Pakistan deputy PM to travel to US next week for UN meetings on Palestine, multilateralism
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Foreign Minister (FM) Ishaq Dar will travel to the United States next week to chair UN Security Council meetings in New York focused on multilateralism and the Palestinian issue, the foreign office said in a statement on Saturday. Pakistan assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council earlier this month and is hosting a series of 'signature events' — or high-level meetings organized by the Council president — to spotlight key diplomatic priorities. Dar will chair an open debate on strengthening multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes, and preside over a quarterly debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question. 'The high-level debate aims at exploring ways to strengthen multilateralism, and at enhancing diplomacy and mediation for peaceful settlement of disputes,' the foreign office said. Dar will also lead a briefing at the Council on enhancing cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as part of Pakistan's broader effort to bolster institutional partnerships for international peace and security. 'To express Pakistan's strong commitment, and unwavering support for the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people, the DPM/FM will also attend the high-level Conference on the 'Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the implementation of Two-State Solution,'' the statement added. Pakistan has consistently supported Palestinian statehood and called for an end to Israeli occupation in various multilateral forums. During his stay in New York, Dar is expected to hold bilateral meetings with UN officials and counterparts from other member states. The foreign office said he will also travel to Washington for other official engagements. 'Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar's visit to New York and Washington exemplifies Pakistan's growing role and importance in the multilateral arena as well as its expanding multifaceted relations with the US,' the statement said.

At least 19 injured after fireworks show goes awry at fair in western Germany
German authorities say at least 19 people were injured, four seriously, after a fireworks show went awry at a fair in the western city of Dusseldorf. Fire squads and emergency services deployed after the incident late Friday at the Rheinkirmes event along the Rhine river, where images from the scene showed fireworks going off nearly at ground level along its banks. A child was among the injured, the DPA news agency reported. Dusseldorf fire services said police were investigating the cause of the accident. 'Our thoughts are with those affected and their families. We wish all those affected a speedy recovery from the consequences of the accident. We deeply regret the accident,' said Peter Dietlmaier, a spokesman. Organizers ended the fair early for the day and were deciding whether to continue the traditional fireworks at next years event, he said. The 10-day fair features amusement park rides, drone and fireworks shows, and other entertainment by hundreds of staff along the left bank of the Rhine opposite the city's historic district. The fair is organized by the St. Sebastianus Rifle Club, which traces its history to the year 1316.

Report: Israel Seeks US Help on Deals to Move Palestinians Out of Gaza
The director of Israel's Mossad agency, David Barnea, visited Washington this week seeking US help in convincing countries to take hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from Gaza, two sources with knowledge of the issue told Axios on Friday. Barnea told White House envoy Steve Witkoff that Israel has been speaking in particular with Ethiopia, Indonesia and Libya. 'In their meeting earlier this week, Barnea told Witkoff that Ethiopia, Indonesia and Libya had expressed openness to receiving large numbers of Palestinians from Gaza,' the two sources said. Barnea suggested that the US offer incentives to those countries and help Israel convince them. One source said that Witkoff was non-committal, and it is not clear if the US will actively weigh in on this issue. In February, US President Donald Trump proposed the removal of all two million Palestinians from Gaza to rebuild the enclave. But the White House cooled on the idea after getting significant pushback from Arab countries, US officials say, and it hasn't gone anywhere. Israeli officials say the Trump administration told them that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to pursue this idea, Israel needs to find countries that are willing to take Palestinians from Gaza. Netanyahu tasked Israel's Mossad foreign intelligence agency with finding countries that would agree to receive large numbers of Palestinians displaced from the Gaza Strip.
