, I used to sing film songs. My voice sounded a little similar to Kishore da's. It still does today. When I sing Kishore da's songs today, people find that tone and find it very comforting to listen to,' said Jalota. The 71-year-old singer studied music at Bhatkhande Music Institute in Lucknow. In the interview with The Lallantop, Anup Jalota recalled telling Kishoare Kumar that he was known as 'junior Kishore' in college, when he visited the singer at his home in Mumbai. Jalota had approached Kumar then to sing in two Hindi films that he was composing for — Ram Govind's Patton Ki Baazi (1986) and Tohfa Mohabbat Ka (1988), starring Govinda. 'When I reached his place, Kishore da said, 'I won't sing your songs.' I asked why. He said, 'Tum kuchh classical-vassical bana doge (You'll make something classical).' I've heard you're trained in classical music.' I said, 'No, I've made a song as per your style.' When I made him listen to it, it felt like Kishore has only sung it. So then he said, 'This is my song. I'll only sing it.' And then he did, wholeheartedly,' recalled Jalota. Anup Jalota also hailed Kishore Kumar as a 'great actor,' which also reflected in his singing. 'He was a master at both serious acting and comedy. That mood also reflected in his singing. He was always in a fun mood. He loved comedy. He used to pull the leg of the director or the producer, whoever would come to the recording,' said Jalota. Jalota recalled recording a song composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar, in which he was singing alongside Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Hariharan, and Ravindra Sathe. 'Kishore ji whispered into my ears, 'You guys will sing this one very well. What would I do here? Don't tell anyone, I'm leaving.' He sneaked out quietly. When Hridaynath ji asked Kishore ji to start singing, I told him he left. He was like that. He knew he'd explain it later that the other four sing better than him,' said Jalota. Saiyaara box office Day 2: Ahaan-Aneet's film shines brighter, nears Rs 50 crore
Mohit Suri's 'Saiyaara' is not just a film - it's a phenomenon. The romantic drama featuring fresh faces Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda has emerged as the biggest surprise hit of the year, rewriting the rules for debutant-led cinema. After raking in Rs 21 crore on its opening day, the film showed even stronger momentum on Saturday, pulling in Rs 24 crore. With a domestic total of Rs 45 crore in just two days, 'Saiyaara' is well on track to cross the Rs 50 crore mark by the end of its opening even more striking is that 'Saiyaara' is outperforming titles fronted by established stars. From Rajkummar Rao's 'Maalik' to Shahid Kapoor's 'Deva' and Kajol's 'Maa', the film has outshone them all. Even the nostalgic re-releases of iconic romantic dramas like 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' and 'Sanam Teri Kasam' couldn't match the audience pull 'Saiyaara' is commanding. The verdict is clear: romance is making a big-screen comeback - and Gen Z is showing up for the most remarkable part of 'Saiyaara's' journey is that it's achieved this without any pre-release promotional blitz. In fact, director Mohit Suri consciously chose to keep the lead pairing under wraps until release, echoing his strategy with 'Aashiqui 2' when he introduced Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. The gamble has paid off - again. Watch the trailer here: Aneet Padda, known for her breakout performance in 'Big Girls Don't Cry', has been praised for her nuanced turn, while Ahaan Panday is already being touted as a star in the making. The film's high occupancy rate - clocking in at 51.24 per cent for Hindi shows on Saturday - signals not just early interest but strong staying a box office climate where even star kids struggle to draw crowds - Khushi Kapoor and Junaid Khan's 'Loveyaapa' closed at a modest Rs 6.8 crore - 'Saiyaara' stands tall. Even Alia Bhatt's 'Jigra', which benefited from star power and marketing muscle, opened lower in comparison with Rs 30 crore in two by Yash Raj Films and buoyed by glowing reviews and powerful word-of-mouth, 'Saiyaara' proves that audiences are more than ready to embrace new talent - if the story moves them. With no PR playbook and no big names, just emotion, melody, and magic, 'Saiyaara' has quietly, confidently become the box office love story no one saw coming.- Ends

Aneet Padda Is Overwhelmed By Alia Bhatt's Praise For Saiyaara, Calls Her 'Hero'
Last Updated: The young actress took to Instagram to share her emotional reaction to Alia's words, calling her 'forever hero'. Aneet Padda is winning hearts with her role in Saiyaara. She was left speechless after receiving praise from none other than superstar Alia Bhatt. The young actress took to Instagram to share her emotional reaction to Alia's words, calling her 'forever hero". Taking to her Instagram stories, Aneet Padda shared Alia Bhatt's post and wrote, 'I wish I could gather every moment of inspiration, love, awe, possibility, wonder and imagination that I've experienced because of you; put it in a box and give it to you. Alia Bhatt, my hero. Forever and ever and ever." The Love And War actress had written a long post and praised the debutants. Taking to his Instagram stories, Arjun shared a post reading 'What a film'. In the background we can hear the music of Saiyaara. On Saturday, July 19, Saiyaara, recorded an overall 44.74% Hindi occupancy, indicating growing audience interest. The day began with 28.14% occupancy during morning shows, which increased significantly by the afternoon to 50.67%, and further rose in the evening with 55.40% occupancy. Backed by Yash Raj Films, Saiyaara is making waves not just for its impressive box office numbers but also for its unexpected promotional playbook. What makes Saiyaara's strong opening even more surprising is that neither Ahaan nor Aneet had any major visibility before the release. For director Mohit Suri, this could be the comeback he's been waiting for since Ek Villain, which was made on a Rs 39 crore budget and grossed Rs 155 crore worldwide. Earlier, filmmaker Mahesh had said, 'Every generation has love story that defines it. Saiyaara, to me, will be the most definitive romantic film of this generation. When I made Aashiqui, I did it with a lot of purity and I was fortunate that people connected to it deeply and made the two newcomers into overnight stars. I expect Mohit Suri to do the same with Saiyaara." With strong weekend momentum and positive word of mouth, Saiyaara is looking at a strong Sunday and a solid opening weekend total. On the work front, Alia Bhatt is currently busy with the shooting of Alpha and Love And War. First Published: July 20, 2025, 10:53 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
