Russian, Belarusian Embassies Mark Victory Day in Cairo
In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, the Russian and Belarusian embassies in Cairo, in collaboration with the Cultural Development Fund, hosted a screening of the iconic Russian film "Come and See", directed by Elem Klimov.
The screening took place at the Hanager Cinema in the Opera House complex, marking a poignant moment in the celebration of the historic day.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including Russian Ambassador Georgiy Borisienko, Belarusian Ambassador Sergey Terentiev, Russian Embassy Minister-Counselor Yuri Matveev, and Dr. Ibrahim Kamel, President of the Egyptian-Russian Friendship Association.
Also present were Ambassador Ezzat Saad, former Egyptian Ambassador to Moscow and Vice President of the Friendship Association, Asya Torchiva, Cultural Counselor at the Russian Embassy, Arseniy Matyushenko, Acting Director of Russian Cultural Centres in Egypt, and Sherif Gad, President of the Egyptian Alumni Association for Russian and Soviet Universities.
During the event, Ambassador Borisienko emphasized the significance of the celebrations, stating that the Victory Day commemoration holds even greater meaning when carried out in collaboration with Egyptian friends.
He expressed gratitude to the Egyptian Ministry of Culture for hosting the event and highlighted the historical bond between Russia and Egypt, united in their fight against fascism during World War II.
Belarusian Ambassador Sergey Terentiev explained that "Come and See", a film produced 40 years ago, was chosen for its unflinching portrayal of the brutalities of fascism and the suffering endured by the Belarusian people.
He noted that one in every three Belarusians perished during the war, underlining the intense impact of these events on the nation. Terentiev emphasized the importance of remembering these hardships, as it is essential for current generations to understand the immense pain faced by their ancestors in the pursuit of peace.
The event also featured an exhibition of World War II posters, providing a visual glimpse into the harrowing realities of the war and further enhancing the day's reflections.

Russia insists on achieving Ukraine goals despite Trump's ultimatum: Kremlin
Russia is open to peace with Ukraine but achieving its goals remains a priority, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Sunday, days after US President Donald Trump gave Moscow a 50-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire or face tougher sanctions. Peskov and other Russian officials have repeatedly rejected accusations from Kyiv and its Western partners of stalling peace talks. Meanwhile, Moscow continues to intensify its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities, launching more drones in a single night than it did during some entire months in 2024, and analysts say the barrages are likely to escalate. 'President (Vladimir) Putin has repeatedly spoken of his desire to bring the Ukrainian settlement to a peaceful conclusion as soon as possible. This is a long process, it requires effort, and it is not easy,' Peskov told state TV reporter Pavel Zarubin. 'The main thing for us is to achieve our goals. Our goals are clear,' he added. The Kremlin has insisted that any peace deal should see Ukraine withdraw from the four regions that Russia illegally annexed in September 2022, but never fully captured. It also wants Ukraine to renounce its bid to join NATO and accept strict limits on its armed forces, demands Kyiv and its Western allies have rejected. In his nightly address Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his officials have proposed a new round of peace talks this week. Russian state media on Sunday reported that no date has yet been set for the negotiations, but said Istanbul would likely remain the host city. Trump tells Moscow to choose between truce and sanctions Trump threatened Russia on July 14 with steep tariffs and announced a rejuvenated pipeline for American weapons to reach Ukraine, hardening his stance toward Moscow after months of frustration following unsuccessful negotiations aimed at ending the war. The direct Russia-Ukraine negotiations in Istanbul resulted in several rounds of prisoner exchanges but little else. Trump said he would implement 'severe tariffs' unless a peace deal is reached within 50 days. He provided few details on how they would be implemented, but suggested they would target Russia's trading partners in an effort to isolate Moscow in the global economy. In addition, Trump said European allies would buy 'billions and billions' of dollars of US military equipment to be transferred to Ukraine, replenishing the besieged country's supplies of weapons. Included in the plan are Patriot air defense systems, a top priority for Ukraine as it fends off Russian drones and missiles. Doubts were recently raised about Trump's commitment to supply Ukraine when the Pentagon paused shipments over concerns that US stockpiles were running low. Russia and Ukraine trade further drone strikes Elsewhere, Ukraine's air force said it shot down 18 of 57 Shahed-type and decoy drones launched by Russia overnight into Sunday, with 7 more disappearing from radar. Two women were injured in Zaporizhzhia, a southern Ukrainian region partly occupied by Russia, when a drone struck their house, according to the regional military administration. Two more civilians were injured in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv province, after a drone slammed into a residential building, local Ukrainian officials said. Later Sunday, drones struck a leafy square in the center of Sumy, wounding a woman and her 7-year-old son, officials said. The strike also damaged a power line, leaving some 100 households without electricity, according to Serhii Krivosheienko of the municipal military administration. Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces overnight shot down 93 Ukrainian drones targeting Russian territory, including at least 15 that appeared to head for Moscow. Ten more drones were downed on the approach to the capital Sunday, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. Egypt to run special train for Sudanese voluntarily returning home - Foreign Affairs
Egypt's national railway announced on Monday that it will operate a designated train to facilitate the voluntary return of Sudanese nationals and their families to their homeland. The move comes 'within the … cooperation and close fraternal relations' between Egypt and Sudan, the Egyptian National Railways Authority said in a statement on Sunday. Train number 1940, a third-class air-conditioned service, will depart Cairo at 11:00 AM on Monday and arrive in Aswan at 11:00 PM. From Aswan, the Sudanese will continue their journey to Sudan via the High Dam Port, a Nile access to the neighbouring nation. Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir has instructed railway officials to provide all necessary services to ensure the comfort and safe arrival of the Sudanese passengers, the statement added. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has reported a rise in voluntary returns of displaced Sudanese from neighbouring countries since January 2025, citing an improved security situation in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. Egypt, a haven for refugees fleeing conflicts besetting various neighbouring nations in recent years, currently accommodates the largest share of Sudanese who have fled their country since the outbreak of intense conflict. Sudan has been embroiled in a devastating conflict that erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This nearly two-year war has plunged the nation into what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The UN estimates that approximately 13 million people have been displaced either internally or externally, with over 3.5 million seeking refuge in neighbouring countries, including Egypt, Chad, and South Sudan. The recent influx of Sudanese refugees has significantly augmented the existing Sudanese population in Egypt. Government officials recently estimated the total number of Sudanese residing in the country at 5.5 million. According to a recent statement from Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), the country hosts an estimated nine million refugees in total, including four million from Sudan. In recent months, this influx has ignited a public debate within Egypt regarding the unprecedented pressure it places on the nation's public services and infrastructure. Egypt's PM Meets German Minister to Discuss Development Cooperation
H-Tayea Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a meeting on Sunday with Reem Alabali-Radovan, the newly appointed Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany. The meeting took place in New Alamein City and was attended by Minister of Planning and Economic Development Dr. Rania Al-Mashat and Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty.
