RUWAD funds $778mln worth of projects, welcomes 449 new members in 2024

SHARJAH: The Sharjah Foundation to Support Pioneering Entrepreneurs (RUWAD), affiliated with the Sharjah Economic Development Department, has issued its annual report for 2024, revealing the funding of 13 projects worth AED2.86 million and the addition of 449 new projects to its membership network.
The report coincides with the 20th anniversary of RUWAD's founding as a pioneering government entity in supporting leading national projects in the Emirate of Sharjah, and highlights its central role in empowering the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Hamad Ali Abdullah Al Mahmoud, Chairman of the Sharjah Economic Development Department, said the establishment of RUWAD under a decree by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in 2005, marked a turning point. He affirmed that the Foundation has succeeded in establishing an early and effective government model for supporting entrepreneurship and empowering thousands of Emirati entrepreneurs. He added that RUWAD remains an inspiring and bright chapter in Sharjah's journey of investing in people.
Fatima Al Ali, Acting Director of RUWAD, affirmed the Foundation's commitment to localising the entrepreneurial environment and driving it toward greater success.
The 2024 figures showed that RUWAD organised 57 training programmes benefiting 1,414 trainees, provided 118 consultations, and granted 81 projects government fee exemptions amounting to AED8.727 million. Government purchases from member projects totalled nearly AED3.485 million.
Amina Mohammed, Director of the Training, Research and Events Department, said RUWAD acts as an active connector, noting that last year saw 22 business matchmaking deals between projects, 17 development meetings with partners, and participation in 10 external events and exhibitions. Internally, the Foundation achieved an Emiratisation rate of 97 percent and a job satisfaction rate of 88 percent.

Renovations were made to waiting areas, facades and pavements, and new prayer areas were added. The depots upgraded were in Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Ruwayah, Al Awir, Jebel Ali, and Al Quoz. Renovations included revamped maintenance workshops, new lanes for inspection, new engine washing systems, improved lighting and drainage, upgraded driver accommodation, enhanced security and restructured parking layouts. Modernisation The enhancements are designed to encourage greater use of public transport, Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the RTA, said. 'This project is part of the RTA's ongoing efforts to reinforce Dubai's public transport infrastructure,' Mr Al Tayer said. 'We aim to transform bus stations from simple waiting areas into fully integrated service hubs that improve the overall travel experience for all passengers including people of determination and cyclists while supporting seamless connectivity with the Metro and taxi networks.' The RTA is looking to invest in its bus fleet to meet European low-emission standards, which would be a first for the Middle East and North Africa region. The authority recently signed a contract to add 637 new buses between 2025 and 2026, including 40 fully electric, zero-emission buses from Zhongtong, custom-built for the Gulf region.

Ajman government will adopt an updated job classification system, to ensure transparency in the evaluation of jobs and tasks in the public sector. This comes under a decision issued Sheikh Ahmed bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, representative of the Ruler of Ajman for Administrative and Financial Affairs. Several main and sub job groups have been created or modified in the system, to meet the needs of both existing and new government entities. In the education job group, three sub-groups were adopted: education, school administration, and student affairs. For the communication, promotion, and media job group, several sub-groups were created and modified, including: institutional communication and media, marketing, promotion and events, public relations, institutional partnerships, digital media, media documentation, editing and journalism, and photography. In the digital technology and data job group, a range of precise technical specialties were included, namely: Digital technology and data, information systems development and analysis, data science, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, information technology databases, cybersecurity, and technical support. The adoption of this updated system is based on amendments and developments introduced to the previous system issued under Decision No. (7) of 2021. The Department of Human Resources in Ajman will oversee the implementation of the system in government entities by issuing circulars, guides, and required forms. It shall submit reports documenting the progress made and the challenges that entities may face, along with providing recommendations and technical support. The new decision also repealed all previous decisions or systems related to job evaluation and classification that conflict with its provisions. The emirate called on government entities to review their job listings, align them with the new groups, and submit modification requests through the approved electronic job evaluation and classification system.

UAE and the US signed a statement that seeks to accelerate patent granting procedures in the UAE. This was signed on the sidelines of the 66th Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva, by the Ministry of Economy and Tourism and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The Joint Statement of Intent is aimed at launching a bilateral cooperation programme which provides collaborative mechanisms to recognise positive examination results issued by the USPTO for corresponding Emirati patent applications. This will be implemented in accordance with applicable national laws. The focus is on industrial property rights and the development of patent registration procedures that provide flexible and efficient services which support an innovation-driven and entrepreneurial environment. This cooperation reflects the UAE's commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of its intellectual property ecosystem by adopting international best practices, stressed Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism. He also highlighted that the partnership with the US side represents a new push to accelerate patent issuance by strengthening international cooperation and adopting advanced operational models.
