RBI Governor's tie and speech hints at policy tilt, says SBI in light-hearted report

Mint07-07-2025
In an unconventional take on central bank signalling, a recent Business Standard report highlights how State Bank of India (SBI) analysts are decoding not just the RBI's policy language, but also Governor Sanjay Malhotra's tie colours, to assess monetary direction.
According to SBI's latest research note, The Monetary Multiverse, the use of the word 'growth' surged in the June 2025 monetary policy statement, appearing 24 times. This increased focus on growth, analysts say, preceded a 50-basis point rate cut, suggesting a potential shift in policy priorities.
SBI, however, noted that its analysis is 'to be taken on a lighter note'. Still, the frequency of words like 'growth' and 'inflation', visualised via word clouds, can reflect a central bank's tilt. A higher mention of 'growth', for instance, may signal a more accommodative stance.
The report also introduces 'Necktie Nomics': a data-backed (if playful) analysis linking the RBI Governor's tie colours to rate actions.
The report read, 'In this alternate universe, monetary policy doesn't just follow inflation or GDP, it follows the Governor's wardrobe. When repo decisions are made, it's not just models and mandates that matter, but the shade of silk around the RBI Governor's neck.' Warm (red, orange): Tied to a hawkish bias and more rate hikes
Tied to a hawkish bias and more rate hikes Cool (blue, aqua): Typically aligned with status quo decisions
Typically aligned with status quo decisions Dark (black, navy): Not linked to a specific direction, but often worn during decisive policy actions
Not linked to a specific direction, but often worn during decisive policy actions Mixed (purple, yellow): Associated with high policy unpredictability
SBI then created a Tie Volatility and Tilt Index (TVTI), which combines the likelihood of a rate action with its consistency across similar tone categories. The report notes that the dark tie worn by the Governor during the recent 50 bps rate cut fits the 'decisive action' theory.
The report notes that while such indicators are not intended to replace macroeconomic models, they provide an interesting, albeit unconventional, perspective on interpreting central bank behaviour.

Job losses, salary cuts and shutdowns: This country is in massive danger due to Trump's taxes, the country is...

Donald Trump- File image US-China trade war: In a major update amid the global trade war initiated by the United States of America, under the leadership of Donald Trump, media reports have indicated that the new US tariffs are forecast to sharply reduce Chinese corporate profits, particularly in technology, manufacturing, and export-driven sectors. As a result of the ongoing trade tussle between US and China, China is expected to be massively impacted by widespread job losses, business shutdowns, and a wave of bankruptcies. Here are all the details you need to know about the economic trouble expected in China. Although it may seem that China is not facing any substantial challenges on the economic front due to its political posturing, media reports say that China is planning to tackle the trade war with expanding its presence in alternate markets, stimulating domestic consumption, and adapting its trade and economic policies. Why tariffs on China is good news for India? Due to the rising tariffs on China, a report by State Bank of India (SBI) has indicated that India has a significant opportunity to increase its chemical exports to the United States if it manages to negotiate for less than 25 per cent tariffs. As reported by ANI news agency, the SBI report noted that by capturing a part of the market share currently held by China and Singapore, India can increase its share in chemical exports to US. How India can beat China? The report highlighted that if India is able to capture just 2 per cent of the chemical export share from these two countries, it can potentially add 0.2 per cent to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The report pointed out that among the top five imports by the USA, India has a revealed comparative advantage (RCA) only in the chemicals sector. With China now facing higher tariffs on exports to the US, the report notes that this could open a window of opportunity for India to step in and increase its exports in chemicals, including pharmaceutical products. Indias forex reserves dip $3.06 bn to $696.67 bn, second straight weekly decline

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 20 (ANI): India's foreign exchange reserves fell by USD 3.06 billion to USD 696.67 billion for the week ending July 11, marking the second straight week of decline, according to the official data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In the previous reporting week of July 4, the country's forex reserves witnessed a slip of USD 3.049 billion to USD 699.736 billion. In the week ending July 11, foreign currency assets, which are the major constituent of the forex reserves, fell USD 2.477 billion to USD 588.81 billion, possibly becoming the major reason for the fall in the forex reserves. The Gold reserves, another major component of the forex, again witnessed a sharp fall of USD 498 million to USD 84.348 billion. The country's Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) with the global financial body, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), saw a dip of USD 66 million to USD 18.802 billion during the reporting week of July 11, according to the RBI data. The Reserve Position in the IMF also decreased by USD 24 million, according to the data. Central banks worldwide are increasingly accumulating safe-haven gold in their foreign exchange reserves kitty, and India is no exception. The share of gold maintained by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its foreign exchange reserves has almost doubled since 2021, till recently. In 2023, India added around USD 58 billion to its foreign exchange reserves, contrasting with a cumulative decline of USD 71 billion in 2022. In 2024, the reserves rose by a little over USD 20 billion, touching an all-time high of USD 704.885 billion at the end of September 2024. India's foreign exchange reserves (Forex) are sufficient to meet 11 months of the country's imports and about 96 per cent of external debt, said Governor Sanjay Malhotra while announcing the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decisions. The RBI governor expressed confidence, stating that India's external sector is resilient and key external sector vulnerability indicators are improving. Foreign exchange reserves, or FX reserves, are assets held by a nation's central bank or monetary authority, primarily in reserve currencies such as the US Dollar, with smaller portions in the Euro, Japanese Yen, and Pound Sterling. The RBI often intervenes by managing liquidity, including selling dollars, to prevent steep Rupee depreciation. The RBI strategically buys dollars when the Rupee is strong and sells when it weakens.
