GHMC rolls out special monsoon drive to tackle host of civic woes
A special monsoon drive is being held across all 150 wards from July 29 to August 8. According to GHMC, the initiative will involve intensive sanitation from 5.30 am to 1.30 pm, covering 15 wards each day, in addition to regular sanitation activities.
The drive focus on clearing garbage vulnerable points (GVPs), removing construction and demolition (C&D) waste, municipal solid waste (MSW), green waste and silt from recent rains.
On Tuesday, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan conducted a field inspection in several areas of Charminar and LB Nagar zones.
As part of this drive, sanitation workers removed the garbage accumulated on roads, colonies and public places. Steps were taken to clean the sewers and prevent water from stagnating. Entomology wing officials carried out fogging and anti-larvae operations to prevent mosquito infestation.
Karnan urged everyone to prioritize sanitation. He called on the public to refrain from littering the streets and instead dispose of waste in designated dustbins.
The commissioner said, 'As many as 18,500 sanitation workers, 2,500 mosquito control personnel, supervisors and assistant entomologists and senior GHMC officials were deployed. Also, each zone has been allocated Rs 5 crore to carry out the drive effectively,' said Karnan.
He emphasized that garbage should be given to the Swachh autos that visit homes, explaining that maintaining a clean environment can help prevent the spread of diseases. Local public representatives and members of colony welfare associations are also encouraged to join this initiative, offering their assistance and taking responsibility for enhancing the cleanliness of the community.
Following the field inspection, the Commissioner instructed the officials on the necessary actions to successfully implement the drive.
Given that diseases are prone to spread during the current monsoon season, it is essential for everyone to work together to enhance the effectiveness of this sanitation drive.
He instructed the Additional Commissioners to ensure that sufficient vehicles are arranged through the plant agency, enabling the swift removal of C&D waste. Additionally, he directed to take appropriate action in accordance with the regulations against those who fail to prepare the required vehicles.
He was accompanied by LB Nagar Zonal Commissioner Hemant Keshav Patil and other senior officials.
Later, Karnan, along with Charminar MLA Zulfiqar Ali, MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig, Corporators Mohammad Mustafa Ali, Syed Sohail Qadri and Charminar Zonal Commissioner Venkanna, visited the Charminar and its surroundings.
The Commissioner directed the officials to expedite the completion of civic amenities and development projects, ensuring that the unique character of this historically significant area is maintained.

6 PHED engrs served notice over 150 crore tubewell scam in Jalore
Jaipur: Public health engineering department (PHED) has issued notices to six engineers of the department, including a retired engineer, for alleged involvement in a scam of Rs 150 crore. Officials said these engineers reportedly gave Operations and Maintenance (O&M) tenders to two firms for more than 900 tubewells in Jalore district when they were entitled to O&M of only 20 tubewells. "We took up the issue with PHED minister Kanhaiya Lal Choudhary. Following his instructions, we are going to take major steps against these accused engineers. We will also lodge complaints with police in this regard," disclosed a senior PHED official Wednesday. An official of the department claimed that the accused—then executive engineers Umesh Kumar Meena, Shyam Bihari Bairwa, Jitendra Trivedi, Hemant Kumar Bairwa, Ashish Dwivedi (retd), and Hemant Kumar Vaishnav—gave the work orders for O&M of 981 tubewells on Aug 12, 2022, to two firms—MM Construction and MS Raj Enterprise. "In gross violation of norms, the then superintendent engineer of the circle issued this work order for 981 tubewells. The two firms should have got work orders for only 20 tubewells. For the last three years, the department is unnecessarily wasting money on O&M expenditure for such a huge number of additional tubewells. The department has also blacklisted the two firms," the official added. Investigation revealed that PHED bore O&M expenditure for around 3,500 tubewells in Jalore for the last three years, when the actual number of tubewells of the department in the district was only close to 1,500.

Narayana Health to add 2,000 beds, expand insurance schemes in FY26
Bengaluru-headquartered hospital chain Narayana Health aims to grow its domestic revenue by 10 per cent in FY26, in line with industry benchmarks, a senior company official said. Managing director and chief executive officer Emmanuel Rupert told Business Standard: 'Last fiscal we did about Rs 4,349 crore in India revenue and we want to grow at a rate at which the healthcare industry is growing — over 10 per cent. We look to be on the same momentum and revenue.' Sandhya J, chief financial officer at Devi Shetty's Narayana Health, said the company plans to scale up its Aditi and Arya health insurance schemes in Karnataka and West Bengal. 'The entire healthcare ecosystem is failing in trust. We are on the path to solve the trust deficit and episodic interference of fund transfer. On the back of this, we aim to double down on our insurance scheme and build a strong customer base in Bengaluru, Shivamogga, Mysore, and Kolkata.' Commenting on efforts to improve profit after tax (PAT), which declined 2.3 per cent to Rs 196 crore in Q1 due to increased investments in integrated care and other financial costs, Sandhya said PAT optimisation will improve as the India business grows. Some clinics have started breaking even, reducing losses from the health insurance schemes. 'Over a period of time, we will be able to keep the losses in check and expand margins in the domestic business. PAT should improve. Finance cost will continue to increase due to the Rs 3,000 crore project to add 2,000 beds across India over the next three years. The integrated care dilution will continue over the next year but we hope to maintain a decent level of cash burn.' She added that a large part of the funding will come through bank borrowings and non-convertible debentures (NCDs) as needed. So far, Rs 800 crore has been raised for projects already signed. The CFO noted that about Rs 1,500–2,000 crore in loans might be raised in this fiscal, depending on upcoming project developments. 'We are exploring opportunities to expand, some might be inorganic as well. Borrowings will be linked to the construction progress of our current projects.' During the quarter, revenue from international patients declined, primarily due to reduced footfall from Bangladesh. Narayana expects this trend to continue, given ongoing geopolitical tensions. 'The goal is to keep focusing on domestic growth and see how well we can push the numbers. Eventually, in the next two to three years, we believe that revenue contribution from Bangladesh will go down to zero. Not to miss, the country is building its own healthcare infrastructure.' Looking ahead, Narayana expects its integrated care business to account for a larger share of overall revenue. At present, cardiac sciences and oncology contribute approximately 33 per cent and 16 per cent, respectively. On Tuesday, the Clinical Research team and Medha AI developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model that predicts left ventricular ejection fraction from ECG images, enabling early heart failure detection and improved diagnostic access. 'All along we have waited for Western countries to develop these technologies. Today we are developing this because this country is blessed with phenomenally skilled, passionate software engineers and AI experts. This is our strength. We have made massive investments in building the digital platform, which is far ahead of all the other hospitals. With the great combination of a digital platform and the AI tool, healthcare will never be the same,' said Devi Prasad Shetty, chairman and founder of Narayana Health, at a media briefing. The company said that trained on over 100,000 ECG images paired with echocardiogram reports, the model showed strong predictive performance. With external validation across 14 tertiary centres and over 57,000 patients, it identified 97 per cent of individuals with severely reduced ejection fraction (≤35 per cent).

Under NQAS, more than 130 health institutions in Bastar get certification
Raipur: Over 130 health institutions across Chhattisgarh's Bastar division have been certified under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) between Jan 2024 and June 2025. The certified facilities include one district hospital, 16 primary health centres (PHCs), and 113 sub-health centres (SHCs), with 14 institutions located in the sensitive districts of Kanker, Bijapur, Sukma, and Dantewada, getting certified. State has ramped up enrolment under 'Niyad Nellanar' scheme, accelerating the issuance of Ayushman cards to ensure health access for economically weaker sections. In the past year alone, over 36,000 Ayushman cards have been created, covering 52.6% of eligible population, an official statement from govt stated. More than Rs 8.22 crore in health assistance has been extended to 6,816 beneficiaries across the division, it said. Speaking on the progress, CM Vishnu Deo Sai said, "This transformation wouldn't be possible without the active involvement of mitanins, health workers, and the health department staff. Bastar has always been a priority for our govt. We are committed to improving it further."
