WGA Issues ‘Do Not Work' Order Against Randall Emmett, Martin Scorsese-Produced Film ‘Wall of White'

Yahoo17-04-2025

The Writers Guild of America West has released an advisory to members ordering them to not work on 'Wall of White,' a true-story disaster film project from producers Randall Emmett and Martin Scorsese, due to Emmett's inclusion on the union's strike/unfair list.
'Emmett has a long history of refusing to honor obligations to writers and the Guild has filed numerous arbitration claims against companies owned by Emmett over the last decade,' the guild said in the advisory.
'Wall of White' is set to be adapted from a 2010 book of the same name by Jennifer Woodlief and the 2021 Netflix documentary 'Buried,' both of which recount a deadly avalanche at Lake Tahoe in 1982 that killed seven people. A rescue team was able to rescue an eighth person who was buried in the snow for five days.
Emmett was first added to the strike list in 2020 after he and his longtime business partner, George Furla, failed to pay writers for work on 'Pump,' an abandoned TV project that was set to star Arnold Schwarzenegger. Their studio, Emmett/Furla Oasis films, had shut down after years of breach of contract lawsuits from financiers and production partners and millions of dollars in debt.
The WGA won a judgment against Emmett/Furla Oasis for $541,464, a sum that the guild says now exceeds $700,000 with interest. In 2022, Emmett established a new production company, Convergence Entertainment Group, which is producing 'Wall of White.'
TheWrap has reached out to reps for Emmett and Scorsese for comment. In a statement sent to The Los Angeles Times, which first reported the WGA advisory, Emmett said he would resolve any issues with the WGA.
'We are fully financing this movie, and we have every intention to settle this dispute in the coming weeks,' Emmett said. 'Our representatives will be reaching out to the Writers Guild so we can put this matter from six years ago behind us.'
Emmett has had a working relationship with Scorsese dating back to the famed director's 2016 passion project 'Silence,' based on Shusaku Endo's novel about the persecution of Christians in 17th century Japan. Emmett and EFO Films came aboard the project as producers and financiers, allowing Scorsese to move forward on the film after more than two decades of setbacks. Emmett later served as a producer on Scorsese's 2019 film 'The Irishman,' which was released on Netflix and had a $150 million budget with CGI used to de-age the film's stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.

'I felt betrayed': 'Love is Blind' star Lydia explains why she divorced husband Milton

'I felt betrayed': 'Love is Blind' star Lydia explains why she divorced husband Milton Show Caption Hide Caption Milton from 'Love is Blind' reflects on fiancée Lydia's past with Uche Milton Johnson from Netflix's "Love is Blind" opened up about his relationship with fiancée Lydia and why he loves that they're so "different." Fan favorite "Love Is Blind" couple Lydia Velez Gonzalez and Milton Johnson are divorcing after three years of marriage. The pair, who met on Season 5 of the hit Netflix dating show, are splitting after turmoil in their marriage, Gonzalez revealed on a Wednesday, June 11 episode of the What's the Reality? podcast. While their marriage once felt like a fairy tale, the 34-year-old geologist said she now feels that Johnson was never ready to be a husband. "It wasn't one thing. Yeah, it was a layer of situations and things that just kept piling it up," Gonzalez told host and fellow "Love Is Blind" alum Amber Desiree "AD" Smith. When Gonzalez informed Johnson that she would file for divorce, he allegedly said he would not sign them unless there was a non-disclosure agreement. "And that said enough for me to know that I needed to share my truth and my experience, because I've been suffering in silence," she said. "This is just my chance to speak my truth for me and for other people that always reach out to me and tell me that I'm an inspiration. I feel that it was very hypocritical me not share this with the world when they have been so transparent with me." Lydia said Milton would not cut off 'disrespectful' ex-partner One of the first signs of trouble in their marriage was an argument the two had about one of Johnson's ex-partners, according to Gonzalez. She considered the woman "very insistent" and "very disrespectful towards our marriage." She added that he also kept a ripped up love letter from the woman in a shoebox at their apartment. At one point, Gonzalez went through Johnson's phone and said she found a text from him referring to the woman that read "I want to (expletive) that person." "When I saw that my heart went to the floor. I felt like betrayed and disrespected," she said. "And then I remember calling him and telling him, 'how long has it been that you want to (expletive) this person.' And he was like, 'what are we talking about.'" Johnson denied any infidelity, adding that he would never jeopardize their marriage and said "that's how boys talk," according to Gonzalez. USA TODAY has reached out to Johnson for comment. 'Love is Blind' pair tried marriage counseling Gonzalez said that her husband felt that she had violated their trust and one day called her "stupid and an untrustworthy person." "I don't consider myself a jealous person, unless you give me motives to, once you give me motives to I'll become a detective. I don't care because my gut instinct is so clever. I mean, it never fails me," she said. She added that the two participated in couple's therapy but that she felt it was not working. Gonzalez said other issues included Johnson becoming distant and addicted to the video game "Halo" and him allegedly scolding her in front of his family for cursing too much. Over time, she said his comments "kept making me feel small" and eventually made the decision to end the relationship she once felt showed her the "kind of love that I've never received before." The pair met on Season 5 of the reality dating show on Netflix, in which contestants looking for romance interact via pods designed to keep their appearances a mystery.

Watch this drag queen give a master class on dealing with anti-LGBTQ+ protesters

Trying to talk to conservative Christians should come with hazard pay, but one drag queen is going viral for her unique way of turning the interaction around. While attending Canyon Country Pride on June 8, drag queen Cookie Pusss passed by a man named Paul who was holding a sign reading, 'I'm A Sinner' while encouraging Pride parade attendees to repent their sins, Queerty reports. 'Anything that does not reflect the nature and character of god is not to be worshipped,' Paul said of people glorifying pride as a virtue in the now-viral TikTok video. We've all been to Pride Parades where anti-LGBTQ+ Christian protestors have held up hateful signs and hurled bible verses at queer marchers, but Cookie Pusss managed to stop Paul dead in his tracks by asking him a random "get to know you" style question that turns the whole conversation around: 'What's your favorite pizza topping?' In an instant, Paul goes from having a scowl on his face to smiling, but seems unsure why he's being asked about pizza, calling the question a 'non sequitur' while they were having a 'good conversation.' Me and Paul the Protestor talk about idolatry and bacon on pizza at #canyoncountypride2025 #gaypride #pizza #protestor #paul #gay #idolatry 'I would give it a five out of 10. You were just kind of spouting stuff. I think the cool stuff is getting to know you,' Cookie Pusss responds. The drag queen tells Paul that if he tells her what his favorite kind of pizza is, she'll listen to him 'talk about idolatry for like five more minutes.' Paul lights up and says, 'What a deal,' before telling Cookie Pusss that bacon is his favorite topping. The two have a short conversation about pizza as though they were friends and not on opposing sides of a vast political divide, before she says, 'Well, see, now we have something we can relate on.' See on Instagram The comment section of the TikTok video, which has already been viewed 670,000 times at the time of publication, is full of people who are pleasantly surprised that the drag queen was able to turn the conversation around so easily by talking to Paul as though he were a friend. 'I'm not joking this needs to be studied because you literally made him snap out of it for a second,' someone commented. 'Oh he flirting honeyyyy,' another person wrote. 'Wait a second, tricking them into a real convo might heal the entire world,' commented someone else. 'Honestly the way you switched him from hateful religious monologuing to actual conversation was brilliant, I hope that helped him see you and others within the LGBT community as a person,' another comment read. Cookie Pusss has tried other tactics with anti-LGBTQ+ protestors, including in April when she posed and twerked in front of them in a granny-square skirt, high-heeled boots, and a bikini-style top. But it was this simple question about pizza that seems to have made the biggest difference. Cookie Pusss did not immediately respond to Pride's request for comment.
