This Week in Golf: Lottie Woad's LPGA debut and final DP World Tour event highlights
It seems to have come to that time of year, where things are being decided in the world of golf in so many areas, ultimately deciding where players compete in 2026. This week is the final event on the Closing Swing of the DP World Tour – the Danish Golf Championship. Recommended For You Leading the Swing is Scotland's Grant Forrest, winner of the recent NEXO Championship at Trump International, Aberdeen in Scotland. The leader on Sunday will receive a Swing Bonus of $200,000 plus entry to all the tournaments in the second half of the season. Next week on the DP World Tour is the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo – the final event for qualifying for the top 6 players for Team Europe for The Ryder Cup. It is also the final Individual Event for LIV Golf in Indianapolis with the usual $25 million purse for the 54 holes; these numbers are seemingly becoming the norm and now do not seem to surprise us. Next week in Michigan, the Team Event will see the LIV Golf season come to a close. It is remarkable to think that $28 million will be shared out in Bonus money in LIV Golf on Sunday in addition to the $25 million event purse, and the following week $50 million will be shared amongst the 13 teams, with $14 million to the winning team, $8 million to the runners-up and $6 million to the third team. We wonder if they are getting nervous? On the LPGA, the Standard Portland Classic field is headlined by the likes of Nelly Korda, Minjee Lee, Lottie Woad, Jeeno Thitikul and more. This is set to be a 144-player field played out over four days, with this event marking the LPGA's return to the Pacific Northwest. England's Lottie Woad will be making her LPGA professional debut; she is already number 20 in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings. Finally, there are just four remaining events on the Korn Ferry Tour. The top 75 players will compete in the Korn Ferry Championship, with four more qualifying events remaining on the calendar. Look out for our own Rayhan Thomas. Weekly Golf Schedule (14th - 17th August 2025) LIV Golf Indianapolis Venue: The Club at Chatham Hills, US Purse: $25 million Dates: Friday 15th - Sunday 17th August BMW Championship (PGA Tour) Venue: Cave Valley Golf Club, Maryland, US Purse: $20 million Dates: Thursday 14th – Sunday 17th August Albertsons Boise Open (Korn Ferry Tour) Venue: Hillcrest Country Club, Idaho, US Purse: $1 million Dates: Thursday 14th – Sunday 17th August Danish Golf Championship (DP World Tour) Venue: Fureso Golf Klub, Copenhagen, Denmark Purse: $2.75 million Dates: Thursday 14th – Sunday 17th August The Standard Portland Classic (LPGA) Venue: Columbia Edgeware Country Club, Portland, Oregon, US Purse: $2 million Dates: Thursday 14th – Sunday 17th August Highlight: Lottie Woad's LPGA pro debut Vierumaki Finnish Challenge (HotelPlanner Tour) Venue: Cooke Course, Vierumaki, Finland Purse: €300,000 Dates: Thursday 14th – Sunday 17th August

Joaquin Niemann becomes the voice of LIV Golf's fight for World Ranking Points
The divisions in golf's most contrasting viewpoints have rarely been more evident, and now Joaquin Niemann has stepped firmly into the spotlight to address these differing perspectives. The 26-year-old LIV Golf standout has been on a roll in 2025, winning nearly half of his starts and emerging as one of the game's most dominant players. Yet in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), Niemann sits at a distant No. 103, a number he believes says more about politics than his performance. Recommended For You 'I feel like the ranking system is not up to me, it's up to them,' Niemann said at last week's LIV Golf Chicago. 'I'm expecting they're going to do the right thing for golf.' In short, Niemann is saying that he trusts the golf authorities will make fair decisions that protect the integrity of the sport and ensure healthy competition, even though those choices could impact his own ranking and career. From Niemann's perspective, awarding world ranking points to LIV Golf events is important, although it has not yet led to a step towards the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Because LIV events don't currently count toward the rankings, Niemann's only ranking points this year have come from a tie for third place at an Asian Tour event and an eighth-place finish at the PGA Championship. Stark disparity The disparity is stark: five victories in 11 LIV events, yet a world ranking that keeps him well outside the sport's elite on paper. It's a gulf that frustrates many LIV players, not least because it affects eligibility for majors and other marquee events. Still, Niemann says chasing points isn't what drives him. 'It's not something I think about to tell myself in the mirror, 'Joaco, you are No. 5,'' he said. 'I'm just here to do my best, make as many birdies as possible, and make the crowd enjoy us playing golf around the world.' The individual race in LIV's inaugural 2025 season remains alive, with Jon Rahm still capable of catching Niemann over the final two events. Rahm, another high-profile figure in the OWGR debate, has suggested that format tweaks, such as adding a fourth round or introducing a cut, could help LIV's case. For now, Niemann is not lobbying for structural change; he's lobbying for recognition. With his record, he believes the argument is already made, and that the next move belongs to golf's power brokers. 'Do the right thing,' he says. 'For the good of the game.' By the Numbers: Joaquin Niemann vs. the OWGR (Same as graphic) 2025 Season (LIV & select other events) LIV Golf events played: 11 LIV Golf victories: 5 Top-5 finishes: 8 Total tournaments worldwide: 15 Worldwide wins: 5 LIV win percentage: 45% Current OWGR position: No. 103 Highest career OWGR position: No. 15 Most recent OWGR points earned: 3rd place at Asian Tour event (Feb 2025) Major performance this year: T8 at PGA Championship, MC at final two majors

Rory's Dubai return set to ignite UAE golf's global prestige and inspire a new generation
When Rory McIlroy returns to Jumeirah Golf Estates this November, it will not just be about defending his DP World Tour Championship crown; it will be a homecoming of sorts for one of golf's biggest names. As a player, McIlroy's presence in the UAE has consistently elevated the tournament, the region's golf profile, and the sport's global appeal. The Northern Irishman's return for the November 13-16 championship comes less than a year after he delivered a masterclass in control and shot-making to seal a third DP World Tour Championship victory in 2024. It was a win that also locked in a record-equalling sixth Race to Dubai title alongside the legendary Spaniard Seve Ballesteros. It was also the kind of performance that reaffirmed McIlroy's standing as one of the most decorated players in DP World Tour history. Dubai: Rory's launchpad legacy 'Dubai has always been a special place for me,' said McIlroy, who first made waves at Emirates Golf Club in 2009, when, at just 19 years old, he won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. 'Winning both the DP World Tour Championship and the Race to Dubai last year was an incredible way to finish the season. To equal Seve's record made it even more special. I've played some great golf this year, and I'm looking forward to finishing strong again in front of the fans at Jumeirah Golf Estates.' This season, McIlroy arrives not just as defending champion, but also as the reigning Masters winner, where he became the first European to achieve the career grand slam. His form has been impressive: a Green Jacket from Augusta, runner-up at the Genesis Scottish Open, a fourth-place finish at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, and a top-10 at The Open at Royal Portrush. Boost for UAE golf For UAE golf, McIlroy's presence is more than symbolic. With the sport in the region riding a wave of international recognition, from elite junior programmes to the arrival of LIV Golf events, McIlroy's participation in the DP World Tour Championship adds unmatched star power. It boosts ticket sales, draws global broadcast audiences, and reinforces Dubai's position as a must-play destination for the game's elite. McIlroy has confirmed that he will spend two weeks in the UAE, also competing in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which kicks off the DP World Tour Play-Offs. The first Rolex Series event of the year will see the top 70 available players battle for a place among the final 50 at Jumeirah Golf Estates, where the season's Race to Dubai champion will be crowned. The Earth course has been a rich hunting ground for McIlroy, who has claimed the DP World Tour Championship in 2012, 2015, and 2024, and topped the season-long standings six times, from 2012, 2014, 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2024. He now sits just two behind Colin Montgomerie's all-time Race to Dubai record and will be aiming to narrow that gap by clinching a fourth straight title in the rankings race. Golf festival comes alive For fans, the DP World Tour Championship offers more than just world-class golf. Free general admission tickets for Thursday and Friday are now available, with last year's record crowds expected to swell even further with McIlroy's presence. The vibrant championship village, trick-shot shows, family activities, and premium hospitality options promise a festival atmosphere to match the action on the course. Five reasons Rory matters to UAE golf 1. Global star power Rory McIlroy is one of the most recognisable figures in world sport. His presence draws international attention, lifting the DP World Tour Championship's profile well beyond the region. 2. Boost to UAE tourism A player of McIlroy's stature attracts not only golf fans but also visitors from around the world, giving Dubai's hotels, restaurants, and attractions a welcome surge. 3. Inspiration for regional talent From young Emirati golfers to aspiring professionals across the Middle East, seeing McIlroy in action offers an unmatched source of motivation and belief. 4. Stronger commercial pull Sponsors and broadcasters value marquee names. McIlroy's participation strengthens the tournament's commercial reach, making it more attractive for future investment in UAE golf. 5. Cementing Dubai's golf legacy
