Rhayader shop dragon raises £1,700 for Wales Air Ambulance

A DECORATIVE dragon that was auctioned off for charity by a Powys shopkeeper has raised nearly £2,000 for the Wales Air Ambulance.
'Ffleur', as the dragon became fondly known, had entertained local children aplenty since Rosemary Stow put it in the window at her craft shop, Quillies, in Rhayader, June 2022.
Rosemary had countless offers to buy the crocheted dragon, made by Vicki Gregory, from Aberedw.
But due to the fact it took Vicki 80 hours to make it, Rosemary had been unable to put a value on Ffleur.
Instead, she came up with the idea of raffling it off for charity, with the winner drawn at Wonderwool Wales, an annual craft event taking place at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, at the end of April, with the proceeds donated to the Wales Air Ambulance.
'We managed to raise £1,729.70 for the Wales Air Ambulance,' said Rosemary this week.

'The winner was Lesley Bishop, from Abertillery, who was absolutely thrilled to have won it, especially as it was her birthday the day after the draw.
'My shop window is quite bare at the moment but I have put in a photo of Lesley holding the dragon with a limerick underneath.'
Quillies stocks textiles, art, jewellery, photographs, prints and ceramics, all made by a host of talented makers, with around 80 having sold their items in the shop.
Rosemary, who opened the East Street shop in 2016, wanted a centrepiece for the front window, and Vicki swooped in with Ffleur.
'I had no idea it would prove so popular,' said Rosemary, originally from Kent.
'I wanted something to grab people's attention and visitors love it. Local children love it and it's always a talking point. They make 'rawr' sound every time they pass the shop.'
She added: 'The maker took 80 hours to make so I couldn't possibly sell it and it would cost about £1,000 to sell, so I thought the best way to part with it would be a raffle.
'I decided that it would be appropriate to hold the raffle at Wonderwool Wales at the end of April and, because the Air Ambulance is the chosen charity of Wonderwool, they were happy to agree to the idea.'
A Wales Air Ambulance propeller quilt was the second prize, with other smaller dragons as additional prizes, as well as other items.
Rosemary said the quilt was won by Doreen Parker, from Swansea, while one of the baby dragons was won by a Powys resident, living in Bwlch-y-Sarnau. The other baby dragon went to a lady in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow.

Vicki hits 'tragic' pervert Joel with a very serious warning in EastEnders

Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) has issued her final warning to sick Joel Marshall (Max Murray) in EastEnders. It's about time that somebody shuts down his disgusting behaviour once and for all – but with Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) reluctant to turn his back on his son, he's pretty much been given free reign to do whatever he wants. In tonight's episode, however, Vicki swore to put a stop to that. She can see that her partner is effectively enabling Joel's vile ways, and won't stand for it any longer. Soon after his arrival, we discovered that Joel had upskirted a pupil in his class, and her family had ordered him to leave Australia in exchange for their silence. They'd also accepted a hefty $50,000 sum. The teen showed no signs of changing – recording himself sleeping with Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James), and introducing Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) to pornography. He then showed his new mate videos from an influencer, who spoke about women in a derogatory manner. The lads skived off school to take a trip into The City. On their journey home, Joel demanded Tommy whip out his phone and record something shocking. He stumbled through the carriage, falling onto a girl and touching her inappropriately. Later, Vicki met up with the victim and handed her £2,000 in exchange for her silence. In the aftermath, despite promising to do better, Joel has tore strips off Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) and Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), before seemingly leaking the latter's SecretCam content online. This came just days after Ross snapped branded his son a 'disgusting little pervert.' With the police reluctant to investigate, this couldn't be proved – but Stace' is adamant that he's responsible. Joel spiralled further after learning that Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) had aborted their unborn child, and attempted to slap her. A furious Vicki charged in his way, and dragged him home. He reeled off a number of sick ideologies, including his belief that reproduction is the purpose of womanhood. She begged him to open his eyes and wondered if he looked at her any different having not had any children herself. In a truly horrifying move, he asserted that if she pushes him further, she'd find out that a 'proper slapping would do [her] the world of good.' In tonight's episode, Joel goaded Stacey, spelling it out to her that he was responsible for leaking her content and didn't care about the consequences for her. She asserted that he was nothing more than a 'dirty, disgusting little perv' and while he may have fooled the others, he hadn't fooled her. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? More Trending Realising that her family's trauma would only continue for as long as Ross brushed off her concerns, she then caught Joel outside, calling him 'tragic'. He laughed in her face, but the smirk was soon wiped off when she told him in future she wouldn't hesitate to call the police. View More » Will Joel finally learn a lesson? Tenby Male Choir raised £2,000 for Wales Air Ambulance

Tenby Male Choir's recent concert at St Mary's Church in Tenby raised £2,000 for the Wales Air Ambulance, with around 250 people in attendance. Anthony 'Tony' Key, OBE, aged 79, is the choir's MC and a former regional fundraising manager for the air ambulance. Mr Key said: "We have performed 13 concerts so far, seven of which have been fundraisers for charities and good causes. "We have raised £7,000 and have a few more events ahead." On the latest concert, he said: "We packed out St Mary's, around 250 people supported our event in aid of Wales Air Ambulance. "The atmosphere was electric. "We raised £2,000, that's the most we have ever raised at just one concert. "We only charge £10 per person and children under 16 go free, so we are delighted to be able to donate so much." Mr Key said it means a great deal to support the Wales Air Ambulance once again. He said: "I am hugely proud to be connected with the charity. "I worked for the air ambulance for five years before stepping down in 2016 to have more family time. "We live in such a rural part of Wales, so if something serious happens to you, your best hope is the onboard clinicians. "The service brings all the expertise that you would find in an emergency department to your doorstep or roadside. "I am so pleased that we have been able to support this incredible cause." The Wales Air Ambulance relies on public donations to raise the £11.2 million needed each year to keep its helicopters flying and rapid response vehicles on the road. Mike May, regional fundraising manager for South West Wales, said: "Congratulations to all the Tenby Male Choir members on your amazing milestone. "We are delighted that as you celebrate your 50th anniversary, you have chosen us as one of the beneficiaries of your fundraising. "We'd like to extend a big thank you to all those who took part in the concert in aid of us and the generous supporters who attended on the night. "£2,000 is an incredible amount and every pound raised will help save lives." The choir opened the concert with the Welsh hymn Rachie, originally sung during the First World War, which Mr Key dedicated to the 'loyal and brave' pilots and clinicians of the air ambulance service. He said: "It's been so wonderful to bring together two things I am hugely passionate about, my singing and the amazing work of the Wales Air Ambulance." The choir's 50th anniversary concert will take place on September 4 at the De Valence Pavilion, with special guests including president Wynne Evans and feature choir Bella Voce.

EastEnders fans fear for Vicki Fowler as Joel Marshall's behaviour takes shock turn

Joel Marshall shocked fans in tonight's EastEnders as he threatened his step mum Vicki Fowler, after raising his hands to Avani Nandra-Hart It was another tense night in EastEnders tonight, as villain Joel Marshall back to his old ways. However, fans now fear for his stepmother Vicki Fowler, as the teen made a shock comments towards her. ‌ We've seen the misogynistic teen get away with a number of sick acts, most recently, releasing Stacey Slater's SecretCam footage online. ‌ Last week, it looked like there had been a breakthrough after his father Ross had thrown his laptop in the sink after discovering a number of up skirting videos on there. However, after getting away with releasing Stacey's videos, the teen seems to have gone back to his cunning ways. It comes after an EastEnders legend was rushed to hospital after a deadly attack by a familiar face. ‌ In tonight's episode, fans were left in shock when he called Avani a "murderer" for terminating her baby, after she had gotten pregnant after a one-night stand with the teen. He then raised his hand as if he was about to slap her, but it was quickly caught by his stepmother Vicki, who warned him he needed to go home. As she had a chat with him when they got home, things took a dark turn, as he told Vicki that she was controlling his "weak" dad Ross. He then began saying shock statements, such as: "Reproduction is the purpose of motherhood." He then continued to say to Vicki: "My dad's your doormat, you walk all over him. You pick away at him until he forgets he's a man. You will never control me the way you control my dad! "If he wasn't weak, he would have put you in your place months ago! Push me, and you'll soon find out a proper slapping will do you the world of good," he continued. ‌ The statement left Vicki in shock, as well as fans, who took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to discuss. "Joel just said what to Vicky?? #EastEnders" questioned one, while another wrote: "That Joel guy. Just nasty," said a second. Others fear for Vicki as one said: "Oh Joel is soooo gonna do something awful to Vicki!" while another worried fan said: "Whoever first speculated that Joel will attack Vicki - I think you're right and I almost expected it during that scene. I wonder if she'll tell Ross what he said." ‌ Elsewhere in the episode, it was a close call for Joel as he headed over to Ravi's house to find Avani. Of course, Ravi being Ravi, tried to go for Joel, but Priya warned him to stay away as it was "what he wants". But will Ravi found out about Joel's latest interaction with Avani and how will he react if he does?
