João Almeida, a key teammate of Pogačar, exits Tour de France after rib fracture
Almeida, who fractured a rib during Stage 7, was dropped early during Sunday's ninth stage between Chinon and Châteauroux, and UAE Team Emirates-XRG later announced over the race radio that the Portuguese rider had retired.

Almeida was caught in a high-speed crash earlier this week as riders scrambled for position at the front, 6 kilometers (4 miles) from the finish line. Almeida escaped without a concussion but his rib fracture finally proved to be too painful to carry on in the three-week race.
Almeida finished fourth at the 2024 Tour de France and started this year's edition on the back of excellent preparations, having won the Tour de Suisse, Tour de Romandie and Itzulia Basque Country.
Sunday's stage heads into central France on a 158-kilometer (98-mile) flat stage for sprinters.

Josh Kerr was another expected to be among the winners but, although he ran a season's best of 3.29.37, Kenya's Phanuel Koech had the measure of the reigning world champion. Georgia Hunter-Bell produced a decisive finishing kick in the women's 800m, running a season's best of 1.56.74 to beat America's Addison Wiley, while Jemma Reekie (sixth) and Laura Muir (10th) were down the field. Morgan Lake claimed victory in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.96m but there was disappointment for Molly Caudery in the women's pole vault as the 2024 world indoor champion cleared 4.60m, some way short of even her season's best of 4.85m, to place fifth. Dina Asher-Smith posted her best time this year in the women's 200m, running 22.25 behind Julien Alfred, with team-mate Amy Hunt third in a new PB of 22.31. The first British quartet of Asher-Smith, Hunt, Desiree Henry and Daryll Neita came out on top in their women's 4x100m relay, running 41.69 seconds to beat second-placed Jamaica, with the second GB entry coming home sixth. The first men's GB team of Jeremiah Azu, Louie Hinchcliffe, Romell Glave and Zharnel Hughes ran 38.08 to finish second to a dominant Jamaican team in the men's 4x100m relay, with the second British quartet taking third. National 400m finals yielded victories for Lewis Davey (44.91) and Victoria Ohuruogu (51.22), with Seamus Derbyshire (48.82) winning a domestic men's 400m hurdle final. Lawrence Okoye had to settle for third in the men's discus with a throw of 67.24m behind Mykolas Alekna's meeting record of 71.70m, while the Netherlands' Femke Bol delivered a comprehensive victory in the women's 400m hurdles, as Britain's Lina Nielsen finished sixth. Noah Lyles was defeated in first 100m since winning gold in Paris last year, running 10 seconds flat as Jamica's Oblique Seville powered home in a time of 9.86. Rashford closing in on Barcelona move: reports
Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford is closing in on a move to Barcelona, reports said on Saturday. The 27-year-old has not played for his boyhood club since December 12, and joined Aston Villa on loan in early February. The Spanish champions have reportedly been his preferred destination since he was dropped by United manager Ruben Amorim. Britain's Press Association said talks were progressing on a deal to take Rashford to Barcelona, with a season-long loan including an option to buy being worked on. Rashford is among five players to have informed United they wish to explore a future away from Old Trafford, where he came through the academy and scored 138 goals in 426 first-team appearances. The England international admitted he was "ready for a new challenge" in December and last month revealed he would like to play alongside Barcelona's teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal. Rashford has trained away from Amorim's first-team squad since pre-season began. Barcelona sporting director Deco said in May that he liked Rashford and head coach Hansi Flick described the forward as a "fantastic player". Rashford does not have a squad number at United having lost the 10 shirt to Brazil forward Matheus Cunha, who arrived at Old Trafford during the current transfer window along with left-back Diego Leon. Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join them after United finally struck a deal with Brentford worth an initial £65 million ($87 million). United will likely have to fund any further deals through departures. Even if Rashford were to leave initially on loan, the savings on the wage bill would be significant. Barcelona had looked set to sign Spain winger Nico Williams but the 23-year-old recently signed a new 10-year contract at Athletic Bilbao.
