Databases vital in combating cybercrime: Kuwait official

Arab Times26-06-2025
TUNIS, June 26: Kuwait's Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Brigadier Abdullah Al-Hassan, underscored the critical role of data systems — particularly criminal records and biometric fingerprint databases — in combating cybercrime across Arab nations.
Speaking to KUNA on Wednesday while chairing the 20th Arab Conference of Heads of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Evidence Agencies, held at the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers in Tunis, Al-Hassan emphasized the importance of building and improving regional tools to address evolving digital threats.
He noted that the conference is following up on earlier proposals aimed at strengthening Arab cooperation in the fight against cybercrime. Describing such crimes as the 'mother of all crimes,' Al-Hassan explained that cybercrime encompasses a broad range of illegal activities, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, domestic violence, and other offenses that originate through social media and the digital sphere.
In his remarks, Al-Hassan warned of the increasing risks posed by cybercrime and called for the development of a unified procedural guide and an integrated biometric fingerprint database to enhance the collective capabilities of Arab states in detecting and responding to criminal activity.
He reaffirmed the commitment of Arab criminal investigation and forensic agencies to tracking cybercrime by forming specialized, technologically advanced teams equipped to handle the challenges of the digital era. These efforts, he stressed, are essential to achieving cybersecurity and effective crime prevention across the region.
The conference, chaired by Kuwait in its current leadership of the General Secretariat, officially opened earlier Wednesday at the Council's headquarters in the Tunisian capital.

Activist boat Handala seized off Gaza brought to port of Ashdod

Activist boat Handala seized off Gaza brought to port of Ashdod Activists were on a peaceful mission to break through Zionists' illegal blockade on Gaza TEL AVIV: Zionist forces brought the pro-Palestinian activist boat Handala into the port of Ashdod on Sunday, after seizing the vessel in international waters and detaining the crew, an AFP journalist saw. Campaigners from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition had attempted to breach a Zionist naval blockade of the Palestinian territory of Gaza, but were intercepted late Saturday. The legal rights center Adalah told AFP its lawyers were in Ashdod and had been allowed to speak to 19 members of the 21-strong international crew, which included two French parliamentarians and two Al-Jazeera journalists. The remaining two of those detained were dual US and Zionist citizens and had been transferred to police custody, Adalah said. 'After 12 hours at sea, following the unlawful interception of the Handala, Zionist authorities confirmed the vessel's arrival at Ashdod port,' said the group, set up to campaign for the rights of Zionist entity's Arab population. 'Adalah reiterates that the activists aboard the Handala were part of a peaceful civilian mission to break through Zionist entity's illegal blockade on Gaza. The vessel was intercepted in international waters and their detention constitutes a clear violation of international law.' Earlier, the Zionist foreign ministry said the navy stopped the Handala to prevent it from entering the coastal waters off the territory of Gaza. 'The vessel is safely making its way to the shores of Zionist entity. All passengers are safe,' it said. Just before midnight local time on Saturday, video streamed live from the Handala showed Zionist troops boarding the vessel. An online tracker showed the ship in international waters west of Gaza. The ship had been on course to try to break a Zionist naval blockade of Gaza and bring a small quantity of humanitarian aid to the territory's Palestinian residents. The Handala's crew had said before their capture in a post on X that they would go on a hunger strike if the Zionist army intercepted the boat and detained its passengers. On board were activists from 10 countries, including two French MPs from the left-wing France Unbowed party, Emma Fourreau and Gabrielle Cathala. There are also American, European and Arab activists among those detained. A previous boat sent by Freedom Flotilla, the Madleen, was also intercepted by the Zionist military in international waters on June 9 and towed to Ashdod. It carried 12 campaigners, including prominent Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. The activists were eventually expelled by Zionist entity. – AFP

Kuwaiti Gets 5 Years for Attempting to Sneak Out Revoked Citizens

KUWAIT CITY, July 27: The Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Al-Dhuwaihi, has sentenced a Kuwaiti citizen to five years in prison for attempting to smuggle individuals whose citizenships had been revoked. Additionally, the court handed down three-year prison sentences to several accomplices, including a corporal stationed at the Nuwaiseeb border crossing, his brother, and a stateless individual, for falsifying entry and exit documents. Meanwhile, the court chose not to impose penalties on three others (a man, a juvenile, and a woman) whose citizenships had also been revoked. Their arrests followed a coordinated ambush and surveillance operation conducted by detectives, which included photographing the suspects at the time of capture.

Kuwait Arrests 44 Workers in Surprise Raid Over Labor and Residency Violations

KUWAIT CITY, July 27: Kuwaiti authorities arrested 44 laborers during a surprise inspection at a major construction site, in a sweeping crackdown on illegal workers amid efforts to regulate the country's labor market. The Public Authority for Manpower (PAM), in coordination with the Joint Tripartite Committee, launched the unannounced raid at the Al-Naeem Housing Project under the directives of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah. The campaign uncovered a range of labor violations, including workers found employed by companies other than their sponsors, laborers working in professions not listed on their permits, and individuals residing in Kuwait illegally. Among the violations: 12 workers were found under the domestic servant category (Article 20) but were working in construction. 1 worker was found violating the law under the shepherd category. 28 workers were employed by companies that were not licensed to operate on the site. 3 individuals were caught for residency violations. The arrested laborers were reportedly working under the names of Arab Contractors and First Group, without possessing the required permits and engaging in unauthorized job roles. In an official statement, PAM emphasized that the inspection is part of a broader campaign to enforce Kuwait's labor laws and create a safer, more organized work environment for all stakeholders. The authority affirmed that inspections will continue with full force and violators will face strict legal action. 'These measures are being implemented in collaboration with relevant agencies to deter violations and maintain the integrity of Kuwait's labor market,' the statement read.
