Anwar urges PKR members to ‘move on' from dispute over judicial appointments
SHAH ALAM : PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has urged party members to 'move on' and stop focusing on differences of opinion among its elected representatives regarding judicial appointments.
PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil said Anwar conveyed this message during a closed-door meeting with Selangor PKR leaders here today.
Fahmi said Anwar, who is also the prime minister, said he had no intention of taking disciplinary action against PKR MPs who held differing views on the matter.
'They have the right to express their views, and Anwar has asked division leaders and PKR members to understand this and 'move on',' he told reporters after the meeting.
Last week, 19 PKR divisions in Johor called for Rafizi Ramli and eight other PKR MPs to be suspended after the group called for the establishment of a royal commission of inquiry, and a hearing by a parliamentary select committee, following delays in the appointment of top judicial positions.
The nine MPs claimed the matter amounted to a constitutional crisis, an allegation which the Attorney-General's Chambers denied. The AGC also dismissed the call for an RCI, stating that the appointment process was proceeding at the time in accordance with the Federal Constitution.
The division chiefs said the MPs' actions not only breached party discipline and ethics, but also cast a negative light on the prime minister's leadership and opened the door to political manipulation by rivals.
In a statement yesterday, the office of the chief registrar said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh's appointment as the chief justice, Abu Bakar Jais's appointment as president of the Court of Appeal, and Azizah Nawawi's appointment as chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak.
They will be sworn in and presented with their letters of appointment at Istana Negara on July 28.
Fahmi, who is the communications minister, also said that appointments for positions in PKR's state leadership councils will be finalised by the end of this month.

SEREMBAN: No disciplinary action will be taken against the nine PKR members of Parliament who criticised judicial appointments and called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry, PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said. According to Fuziah, party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told Negri Sembilan PKR grassroots today that there's no issue of suspension, as the MPs were merely voicing concerns related to the people. The meeting, attended by some 1,000 party members, also included PKR vice-presidents Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, Chang Lih Kang and Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, as well as Fuziah, women's wing chief Fadhlina Sidek and youth wing chief Muhammad Kamil Munim. Fuziah said the tour is part of a nationwide effort to rebuild unity among grassroots leaders, including those who lost in the party's recent internal polls. "We're not fighting enemies, just having differences among siblings. Unity is key if we want to move forward," she said. Calls had previously emerged from within PKR for action to be taken against Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and eight other MPs over their criticism of appointments in the judiciary.

Ex-military, police officers to serve as wardens at 2 Mara colleges

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has appointed retired military and police officers as hostel wardens for two Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSMs) under a pilot initiative starting next month. Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the two colleges are MRSM Besut in Terengganu and MRSM Balik Pulau in Penang, with the appointment of not more than 10 male and female wardens, Bernama reported. 'We have conducted a series of interviews and we've shortlisted candidates. God willing, they will begin their duties in August. 'The standard operating procedures have also been provided and we will continue with the training,' he told reporters after opening the Bukit Gantan Umno meeting today. In April, Asyraf announced Mara's plan to appoint hostel wardens from among former police and military personnel for selected MRSMs to curb bullying. He said Mara would monitor the six-month trial period to evaluate the pros and cons of the initiative. Asyraf said today the appointment of wardens from among retired military and police personnel did not mean they would use harsh disciplinary methods. 'We are starting this initiative with clear SOPs and strong foundational guidelines so that our children receive proper supervision and attention for their development in a safe hostel environment. 'We want to reassure parents that we do not compromise when it comes to bullying, be it physical or mental,' he said. FMT previously quoted criminologist Shahul Hamid Abd Rahim as urging Mara not to grant full authority to former military and police officers appointed as hostel wardens at MRSMs. Shahul Hamid said proper supervision and clear SOPs were needed to manage students, not harsh methods, commonly used in training security forces. He said there was a real concern that these former officers might rely on a forceful approach towards students. Last month, six students from MRSM Besut were expelled for bullying a 14-year-old student. In April, seven students from an MRSM campus in Penang faced expulsion after a video showing the bullying of a fellow male student went viral.
