Department denies sangoma learner was expelled

The Citizen05-05-2025

THE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education (DoE) has firmly denied claims that a Grade Nine learner from Sidelile High School was expelled due to her sangoma or spiritual calling.

This follows widespread reports on social media and in the media alleging that the unnamed female learner was removed from the school by the principal after she assisted a fellow learner experiencing distress linked to an ancestral calling on school grounds. DoE spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said the learner was admitted into the school last year and she successfully progressed to Grade Nine.
'At the time of admission, the learner's mother disclosed to the admissions committee that her child possesses a spiritual gift that requires her to wear specific traditional headgear as part of her calling. This request was duly accommodated by the school in line with its commitment to respecting cultural and religious diversity. However, it was clearly communicated and mutually agreed that no ancestral or spiritual practices would be performed on school premises,' said Mahlambi.
The learner's mother then presented her with a choice to either continue her education while adhering to school policies or to pursue her spiritual calling outside of school. According to the department, the learner chose to continue with her education. In violation of the agreement, Mahlambi said there have been multiple incidents where the learner conducted practices related to her spiritual calling on school grounds, including recruiting fellow learners for sangoma initiation.
'Such actions are not permitted as they may infringe on the rights of other learners and staff. Contrary to reports in the media, these incidents did not result in the learner's expulsion or suspension. A disciplinary meeting was convened with the learner and her parents. During this meeting, it was reiterated that sangoma practices are strictly prohibited on school premises,' he said.
According to Section 9(2) of the South African Schools Act, only the head of the department, Nkosinathi Ngcobo, has the legal authority to expel a learner from a public school. Ngcobo said the child's parents need to ensure that she returns to school without further delay, as her absence has not been formally reported and may jeopardise her academic progress.
'As a department, we appeal to the learner to return and resume her studies to catch up on the curriculum before sitting for the May/June assessments,' said Ngcobo.

Open communication to boost Berea SAPS crime-fighting efforts

KEEPING the lines of communication open is the key to combating crime in the Berea area. This was emphasised by Berea SAPS and Ward 31 councillor Remona Mckenzie following a community meeting at Durban High School recently. The Berea SAPS crime imbizo was attended by members of the community, Metro Police, Berea Community Police Forum and other crime-fighting structures. Berea SAPS spokesperson, Captain Poobalan Naidoo, said the aim of the meeting was to appraise the community about the station's crime fighting efforts. He said the community was addressed by the station commander, Colonel Hlengiwe Happiness Gcabashe, and other relevant roleplayers who assist in dealing with crime in the Berea policing precinct. 'The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the needs of the community and to find solutions,' said Naidoo who hailed the meeting a success. 'All relevant issues were discussed and solutions were found to address problems and crime that are being experienced in the area. The community was also informed that the withdrawing of cases by complainants will only be done in court,' said Naidoo. He added that the community was happy with how the station commander dealt with issues, and she encouraged the community to participate in the next imbizo in July. Aslo Read: Berea SAPS cracks down on crime Mckenzie expressed the same sentiment, 'Opening dialogue between police and the community strengthens relationships and encourages co-operation. 'These discussions help prioritise policing efforts based on community needs. SAPS public meetings are essential for fostering transparency, accountability, and community engagement in policing. This meeting provided updates on crime trends, safety measures, and strategies to combat criminal activities. We also advised the community of the importance of their involvement,' said Mckenzie. She encouraged the community to become more involved in crime-fighting and participate in public meetings to make their voices heard. 'It's important that the community attend these meetings; communities can actively shape local policing strategies and create safer neighbourhoods. SAPS use these meetings to report on their activities, ensuring they remain answerable or accountable to the public. The community must voice their concerns, suggest solutions, and collaborate with law enforcement to improve safety. The collaborative efforts within Ward 31 remain crucial in enhancing police visibility and fostering a safer environment for all residents,' said Mckenzie. Israel intercepts Greta Thunberg's aid vessel bound for Gaza

Greta Thunberg's humanitarian mission to Gaza has been intercepted by the Israeli Defence Force as they boarded the vesse. Image: Instagram Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been confirmed "safe and in good spirits" by Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), after the yacht she was aboard was intercepted in waters near Gaza. The vessel, part of the 'Freedom flotilla', was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip when it was intercepted by Israeli forces. The 22-year-old had posted a pre-recorded video to Instagram from the deck of the 'Madleen', describing how they had been "intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel'. She called on her followers and the Swedish government to put pressure on authorities to secure her and the others' release. According to Israel's foreign ministry, the vessel carried 12 activists, described as 'celebrities', and a 'tiny amount of aid'. In a statement, the MFA commented: 'While Greta and others attempted to stage a media provocation whose sole purpose was to gain publicity and included less than a single truckload of aid.' 'There are ways to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip they do not involve Instagram selfies,' the ministry added. The activists are expected to be deported shortly. Ahead of the interception, footage posted to social media platform X showed members of the flotilla crew scrambling to take cover as drones flew overhead. Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, who was also on board, claimed their communications and tracking systems were being jammed approximately 160 nautical miles from Gaza. He was heard warning others to 'get into position' and urging Thunberg to take cover. Ávila later alleged the vessel was attacked and sprayed with an unknown substance. In a subsequent press release, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said the 'Madleen' was 'attacked and forcibly intercepted by the Israeli military at 3:02am CET in international waters'. The coalition claimed the ship's unarmed crew were abducted and that supplies including baby formula, food and medical items were seized. Earlier reports indicated that nearby vessels had raised concerns among the 'Madleen' crew, prompting an alert. The flotilla had aimed to reach Gaza's territorial waters by Sunday, despite a long-standing Israeli naval blockade. Hollywood star Jared Leto under fire for misconduct allegations

Hollywood actor Jared Leto, known for his roles in films like House of Gucci and Suicide Squad , now finds himself at the centre of serious allegations. Nine women have come forward accusing the 53-year-old star of predatory and inappropriate behaviour. Some are even claiming the incidents occurred when they were minors. The controversy reignited recently after Los Angeles DJ Allie Teilz shared a decade-old Facebook post on Instagram. She alleged that Leto tried to force himself on her backstage when she was just 17. 'He knew my age and didn't care,' Teilz said. 'What he did was predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.' She described the encounter vividly: 'You're not really in L.A. until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you… in a kilt and a snow hat'. Model Laura La Rue also spoke out, recounting an unsettling experience from 2008 when she was 16. She said Leto asked her age and, despite knowing she was underage, asked for her phone number, according to People. La Rue recalled visiting his Los Angeles home in 2009, where he allegedly flirted and teased her. She also claimed that when she was 17, Jared Leto once walked out of a room completely naked. 'I thought maybe that's just what grown men did,' she said. Another woman described a disturbing incident where Leto, during a visit to his home, exposed himself and masturbated in front of her after she turned 18. He reportedly grabbed her hand and asked her to spit on him. The woman also said their relationship began with flirty texts while she was still underage. Leto's representatives have strongly denied all allegations. A spokesperson said the communications with La Rue 'contain nothing sexual or inappropriate' and claimed she later applied to be Leto's assistant, which La Rue denies. Regarding Teilz's accusations, the rep called them 'demonstrably false.' The actor himself has yet to comment publicly on the matter. One anonymous accuser told Air Mail , 'It's been an open secret for a long time.' The flood of claims against Jared Leto underscores the need for deeper scrutiny and justice in Hollywood and beyond. As this story develops, it will be crucial to watch how the actor responds and what legal or industry actions follow. Meanwhile, the voices of these women demand attention and respect, urging a culture of transparency and safety for all. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
