Time to turn tables, Broncos look for new ending against old playoff nemesis

The last two seasons have ended the same way for the Sam Houston Broncos softball team — at the hands of the St. Amant Gators.
The top-seeded Broncos (28-2) get another chance to reverse that trend when they play the three-time defending state champion No. 4 Gators (23-9) in the Non-select Division I semifinals in the state tournament at 5 p.m. today at North Frasch Park in Sulphur.
'We have to come out with energy because we know that they can perform well just like us,' Sam Houston senior third baseman Carolina Eidson said. 'Maybe we will be the ones to send them home this year.'
Eidson, and senior first baseman Aubrey Hobbs, are two of a handful of Broncos who experienced last year's loss to the Gators in the quarterfinals and the 2023 state finals.
'I feel like we run into them every year, but I think we will have it if we just play our game and don't make it bigger than it is,' Hobbs said.
St. Amant won 4-0 in 2023 and slipped by the Broncos 9-8 last season. Broncos head coach Beth Domingue described the 2024 meeting as feeling like a state tournament game.
'The crowd was really intense,' Domingue said. 'There was a lot of close plays. There was a lot of offense. I think everybody knew the importance of it.'
Recently, the Broncos have been doing everything right. They have won 26 consecutive games, and have an explosive offense and a strong pitcher in Kailyn Mire (27-2, 1.75, ERA) who has 13 shutouts. Sam Houston has crushed 55 home runs and scored 11.6 runs a game. Junior Aubrey Portie (14), sophomore Layla Landry (14) and Eidson (11) have more than 10 home runs apiece.
'I think we have performed very well offensively and defensively,' Hobbs said. 'I think that our lineup is stacked offensively.
'I think 1-9 all of them can hit. That is a plus. I think it is better than last year. Our lineup really hasn't changed. I think we have done an excellent job.'
Sam Houston run-ruled St. Amant 12-1 on March 26, but Domingue said she is not worried about her team becoming complacent.
'We haven't talked about that, but I think this is a bigger game on a bigger stage,' Domingue said. 'I think it's going to be a battle no matter what. I don't think we're worried about what we did a month ago or whatever it was because it obviously doesn't mean anything.'
The teams have met in the playoffs four times since 2013, and the victor has gone on to win a state championship each time. St. Amant won the state championship after beating the Broncos in 2023 and 2024. Sam Houston beat the Gators in the semifinals in 2013 and '15 on their way to the program's fourth and fifth state championships.
'They have a great program and great coaching staff, but it does seem like we always have to run into them,' Domingue said. 'I hate that we ended up on the same side of the bracket as them, just like last year. At least it was later down the line than last year. I think to be the best, you got to beat the best.'
This year's winner will take on the winner of No. 3 Dutchtown (24-9) and No. 7 Walker (22-8) in the finals at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Broncos predicted to take a step back in 2025
Broncos predicted to take a step back in 2025 The Denver Broncos took a huge step forward last season, reaching the NFL playoffs with a 10-7 record while starting a rookie quarterback. Many fans and pundits now expect the club to take another leap in 2025. Not everyone is confident the team will continue progressing, though. Touchdown Wire's Jarrett Bailey recently released his 2025 record predictions for each team, and he has the Broncos taking a step backward this fall. Bailey has predicted Denver will go 8-9, finishing behind the Los Angeles Chargers (9-8) and Kansas City Chiefs (14-3), above only the Las Vegas Raiders (8-9) in the AFC West. "Denver's defense will be one of the best in the league, but the offense will take a step back with a lack of top weapons," Bailey wrote for Touchdown Wire. It will be fascinating to track how that prediction ages in 2025 as quarterback Bo Nix enters his second season. Sean Payton's squad averaged 25 points per game in 2024, which ranked 10th in the NFL. Bailey expects two fewer wins and worse offensive production this year. Time will tell. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Broncos roster: S Talanoa Hufanga (No. 9) improves already-stout defense
Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fifth-year safety Talanoa Hufanga, No. 9. Before the Broncos: Hufanga was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round (180th overall) of the 2021 NFL draft, and he was thrust into action almost immediately. Hufanga saw action in 15 of 17 games in 2021, starting three games, recording 32 tackles (24 solo, eight assisted), one tackle for loss and one QB hit. Hufanga's best season as a pro came in 2022 when he started 17 games, earning a Pro Bowl selection and a first-team All-Pro nod after netting four interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown), two forced fumbles, nine pass deflections, two sacks, 97 total tackles (66 solo, 31 assisted) and five tackles for losses. In 2023 and 2024, Hufanga had his seasons cut short due to injury, although he managed to put together some strong stats in 2023. Before tearing his ACL in Week 11 of 2023, Hufanga collected three interceptions, three pass deflections, 52 total tackles (39 solo, 13 assisted), one tackle for loss and two QB hits. In 2024, Hufanga only started seven games, making 38 total tackles (20 solo, 18 assisted) and two tackles for loss before suffering various injuries that sidelined him on injured reserve. Broncos tenure: Hufanga departed the 49ers as an unrestricted free agent this spring, signing with the Broncos on a three-year deal worth up to $45 million. He is projected to start across from Brandon Jones in 2025. Chance to make the 53-man roster: Lock. The Broncos would not have brought in Hufanga, even with his injury-riddled history, if he were not going to be a starter. Hufanga will be a vital piece in a Denver defense that was near the top of the league in every defensive statistical category last year. Hufanga and fellow free agent signee Dre Greenlaw will help Denver's defense reach another level in 2025. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Selwyn Cobbo spotted in telling act with Adam Reynolds and family after axing
Selwyn Cobbo had every right to cut a dejected figure after being axed by Broncos coach Michael Maguire for their big win over the Gold Coast Titans in Adam Reynolds' milestone 300th game. After all, the match loomed as the final chance for Cobbo to impress Maroons coach Billy Slater and try to force his way back into Origin calculation for Game 2 in Perth on June 18. Cobbo could easily have gone into his shell and hidden away from the cameras, feeling a sense of injustice at being made a scapegoat for Brisbane's horror run of form in the lead-up to Saturday night's 44-14 victory. But the occasion belonged to Reynolds, who celebrated his special milestone surrounded by family, and Cobbo put on an impressive show of solidarity for his veteran teammate. The 23-year-old was spotted helping the team run through their warm-up drills before the game at Suncorp Stadium. And Cobbo appeared to be in good spirits after reportedly taking his demotion well. Maguire explained the decision to dump Cobbo and promote Josiah Karapani - who vindicated the coach's selection call with an impressive two-try haul. "As a group, and as a leadership group and as a coach, we're pushing standards here and expectations in how we're doing things, and Karapani's got his opportunity and Selly's got to look at a few things in his game," the Broncos coach said before the game. "(Karapani) has been really consistent in the way he's been playing through the pre-season ... and he's obviously experienced first grade. When he has played, he's played really well. I know he'll do a good job." The Broncos coach was spot-on as Karapani took his chance with both hands to further cloud Cobbo's future. The former Origin star is off-contract at the end of this season and the Broncos reportedly haven't tabled Cobbo a formal offer and appear to be prioritising the re-signing of centre Kotoni Staggs. Maguire was quick to stress that Cobbo could "definitely" force his way back into the side but a stint in reserve grade looms as the most likely scenario, at least in the short-term. In place of Cobbo on the wing, Karapani had 15 runs for 176 metres, as well as three tackle breaks and two line breaks in the two-try performance. The 23-year-old had only played 11 games in first grade before Saturday night but looked every bit an NRL player as he doubled his tally of NRL tries. What it means for Cobbo's future in Brisbane remains to be seen though and he could find it hard to break back into the Broncos' first team squad. He was also seen getting around his Broncos teammate's after their morale-boosting win, and posed for the team photo as Reynolds was joined by his family members after the game to mark the magical 300-game milestone. The night couldn't have gone much better for the Broncos - decked out in a striking all-black strip for the club's dedicated mental health round. Fullback Reece Walsh's spectacular return from injury also included a try-scoring double to spark Brisbane's attack. And while milestone man Reynolds was proud to join the NRL's 300-game club, it was the way the team bounced back to form that delighted him the most. "I'm more pleased with the performance," Reynolds said post-match. "I'm glad the week is over. It's been a big week with everything that comes with it. I'm honoured. I have always been about the team, it's something I will reflect on after a few beers." with AAP
