Former Rangers TV commentator takes aim at Rio Ferdinand over 'unashamed' Man Utd commentary
Veteran commentator Clive Tyldesley has likened TNT Sport's commentary of Manchester United's dramatic win against Lyon to the club's own TV channel.
The broadcaster, who said it was 'wonderful adventure' when he worked for Rangers ' in-house TV station during the Covid-19 season, was less than impressed with Red Devils icon Ferdinand - as he wildly celebrated his former side levelling late on in the Europa League epic.
Ferdinand and boyhood United fan Robbie Savage could be heard cheering as Kobbie Mainoo and then Harry Maguire scored in the final seconds of the match to secure a remarkable win for Ruben Amorim's men.
And TNT Sports later released a 'commentator cam' that showed both failing to contain themselves, as lead commentator Darren Fletcher trying to calm the duo down.
But it drew a furious reaction on social media, with Tyldesley now the latest to add his voice to the criticism - questioning if is what viewers at home want to be hearing.
Posting on his Substack blog, he said: "On TNT Sport, lead commentator Darren Fletcher was playing gooseberry to two former United players that were just loving the comeback.
"We know this because Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Savage could not only be heard but also seen on CommCam.
"So, just in case we were wondering if Rio's voice had temporarily lost the frequency of the commentator's traditional neutrality, we could watch his fist punching the air over and over in delight.
"I got the impression that he maybe knew the hidden camera was there. Could be wrong.
"Fletch had been savvy enough to take a deep breath in the wake of United's equaliser – my wonderful mentor Reg Gutteridge used to call it 'thinking time' – before delivering the catchy line 'Kobbie Mainoo is the coolest kid in Old Trafford and Manchester United are level'.
"Either side of him, Rio and Robbie were unashamedly losing their collective cool to welcome us to MUTV.
"'Go and get the winner,' beamed Robbie. And so said every City, Leeds and Liverpool fan watching on too. Not.
"The day of the commentator fan – Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher et al – is here but does it work?"
It's not the first time the iconic former ITV man has criticised Ferdinand, with Ally McCoist also not escaping his ire.
Previously he said: "Having the judgment and knowledge to read a game doesn't necessarily give an ex-player the ability to read it out loud to an audience of millions,' Tyldesley wrote. 'They are two separate professions with their own techniques and thought processes.
"If you are coming from football into broadcasting, you need to be schooled and coached in the methods and disciplines of communication. Your words should count."
Tyldsley was the voice of Rangers TV as the Gers won the 2021 Premiership title, and he proved something of a good luck charm at Ibrox, previously telling FourFourTwo: "Rangers really wanted me – they'd done a deal to provide free coverage of all of their home games for their season ticket holders until they could go back into the stadium.
"I was fortunate that Rangers won every game I commentated on, I think!
"It became a wonderful 18-month adventure... although I learned that I didn't know Glasgow football quite as well as I thought.
"In a commentary I try to find a different way of saying the same thing, and I was talking about a Celtic match that was happening at the same time as Rangers were playing.
"I had given the score as Celtic this, Celtic that, and I happened to say, 'The Hoops have now gone three up'.
"I got so much mail from Rangers fans, all quite sympathetic, but there was an element of warning.
"One guy said, 'They are either Celtic, or they are 'them'.' So from that point on, Celtic were Celtic – don't call them something that sounds affectionate!"

Viktor Gyokeres responds to new Man Utd offer with deal close for Arsenal target
Manchester United are on the brink of agreeing a deal with Sporting CP for Viktor Gyokeres, desperate to bring him to Old Trafford if his proposed move to Arsenal falls through. The Gunners have identified the Sweden international as their leading transfer target up front and have made huge progress in getting a deal over the line in recent weeks. Agreeing personal terms has not been a problem with Gyokeres eager to join Mikel Arteta's side and play in the Champions League next season. But Arsenal are still to agree a fee with Sporting who are standing firm on add-on payments, refusing to be bullied into any deal. Reports in Portugal this weekend have claimed the proposed move is now in real jeopardy with Gyokeres' father convinced it is going to fall through. That uncertainty has invited United forward to make one last play to sign the striker who previously starred under Amorim in the Portuguese capital during their time together at Sporting. News agency SIC Noticias report United are negotiating an offer with a higher value than the one currently being proposed by Arsenal – €63.5 million (£54.9m) up front, plus a further €10m (£8.6m) in bonuses. United have promised a deal worth €80million with Record reporting an agreement between the Premier League side and Sporting is very close to being agreed. However, Gyokeres has his heart set on a move to Arsenal and only wants to play for the Gunners next season. United, who have no European football on offer nest season, have already seen three approaches turned away for Gyokeres with a fourth attempt likely to be unsuccessful again. More Trending United have signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves this summer and are on the brink of bringing in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford after a third offer was accepted this week. Signing another centre forward is United's next priority. The club have already missed out on two targets this summer with Liam Delap rejecting them for Chelsea. Hugo Ekitike is also understood to have turned down a move to Old Trafford having agreed personal terms with Liverpool. Ollie Watkins and Randal Kolo Muani are two other options under consideration. 'A lot of improvement' to come from Hibs, says Gray
David Gray said "there's a lot of improvement to come" from Hibernian - but the head coach is "not getting too downhearted" by the pre-season defeat to strikes from the English third-tier side sealed a win at Easter Road in Darren McGregor's competitive action starts on Thursday for Hibs when they face a tough trip to Midtjylland in the first leg of their Europa League second-round qualifier."It wasn't our best, most fluent performance by any means," Gray told Hibs TV. "We all know that. There's a lot of improvement to come."We've got a lot of hard work still to be done and we've got a really good game to look forward to on Thursday."I'm not getting too downhearted by what I have seen. A lot of good work has been done and I'm happy with the fitness levels of the players."On former team-mate McGregor, who is now Hibs Under-19s head coach, Gray added: "It's a special day for Darren and his family. I wish we had a better result for him."But, on the whole, for what he has done for this club, it was a fitting testimonial and I'm delighted to be part of that for him."

Adam Wharton makes transfer decision amid Man Utd and Liverpool interest
Adam Wharton's stance on leaving Crystal Palace has reportedly been revealed amid transfer interest from Manchester United and Liverpool. The defensive midfielder is one of the most highly-rated young players in the Premier League following a stellar 17 months at Selhurst Park. A key cog in Oliver Glasner's side who excels both offensively and defensively, Wharton helped Palace win the FA Cup last season – the first major trophy in the club's history. Gareth Southgate called him up for Euro 2024 but untimely fitness issues have prevented him from adding to his solitary England cap. Injuries also limited the 21-year-old to just 20 league appearances last season but his talent is clear for all to see, with several big clubs around Europe interested in his services. United, Liverpool and Tottenham are all keen, as were Arsenal but their interest has likely cooled following the arrival of Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard. Ruben Amorim called on the Red Devils to sign a new central midfielder after complaining about a 'lack of pace in the middle of the park' following the goalless pre-season friendly with Leeds on Saturday. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on Wharton but will not make a move this summer due to his lack of game time last season. More Trending But Palace are under no pressure to sell their star player, who has four years left on his contract and, according to The Sun, is more than happy to stay in south London for the upcoming season. If Wharton does move on, the Eagles would demand upwards of £70million, with Blackburn Rovers due 15 per cent of the profit after selling him for an initial £18m. Glasner is desperate to hold onto his best players as Palace prepare for their first-ever European campaign, with captain Marc Guehi and talisman Eberechi Eze tipped to leave this summer. Guehi is in the last year of his contract and heavily-linked with Liverpool while Arsenal really want Eze but are reluctant to meet his £68m release clause. Back in April, Rio Ferdinand urged Manchester United to make a move for Wharton this summer, likening the youngster to former teammate and club legend Michael Carrick. 'I would sign another central midfielder this summer to play alongside Manuel Ugarte,' Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. 'That player needs to be able to take the ball and transfer it up the pitch. You know who I would do for? Adam Wharton. 'I would go and get him. The reason I would take him is he can get on the ball and transfer it up the pitch, he's got a great range of passing. 'I think he would be a great addition to the United squad. He reminds me of Michael Carrick a bit.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
