SEC Media poll picks Texas Football to win conference

USA Today18-07-2025
The assembled media in Atlanta for SEC Media Days has picked Texas to win the conference in 2025. The Longhorns had more than double the votes of No. 2 Georgia in the poll. UT got 96 first place votes to the Bulldogs 44.
Participants at SEC media days voted the Longhorns to win the SEC in their second year in the league, which coincides with the first year for Arch Manning as the starting quarterback.
It's not a surprise the two opponents in last year's SEC Conference Title game are picked as the top two teams in the conference again. Last year, Texas had the best regular season record, but where beaten by UGA in the title game in Atlanta.
The prediction isn't exactly a good omen for Texas. Only 10 times since 1992 has the predicted champion at SEC Media Days gone on to win the SEC Championship Game.

IndyCar officials and Pato O'Ward shocked by ICE-related 'Speedway Slammer' post

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — IndyCar driver Pato O'Ward and series officials were shocked by a social media post from the Department of Homeland Security that touts plans for an immigration detention center in Indiana dubbed 'Speedway Slammer," and includes a car with the same number as the only Mexican driver in the series. 'It caught a lot of people off guard. Definitely caught me off guard,' O'Ward said Wednesday. 'I was just a little bit shocked at the coincidences of that and, you know, of what it means. ... I don't think it made a lot of people proud, to say the least.' The post Tuesday included an image of a IndyCar-style vehicle with the No. 5 that had 'ICE' imposed on it multiple times similar to the display of a sponsor. It appeared to be a computer-created image, with the car on a track and a prison-like building in the background. Indiana is home to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and is where the IndyCar Series is based. 'We were unaware of plans to incorporate our imagery as part of yesterday's announcement,' IndyCar said in a statement Wednesday. "Consistent with our approach to public policy and political issues, we are communicating our preference that our IP not be utilized moving forward in relation to this matter.' O'Ward said he didn't see the post until a friend texted him about it. 'I haven't really read into it too much because I don't think I want to,' he said. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in a separate post used 'SpeedwaySlammer' when announcing the new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention space by 1,000 beds. O'Ward, who is second in points in IndyCar this season, was in Texas to promote next year's inaugural Grand Prix of Arlington. That race on March 15 will be on a 2.7-mile layout that goes around the home stadiums of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and MLB's Texas Rangers. O'Ward threw a ceremonial first pitch before the Rangers' game against the New York Yankees. ___ AP auto racing:

Longhorns unveil jaw-dropping new high-tech locker room complete with reclining chairs

Back in the Tom Herman era, renovating the Texas locker room became a big story. Images of Herman taking a sledgehammer to the old lockers and the reported $8,700 dollar per locker price tag was the talk of Longhorns Nation. But it's now been eight years and the Longhorns Football program decided it was time for an update. And what an update! Instead of current Texas coach Steve Sarkisian destroying the old lockers, they were put up for auction in May, clearing the way for the renovation to begin. Each new locker has its own reclining chair. There are smartly appointed drawers for shoes and a cabinet for personal belongings. The lockers are custom decorated for each player. The players name and number face out into the room and each player's picture and name are on the inside. There are also cabinets and cubbies for the pads and helmets. The carpet in the new locker room is black with a wide burnt orange border and "Texas Longhorns" in burnt orange block lettering. Each row of lockers has a big screen TV at the end for players to gather around. There are also SEC, Longhorns and Nike logos etched above the lockers. Somewhere, maybe even Tom Herman is proud.
