The 2020 novel was about Lucy and Sam, newly orphaned children of immigrants who are suddenly alone in a land that refutes their existence. Fleeing the threats of their western mining town, they set off to bury their father in the only way that will set them free from their past. Along the way, they encounter giant buffalo bones, tiger paw prints, and the specters of a ravaged landscape as well as family secrets, sibling rivalry and glimpses of a different kind of future.

See Pixar's 'Elio' triumph over camp bullies in exclusive deleted scene
The world has been robbed of an epic scene where Pixar's 11-year-old 'Elio' goes full beast mode at Camp Carver − dodging pine-cone projectiles and pounding pickle juice. Until now. The scene, called "Carver Legend," appears here and in the Aug. 19 digital release of "Elio." The full animated scene, deleted before the film's theatrical release, features the clone of young hero Elio Solis (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) flying through a grueling obstacle course. "The scene is very moody and rich, the animation is hilarious," says Madeline Sharafian, who directed "Elio" with Domee Shi and Adrian Molina, when introducing the clip. "Elio" follows an extraterrestrial-obsessed orphan who is mistakenly identified as Earth's ambassador after being beamed into an alien realm called the Communiverse. As Elio navigates intergalactic diplomacy and befriends aliens such the decapod-like Glordon (Remy Edgerly), he confronts a looming cosmic crisis brought on by Glordon's aggressive father Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett). What's in the deleted 'Elio' scene? While abducted Elio is exploring the galaxy, the Communiverse sends a clone to stand in for the young earthling. In an early version the movie, Elio is at sleepaway camp when he's alien-napped, so Clone Elio took his place at Camp Carver. Bullies subject the "new kid" Elio to the Camp Carver newbie tradition of running the insidious gauntlet. To everyone's shock, Clone Elio sails through the challenges using his alien power. He chugs a family-size jar of pickle juice and flies through a ropes course as campers throw the sharpest pine cones at him. When one camper shoots a boxing glove-tipped arrow, Clone Elio snares the weapon and uses it to scare off the waiting gladiator − the gauntlet's final challenge. The entire group chants the name of the triumphant Elio and Clone Elio accepts the applause. Why was 'Carver Legend' cut from Elio? However great the scene, the "Elio" story changed during production. The filmmakers decided to have Elio at home with his guardian, Aunt Olga (voiced by Zoe Saldaña), "to focus on their relationship," according to producer Mary Alice Drumm. "It felt stronger to have Clone Elio try to impress Olga with good behavior, but to have Olga realize there was something off," Drumm tells USA TODAY. "This wasn't the nephew she loved and knew so well." When is the 'Elio' digital release? Disney and Pixar's "Elio" will be released Tuesday, Aug. 19, on digital platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. The film is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on Sept. 9.

Weapons actress Amy Madigan is currently courting Oscar buzz for her role as Aunt Gladys in the breakout horror hit, but she's also addressing an Academy Awards controversy she was present for nearly three decades ago. Following an introduction by Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese at the 1999 Oscars, stars like Warren Beatty and Kathy Bates were shown standing to applaud On the Waterfront director Elia Kazan's acceptance of an Honorary Award from inside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. However, a shot from the live broadcast showed Madigan and her husband, actor Ed Harris, looking stone-faced as they watched Kazan accept his statuette in the room. "Yeah, there was no way we were going to do that. No way," Madigan, 74, said during a recent interview with the New York Times, though the quote was not included in the final piece, and instead posted to social media by journalist Kyle Buchanan. Madigan touched on Kazan's House Un-American Activities Committee testimony in 1952 amid the blacklisting of Hollywood figures suspected of being communists during the Red Scare. "My father, who's not with us anymore, he was a political analyst and a journalist and he was working on Capitol Hill when McCarthyism was going on and it really, really affected him deeply," Madigan continued. "And yeah, that whole thing was really bringing it back to me. I was like, 'Nope.'" Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Madigan and Harris for additional comment. Kazan became a pariah in some Hollywood circles following his HUAC testimony, during which he named eight people who'd participated in Communist Party activities alongside him. In a 1997 interview with the Times, Kazan reflected on pushback he received over the years. "You want to know the truth? Not one bit," he said when asked if he was bothered by the anger against him nearly five decades after his HUAC testimony. "I've had so much praise in my life. Some of it deserved, some of it not deserved. What does it matter?'' Kazan continued, ''That whole time wasn't very nice. People were really hurt by what went on. I was part of it, I suppose. I spoke my mind and I had a right to do it.'' Though Kazan died in 2003 at 94, his Hollywood legacy lives on through his son, Matilda and Bicentennial Man writer Nicholas Kazan, and his actress granddaughters Maya (The Knick) and Zoe Kazan (Olive Kitteridge). In a recent interview with EW, Madigan additionally reflected on her Weapons success. Writer-director Zach Cregger's horror hit has earned $150 million at the global box office after only 10 days in release. "It's not that I discount it, but in this business, nothing's real till it's real," she said about the thought of returning for a sequel, comparing the buzz to chatter about her potential Oscar nod for the film. "I just had such a great time working with Zach and being inside that brain of his. That's really the gift of how the movie came out. The other stuff has to do with all sorts of conversations that I would never be privy in and business things like that. But, you know, I love Gladys, so I'll leave it at that." ‘Black Swan' director tried to start a feud between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis
'Black Swan' director Darren Aronofsky confessed that he tried to cause tension between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis during production of the 2010 twisted ballet thriller. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker, 56, spoke about how he attempted to pit the women against each other in an interview with Vogue while celebrating the flick 15 years later. 'I was trying to be a sneaky director and make them argue,' Aronofsky recalled, noting that Portman, 44, and Kunis, 42, didn't take the bait. Portman and Kunis' friendship, however, was too solid for Aronofsky's games. The Oscar-winner even suggested the 'Bad Moms' star for the role. 'We had been friends for years and I remember being at the Rose Bowl Flea Market with her, talking about this ballet movie I was making with Darren,' Portman said in the interview. 'Mila said, 'I remember when I would take off my pointe shoes…' and I was like, 'Wait, you did ballet?!' Despite their director's deception, Kunis sang his praises. 'Every journalist wanted to know how scary Darren was: 'How intense was his set? How intense was he?'' she recalled. And journalists were always so disappointed that he wasn't some tortured soul who treated us like garbage.' Portman famously played Nina, an unstable principal ballerina whose leading role is jeopardized by Kunis' character, Lily. The rivalry causes Nina's darkness to take over, and lines become blurred between reality and fantasy.
