
Red Hat debuts Edge Manager for secure device fleet control
Red Hat has announced the technology preview of Red Hat Edge Manager, a new solution for overseeing large fleets of edge devices from a single management console.
The technology is designed to address the rising complexity and scale of edge computing environments, which often require efficient oversight of thousands of geographically dispersed devices. Red Hat Edge Manager aims to provide a centralised platform to streamline infrastructure and application management with particular attention given to security and operational resilience.
Edge computing environments typically involve a wide range of devices, including retail point-of-sale systems and industrial machinery located in remote or distributed settings. As organisations look to expand their use of edge devices, challenges related to connectivity, diverse hardware, operational complexity and cost arise. Red Hat has developed the new Edge Manager to address these with features for elasticity and enhanced control across edge deployments.
The solution offers a series of functions, including fleet management through policy-based deployment of applications and infrastructure. This supports both single-node and multi-node configurations, aiming to achieve scale and operational efficiency. Users can deploy desired state configurations and manage applications across large numbers of devices with automated rollouts and real-time visibility into progress and device health.
Red Hat Edge Manager also focuses on addressing the skills gap in IT staff at some edge locations by providing a more user-friendly and simplified management environment. It has been designed to allow organisations to manage their infrastructure without the need for specialised expertise typically associated with edge operations.
The product introduces proactive device insights, enabling the configuration and monitoring of device resources. Customisable alerts allow users to track resource utilisation, and metrics and logs can be captured to address issues effectively and maintain operational awareness.
Security is a central aspect of Red Hat Edge Manager. The solution uses mutual Transport Layer Security (mTLS) to enable encrypted and authenticated communication between agent services on devices and the central management console. This approach is intended to ensure a consistent security posture, preventing impersonation or unauthorised duplication of device identities through strict identity verification processes.
Customers are presented with flexible management options, including the possibility to perform on-premises management, which Red Hat says can provide comparable or greater value than cloud-based alternatives, depending on an organisation's requirements or deployment strategy.
A resilient agent-based architecture helps to ensure scalable device management. The system is built to maintain connectivity and control even under challenging network conditions, so complex network configurations should not be necessary to maintain oversight of managed devices.
Lifecycle management is included to enable secure onboarding and decommissioning of devices, as well as controlling operating system and application upgrades in a way that is designed to minimise disruption and security risk.
In terms of workload management, Red Hat Edge Manager is optimised for container-centric deployments, supporting container engines such as Podman and Docker, alongside Kubernetes orchestration. Red Hat also said support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux image mode is planned in future releases, further broadening deployment options across edge device fleets.
The technology preview of Red Hat Edge Manager allows users to evaluate its new features and capabilities as part of the Red Hat Device Edge portfolio as the company works towards broader availability.

The offering provides application and data flexibility by supporting VM migration to Kubernetes on multiple deployment environments, including on-premises infrastructure, public cloud, edge locations, and hybrid configurations, wherever Red Hat OpenShift is supported. Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Engine focuses on simplifying the deployment, management, and scaling of VM workloads. Its streamlined approach is combined with Portworx's enterprise-grade data management capabilities to assist customers in migrating and managing their VM applications on a unified platform. Red Hat brings OpenShift Virtualization preview to Azure users
Red Hat has launched the public preview of Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization on Microsoft Azure Red Hat OpenShift, giving organisations a new option for migrating and managing virtual machines in hybrid cloud environments. This release introduces Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization as a self-managed operator included with Azure Red Hat OpenShift. The solution is designed to streamline the migration of virtual machines from existing platforms to Azure Red Hat OpenShift, which supports both VM and container-based workloads. It targets organisations seeking to move away from legacy virtualization approaches and embrace a more flexible, scalable infrastructure. Chris Wright, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Red Hat, highlighted the importance of secure and adaptable infrastructure options for organisations undergoing digital transformation. "As organizations continue to modernize and move away from legacy virtualization solutions, it is critical to choose a secure computing foundation for the future that can adapt to their current and evolving multi-infrastructure environments. Building upon our extensive history of collaboration and joint engineering efforts with Microsoft Azure, Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization running on Azure Red Hat OpenShift delivers more consistent orchestration for VMs and containers alike, setting organizations on a clear path to modern application development and deployment," said Wright. Azure Red Hat OpenShift is a managed application platform jointly managed and supported by Red Hat and Microsoft. It aims to reduce the complexity associated with infrastructure management, allowing IT teams to concentrate resources on innovation and modernisation. The integration of OpenShift Virtualization supports hybrid applications by delivering a unified environment for both virtual machines and containers, facilitating cloud-native strategies and application modernisation efforts. Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization on Azure Red Hat OpenShift offers several capabilities. It helps organisations accelerate the migration and scaling of existing VM workloads with migration and automation tools, including Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management. These features aim to simplify migration, limit disruption, and enable faster moves onto modern infrastructure. The platform provides a unified view for operations that allows for seamless management of both VMs and containers across hybrid cloud environments. Automated deployment and management of Red Hat OpenShift clusters are intended to further reduce operational complexity and risk. OpenShift Virtualization enables customers to build, modernise, and deploy applications at scale using a Kubernetes-based approach. This move is positioned to hasten cloud-native modernisation goals. With the platform, organisations can utilise modern application development tools and processes for their VM-based applications, helping to bring legacy workloads up to date with current technology standards. The solution aims to optimise resources by improving DevOps productivity, decreasing application deployment time, and right-sizing VMs based on workload requirements. These features are intended to support efficiency and adaptation as organisations' needs continue to evolve. Brendan Burns, Corporate Vice President for Azure Compute at Microsoft, commented on the collaboration between Microsoft and Red Hat and emphasised its impact on organisations moving to the cloud. "As customers modernize and move their apps from traditional virtual-machine-based fabrics that are on-premises to modern Kubernetes platforms, some components still need to run on traditional virtual machines for a while. To address this, Microsoft and Red Hat are collaborating to bring open source innovation from the KubeVirt project into Azure Red Hat OpenShift. What I'm most excited about is how this enables customers to add virtualization capabilities to Azure Red Hat OpenShift, which allows them to modernize at their own pace, and get the best return on investment as they transition to the cloud," said Burns. Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization is immediately available in public preview as a self-managed operator on Azure Red Hat OpenShift. The offering permits organisations to apply their Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment and participate in the Azure Migration and Modernization Program, as well as leverage the Azure Hybrid Benefit to reuse existing on-premise licences for both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows. The public preview makes Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization available to organisations looking to modernise their critical VM infrastructure while building toward future cloud-native application development.

Red Hat & Oracle expand hybrid cloud capabilities on OCI
Red Hat and Oracle have announced an expanded collaboration focused on expanding hybrid cloud capabilities, including the general availability of Red Hat OpenShift on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and enhanced interoperability with Oracle applications and services. The partnership enables customers to access a more consistent, cloud-native foundation by extending Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift support across more Oracle deployment options, including government, sovereign and distributed cloud environments. Red Hat and Oracle highlighted the rising importance of hybrid cloud adoption, referencing a Gartner prediction that "90% of organizations will adopt a hybrid cloud approach through 2027, and the most urgent GenAI challenge necessary to address over the next year will be data synchronization across the hybrid cloud environment." The companies stated: "This makes the seamless availability of critical software across hybrid cloud environments a paramount need." The expanded support covers a range of security-sensitive and regulated computing environments. Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift now provide validated configurations for OCI, making them available for high-security government clouds and sovereign deployments that must comply with regional mandates. Red Hat OpenShift is now certified to run on OCI Roving Edge Infrastructure, Oracle Compute Cloud@Customer, and Oracle Private Cloud Appliance. This extends OpenShift's presence to a wider array of Oracle's cloud offerings. OCI customers can now operate Red Hat Enterprise Linux on both OCI Dedicated Region Cloud and Oracle Alloy. These services enable delivery of OCI's portfolio of over 200 artificial intelligence and cloud services within a customer's own datacentres. Oracle Alloy also allows customers to act as cloud providers by reselling OCI services to their end users. Additionally, Red Hat OpenShift now supports OCI Compute bare metal instances equipped with NVIDIA A100 and H100 GPUs. This capability increases the available options for organisations engaged in artificial intelligence and machine learning workload development, providing high-performance model training and inference facilities. Oracle has also started validating key Oracle applications and software—including Oracle WebLogic Server—to run as containers on Red Hat OpenShift. This initiative aims to create a jointly supported customer experience designed to unlock the potential of Oracle software running on the scalability and flexibility of Red Hat OpenShift, both on premises and in the cloud. The Oracle Cloud Scale Monetization portfolio, which includes a billing and revenue management suite, is now validated for Red Hat OpenShift. This is expected to provide communications service providers with greater infrastructure flexibility by enabling deployment of business support systems on OpenShift. Oracle Database, including Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), remains certified on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Red Hat has also launched a validation project focused on Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, supporting organisations that wish to deploy Oracle Database on OpenShift. Red Hat stated that it would review supported and common on-premises configurations, and offer guidance for deploying Oracle Database—including Oracle RAC where applicable—on OpenShift Virtualization.
