Lord's Test, India's playing XI: Bumrah returns, but will Arshdeep also play?
While Rishabh Pant was coy about how India will approach the pitch, England captain Ben Stokes expects the track to be similar to the one used for the World Test Championship Final last month. This presents an opportunity for Arshdeep Singh to make his much-awaited Test debut. Given that Prasidh Krishna has struggled so far in England, Arshdeep seems to be the straightforward option at the moment.Irfan Pathan endorsed the inclusion of the young left-arm pacer in the playing XI to help Bumrah with the new ball."Now that Bumrah is coming back Akashdeep has to bowl with new ball from the other end. I think it's pretty straight forward as far as I'm concerned," said Pathan on X.If Arshdeep makes the cut, then one of Washington Sundar or Nitish Kumar Reddy is expected to sit out. Nitish didn't have the best of outings at Edgbaston as he failed with the bat and didn't create a lot of impact with the ball.Sundar played a good hand with the bat in the first innings and got the wicket of Stokes in the second one that tilted the match in India's favour. If India chooses to have the luxury of an extra spinner at Lord's, expect Sundar to retain his spot over Nitish.Another point of discussion will be if India will continue to trust Karun Nair or will they bring back Sai Sudharsan for the No.3 spot. Karun hasn't lit up the stage with the bat so far but has shown signs of brilliance. So, expect him to continue for atleast the third Test.ENG vs IND: India's playing XI for Lord's TestYashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar/Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Humpy on Song, makes Chess World Cup semis; Divya Holds Harika to play tiebreaks; Heartbreak for Vaishali
1 2 3 Nagpur: India's most experienced Grandmaster and world No.5 Koneru Humpy made China's 19-year-old Yuxin Song dance to her tunes to enter the semifinals of the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup in Batumi, Georgia, on Sunday. While Humpy split the point with young Song in 53 moves in the second game to clinch the quarterfinal contest 1.5-0.5, to set her semifinal date with an experienced Chinese GM and top seed, Lei Tingjie. The world No.3, Tingjie, ended the campaign of Georgia's Nana Dzagnidze with a 2-0 triumph. Tingjie utilised her opening advantage with the white pieces to register a hard-fought 72-move win over Dzagnidze and entered the semifinal in style by winning both her games in the classical format. The classical battle between compatriots, Divya Deshmukh and D Harika, ended in an entertaining 60-move draw. The all-Indian quarterfinal will now be decided in the tiebreaks to be played in the rapid and blitz formats with different time controls. Another India-China clash saw a marathon game where China's world No.8 Tan Zhongyi ended Vaishali Rameshbabu's campaign. In a marathon 88-move Semi-Slav defense, Vaishali failed to defend with her black pieces, losing the second game and bowing out of the quarterfinals 0.5-1.5. The contest between an experienced Indian GM and China's young International Master (IM) saw a Queen's Pawn Opening game of Chigorin Variation, with Humpy defending an unusual position where Song lined up her pawns by the 19th move. Aiming to come out of that unusual position, Humpy brought her rook into the field and made a dubious move on the 32nd turn. The position protecting Song's kingdom remained the same until the 35th turn when Humpy checked her Chinese opponent, and both exchanged their queens. Humpy then utilised the services of her attacking pawn while bringing her rook into a better position. With Humpy all set to become two pawns up, both players repeated their moves, and the game ended in a draw after 53 moves. Humpy said, "It feels happy to qualify for the semifinal without playing tiebreaks. I could have played better, but in time trouble, I slipped out. I will utilise the rest day in preparing as my semifinal against Tingjie is going to be a very tough match. Being a top seed, she is one of the strongest opponents." In the battle of compatriots, defending with her black pieces against an experienced Harika was always a tough task for Divya. The 19-year-old came under severe time trouble, and despite an advancing pawn in an equal position with both having a rook and three pawns at the 42nd turn, Divya had to compromise more time to bail herself out. She did that by bringing her king to the centre, and both were left with a rook and two pawns in the endgame. Though Divya became a pawn up on the 52nd turn, she was severely low on time, and Harika had placed her king in a better position. Within the next eight moves, both Divya and Harika signed the peace treaty to head into the tiebreaks for a place in the semifinals set to be played between Indian and Chinese masters. India No.3 and 15th ranked Vaishali suffered a heartbreaking defeat against China No.4, Tan. For the second successive day, Vaishali and Tan played out a lengthy game and were the last to finish their contest. Defending with the black pieces against Tan was always a tricky task, but Vaishali successfully brought the position equal in the midgame. A blunder on the 58th turn made Vaishali lose a pawn in an equal position with both having a rook, bishop, and a couple of pawns. On the 73rd move, Vaishali lost her rook and became a piece down with an extra pawn. The 2546 Elo Tan utilised her rook to force Vaishali to resign in the 88th move. With Vaishali's exit, the World Cup semifinals will be a battle between Indian and Chinese masters. The only thing remaining is to identify Tan's opponent — experienced Harika or young Divya.

India's mounting injury woes ahead of 4th Test: From Nitish Reddy blow to Rishabh Pant worry
India's injury list is mounting by the day with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy ruled out of the remaining two Tests. Having headed to England with Jasprit Bumrah unavailable to play more than three Tests because of workload management, India will have to shuffle their options in Manchester to stay alive in the series. And, if they do win at Old Trafford with Bumrah in the XI, they'd have a huge call to make before the fifth Test. After suffering a side-strain during the white-ball series against England at home, Nitish spent a considerable time at the NCA before being cleared to feature in the IPL. But he bowled just 30 deliveries in the entire edition before heading to England. After playing the two India A games, he played the previous two Tests before suffering an injury to his ligament on Sunday that is set to cut short his tour. The left-arm pacer was in contention to get a look-in towards the business end of the series, but a cut on his bowling hand during a net session has ruled him out at least for the fourth Test. The selectors have sent Anshul Kamboj, who impressed during the A series before the Test tour, as a cover and he is now in the mix as well. After an impressive show at Edgbaston, the Bengal seamer was seen struggling at Lord's. It is understood that Akash is grappling with a groin niggle which makes him an unlikely starter in Manchester. With uncertainty around Bumrah for the fifth Test, India are keeping their fingers crossed on Akash's quick recovery. If not, they may have to send an SOS to selectors again. Since he came back into the fold after the horrific accident, the team management and selectors have kept an eye on his workload. The priority has been to make him play Tests and heading to Old Trafford, it would be interesting to see if Pant starts as a wicketkeeper or as a specialist batsman. He suffered a hand injury, which made Dhruv Jurel keep wickets in the third Test. While scans have showed no major worries, it remains a concern for India.

All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and seamer Arshdeep Singh have been ruled out of the 4th Test match against England, India Today has learnt. Reddy, who played well in the Lord's Test match last week, copped a serious knee injury on July 20. The masthead has learnt that Reddy damaged his ligament during a gym session on Sunday and has been ruled out of the fourth Test match of the series. The SRH all-rounder replaced Shardul Thakur in the second Test match. While he did not make an immediate impact in Birmingham, he was crucial in the 3rd Test match, especially with the ball, giving India top-order breakthroughs in the first innings. The list of injuries has come as an additional concern over the team's issues related to workload management. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has already played 2 out of the promised three Test matches, while Mohammed Siraj is also on the brink of burnout, considering his non-stop workload in red-ball matches since Existing InjuriesIndia were suffering from an injury crisis since the last Test match at Lord's. Rishabh Pant copped a blow on his left finger on Day 1 of the Test match and has not been able to keep wickets since. If India's drills are of any indication, then it is likely that Dhruv Jurel will don the wicketkeeper's gloves in Manchester, with Rishabh Pant playing as a full-time change will make India's bowling short, and given the unavailability of Nitish Reddy, it will cause India massive Today also learnt that the team has already drafted in Anshul Kamboj in the squad. However, an official announcement has not been made.
