Smoke – Season 1 Episode 5 Recap & Review
Episode 5 of Smoke begins with Gudsen about to head out on his Arson Conference. Captain Burke shows up to see Englehart though, waking Gudsen up where he's currently dozing on the sofa.
Burke certainly backs Calderone's credentials though, calling himself a 'loyal soldier to the department'. It soon becomes clear that this visit was actually a clever ruse to find information on Gudsen's old partner, Ezra Esposito.
With the information in hand, he rings Calderone and lets her know the address. This gives her a solid lead but before she leaves, Emmett pops up, asking about his stepdad.
Given he's read Gudsen's novel, he questions whether Michelle is sleeping with him. She's pretty disgusted with the implication, but interestingly, Emmett has the draft of the book and sends it over to her. Thankfully there's an audio version but given his prose, I doubt anybody is going to buy this one on Audible!
Gudsen is unaware of all this as he heads to his conference, leaving Michelle to catch up with Ezra. Apparently Gudsen set up Ezra and got him fired because he got too close to the truth. 'I know he's an arsonist and you know it too,' He says.
Ezra explains that it's suspicious Gudsen is always at the scene of the crime first and has an uncanny ability to find an inch long incendiary device – literally a needle in a haystack – 17 times at different arson spots. Realizing his jig was almost up, Gudsen got rid of him.
Meanwhile, Freddie shows up at work and finds there's a new manager, Dev. He begins spiralling, unhappy that he's not been given the same opportunity and prepping for a big fire that night.
Speaking of unhappiness, over at the conference Gudsen's usual fire stunt doesn't go to plan. One of the officers questions Gudsen's methods and embarrasses him in front of everyone. Gudsen grins it off and instead focuses on Reba, a charismatic middle-aged woman at the bar.
Naturally, the pair end up in bed together, vibing over the idea of drifting through life and pretending everything is fine.
Unfortunately, Gudsen has a little trouble 'standing to attention' and Reba calls Gudsen out for it. He's still hung up over the presentation and she can sense this. It's also here where we learn that Reba is his ex-wife, and she knows how fragile his ego really is.
After a night of drinking, Eztra invites Michelle over to his and shows her a video of his 'initiation' with Gudsen. The video is pretty unsettling, depicting Ezra setting fire outside a caravan. Despite being told the place was empty, the caravan had dogs inside.
That's not the only arson incident we see this week though. Freddie is back on the hunt, but this time there's a problem. He winds up bursting the jug, spilling liquid everywhere in the park before clumsily getting another jug.
Freddie's target happens to be a white couple's place over in Crawford, where he shows up and sets light to their house using six jugs. Englehart phones Gudsen and demands he get on this. Checking out the report online, Gudsen grins and realizes that their arsonist has stepped it up a gear. He realizes that this MO means it was personal for him.
In the morning, Michelle leaves after making sure Ezra is okay. Ezra explains that okay is relative, given his whole life is a mess. This interaction though is a nice way of showing where Michelle's life could go if she lets Gudsen get inside her head.
Calderone continues to suffer through Gudsen's book, perking up when she hears crucial intel regarding the electrical fires.
We then cut back to Gudsen, who goes full-on karaoke mode as he heads back into town in his car. However, he doesn't watch the road and winds up smashing into the side of another car. They don't look in a particularly good way, and the episode ends with everything hanging in the balance.
The Episode Review
As we hit the halfway point of this series, Michelle Calderone is starting to understand Gudsen is their arsonist. Seeing more context around Ezra and why he's no longer working at the station is a nice inclusion, and it helps to explain what happened to him and why he's not around now.
The incident at the conference is a smart inclusion of showing precisely what sort of guy Gudsen is. It's clear that he doesn't respect anybody around him -especially women – and his ego is super fragile. Of course, the show couldn't help but throw in Hollywood's favourite mantra of 'white and pale is stale'. It's not subtle.
So far this has very much been a slow burn thriller, and fizzled out a bit after a pretty explosive couple of episodes to start things off. It really does feel like the proverbial deep breath before we plunge into darker waters, and for Apple's sake, lets hope things pick up in the episodes ahead.

Woman shot by Son of Sam receives chilling message from notorious serial killer during trip to library
A woman who was shot by the infamous 'Son of Sam' killer David Berkowitz was confronted by a friend of the killer earlier this week who delivered an eerie message. Wendy Savino had been inside the Valley Cottage Library in Long Island, on Wednesday when she was approached by Frank DeGennaro. The 88-year-old told The New York Post that DeGennaro approached her outside the building, claiming he told her 'David wants to talk to you'. She said: 'So I try to walk around him and he says, "you're Wendy Savino, aren't you?".' The man added: 'Well, I just want you to know David is very upset about what happened to you. David wants to talk to you. David wants you to know he didn't do it'. Following the strange comment, she asked DeGennaro to write down his name, her and her son Jason then took it to Clarkstown Police Department to file a report. She added: 'He had me backed into a corner. He's just talking and talking about the same thing, "David's a really good person".' DeGennaro told the outlet that he was called by the police but not charged, adding that he never intended to scare Savino. He said: 'I didn't corner her. I didn't stand in her way', adding that he became friends with Berkowitz after exchanging letters with the killer who remains behind bars. 'I realize now that it was probably the wrong thing to do, to even talk to her. This is getting blown out of proportion', he added. Savino was shot several times by Berkowitz - who admitted to killing six people - in her car on April 9, 1976. It was later determined that Savino was the first victim of Berkowitz in a series of violent murders that crippled the New York City. For 13 months from July 1976 to July 1977, the 'Son of Sam' carried out a killing rampage that claimed the lives of six and left seven other victims wounded. Armed with a Bulldog revolver, he hunted in the shadows, targeting mostly young couples in cars and on lovers' lanes across Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. When he earned the nickname the .44 caliber killer in the press, the notorious murderer coined his own chilling moniker - the Son of Sam - in a letter taunting the police captain on his tail. The killer claimed that he was driven to kill by a 6,000-year-old demon named Sam which spoke to him through his neighbor's dog. The Son of Sam shootings took over the city's consciousness and filled pages and pages of the daily papers. Young women - noting a pattern of brown-haired victims - began dying theirs blonde or wearing wigs. Other New Yorkers avoided going out altogether. Then finally, on August 10, 1977, the Son of Sam - a 24-year-old postal worker from Yonkers by the name of David Berkowitz - was captured. Berkowitz was sentenced in 1978 to the maximum prison term of 25 years to life for each of the six slayings. He first became eligible for parole in 2002. He has since expressed remorse and said he is a born-again Christian. He is being held at Shawangunk Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in New York. Speaking with the Daily Mail last month, Berkowitz said t hat he was 'thankful to be alive, and by the grace of God do good things today with my life today.' 'The past could never be undone. I wish it could, but it's not possible. So I just have to keep moving forward,' he said. 'I am also grateful for the friends I have in my life today. These are good law abiding individuals who love me for who I am today, not for who I was in the past when a [sic] let the devil rule my mind.' But, despite the apparent regret for his crimes, the Berkowitz suggested that he was simply a passive pawn being 'used' to do the devil's bidding.

Sickening moment cop launches heinous attack on adorable animal... before vile threat to his colleague
A New Mexico police officer laughed as he fatally injured a tiny baby rabbit by throwing it at his vehicle, after threatening his colleague with a TASER. Grant County Sheriff's Deputy Alejandro Gomez, 27, was caught in cellphone video from August of last year horrifically injuring the animal. In the clip, Gomez can be seen demanding that an unnamed deputy hand over the animal that was found outside the town of Hachita, near the Mexican border. The deputy who found the small critter was holding the animal close, saying that he thought Gomez would kill it. Gomez swears on his kids he won't kill the animal. He only hands it over after Gomez threatens him with a stun gun, telling him: 'Give it to me right now'. Now holding the animal, Gomez then throws it against the side of their vehicle while smiling as fellow officers laugh. According to the Albuquerque Journal, the other deputy later told New Mexico State Police that the animal was fatally injured and had to be killed so 'it would not suffer'. Gomez has been placed on leave and is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon upon a peace officer and one count of extreme cruelty to animals. The Grant County Sheriff's Office said that he would remain on leave until the case was resolved. State Police, who are probing the incident, said the sergeant and corporal who witnessed the cruelty 'failed to intervene as required by New Mexico Statute'. Neither of the two have been placed on leave and both are still employed at the office, the journal reported. Gomez's attorney Gary Mitchell told the outlet: 'We don't think he did anything wrong, obviously. 'We're waiting to see what evidence the state has. But it sounds like an inner-office situation that should not have turned into a criminal case.' An arrest affidavit says the group of officers stopped in the road after spotting the rabbit in the middle of the road. The deputy seen reluctantly handing over the animal said that he 'believed that if he just set the animal loose, Deputy Gomez would be able to pick it up and hurt it'. It added: 'Deputy Gomez threw the animal with such force that it fatally wounded the animal. A huge thud was heard as it struck the side of the patrol vehicle.' The deputy reported the incident and the Grant County Sheriff's Office conducted their own probe. The affidavit said that the internal investigation resulted in 'little or no action being taken against the deputies or supervisors involved'. It is also claimed that Gomez and the deputy had a run in days before the incident, after Gomez pointed his Taser at the deputy after having stole the deputy's phone. A few hour after the rabbit incident it is alleged that Gomez pointed his gun at the deputy behind his back and said he was 'only testing his duty-mounted light', it adds. The clip has surfaced on social media, sparking widespread outrage over Gomez's behavior. One person said: 'That's so inhumane and these are the people that are supposed to be protecting our community.'
