Malaysia approves RM11.62 bln in furniture projects as of March 2025

The Suna day ago
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,533 furniture projects worth RM11.62 billion have been approved as of March this year, according to Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong. He revealed that 62% of these investments were domestic, while 38% came from foreign sources.
The government continues to support the industry through the Market Development Grant (MDG), administered by MATRADE. Eligible companies receive RM25,000 for overseas trade promotions and RM5,000 for local events. Liew noted that 314 furniture firms have benefited from the MDG, with 4,148 applications approved—the highest among all sectors.
'From January 2021 to July 2025, MDG-assisted furniture companies generated RM1.46 billion in export sales,' he said during a Dewan Rakyat session. The grants disbursed to the sector total RM12.25 million.
Addressing concerns about foreign competition, Liew stated that while Malaysia imposes no restrictions on furniture sector investments, MIDA will no longer actively encourage foreign participation, particularly in labour-intensive projects. 'Malaysia's furniture industry is already globally competitive, and we aim to prioritise local growth,' he added. - Bernama

Govt to introduce New Investment Incentive Framework in third quarter to woo high-value investors

PETALING JAYA: The government will introduce a New Investment Incentive Framework (NIIF) in the third quarter of 2025 to promote high-value investments and activities. Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong said the NIIF is a major strategic step in response to the United States' decision to impose a 19% countervailing tariff on Malaysian goods under an executive order announced on Aug 1. 'This is to ensure that all investments deliver benefits such as quality employment for Malaysians and the development of local company ecosystems and technologies,' he said in a written reply to Tanjung Piai MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng in the Dewan Rakyat. The framework, to be developed by Miti in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, will set Malaysia in a new direction, aligning investment inflows with national development goals and long-term economic resilience. Liew said the recent US tariff revision was a complex and time-sensitive issue that the government had successfully negotiated down to 19%. 'The government is confident that the early measures implemented, along with well-structured mitigation planning, will reduce the negative impact of the United States' imposition of countervailing tariffs specifically on Malaysia,' the deputy minister noted. Liew said Malaysia's exports to the US made up 13.2% of the country's total exports in 2024, valued at RM1.508 trillion. To mitigate the tariff's impact, Miti and its agency, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, have been actively exploring non-traditional export markets and strengthening networks in emerging regions such as Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Asean. 'To position Malaysia as an indispensable middle player in the supply chain, the government is committed to enhancing the nation's resilience by advancing the growth of advanced local technology companies in strategic sectors such as semiconductors,' said Liew. He called for a shift in mindset as local small and medium enterprises and micro-enterprises must be seen as potential global players, not just support units for foreign multinationals. 'The government is committed to leading the transformation of local companies from being mere outsourcing producers labelled 'Made in Malaysia' to reaching the level of 'Made by Malaysia' with Malaysian technology,' he said. Liew pointed to the RM25 billion GEAR-uP programme under the Ministry of Finance as another key initiative to drive high-growth, high-value sectors, particularly semiconductors and the energy transition, while also empowering marginalised communities and nurturing local talent. To support this transformation, the government will study the possibility of strengthening localisation requirements for foreign investors to ensure that MSMEs benefit from the spillover effects of both domestic and international investments. The government believes these measures, especially the NIIF, will buffer Malaysia from future global trade shocks and elevate its status in global supply chains. On Aug 1, the US enacted a revised reciprocal countervailing tariff of 19% on imports from Malaysia, under an executive order by President Donald Trump. The rate was negotiated down from an initially proposed 25% and superseded the 24% tariff announced earlier in April. The negotiations began in early May and concluded on July 31, allowing Malaysia to preserve key policy prerogatives without compromising its sovereign 'red‑line' commitments. Malaysia now shares the 19% tariff rate with several major Asean economies, including Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia, placing it firmly in the mid-tier bracket within the region. Vietnam faces a slightly higher rate of 20%, while Brunei is subject to 25%, and Laos and Myanmar face steep duties of 40% each. Singapore, by contrast, remains on a base rate of 10%. Items currently excluded from the tariffs, such as semiconductors and pharmaceutical products, are also expected to face tariffs 'in the next week or so', according to Trump.

Madius proposes new national councils for economic coordination

Madius KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 6): Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau has urged the Federal Government to promptly fulfil Sabah's constitutional right to 40 per cent of net revenue collected from the state, while also calling for the establishment of three new national councils to strengthen coordination in critical economic sectors. Debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday, Madius stressed that the long-overdue revenue entitlement must be honoured in accordance with Article 112C and the Tenth Schedule of the Federal Constitution. 'Negotiations were already concluded in 1963 during the formation of Malaysia. As the generation entrusted with the legacy of the Malaysia Agreement 1963, we must now implement what was agreed. Why the delay?' he questioned. The UPKO Honorary President emphasised that this was not a new demand, but a constitutional right that remains unfulfilled, further warning that Sabahans must no longer be made to bear the brunt of poverty due to the continued failure to implement what is lawfully theirs. He noted that more than 80 per cent of the nation's RM1.3 trillion debt has been spent in Peninsular Malaysia, while Sabah, which contributes substantially to national revenue, continues to receive a disproportionate share of allocations. 'This disparity hampers Sabah's ability to develop key sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, livestock and basic infrastructure,' he said. 'If Sabah were given back the 40 per cent revenue as stated in the Constitution, we wouldn't have to keep begging for federal funds to build roads, hospitals, or develop our industries,' Madius added. He also cautioned that Malaysia's aspiration to become the world's 30th largest economy would remain a dream if the constitutional rights of Sabah continue to be sidelined. 'If Sabah prospers, Malaysia prospers. But if Sabah's rights continue to be denied, it is not only unjust, it also undermines the very foundation upon which Malaysia was formed. 'What we need is not more negotiations, but the political will to implement what is already enshrined in the Constitution, the highest law of the land,' he said. In the same debate, Madius also called for the immediate establishment of three national bodies – the National Agriculture Council, the National Fisheries Council and the National Livestock Council – to enhance coordination and policy coherence between the federal and state governments. He said the creation of these councils is crucial to align legislation, strategy, budgets and programme implementation, particularly in light of Sabah's autonomy in these sectors as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution and the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963. 'The aim is to close the development gap between regions, especially for Sabah, which has immense potential but remains left behind due to poor policy alignment and lack of federal support,' he stated. Citing examples, Madius said Sabah, despite being the largest fish producer in Malaysia contributing 25 per cent to national output, has only one fish landing facility built using state funds. 'In contrast, there are 42 such facilities in Peninsular Malaysia, five in Sarawak and one in Labuan, all developed by federal agencies such as the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM). Just imagine Sabah's potential if we received the proper budgetary support,' he remarked. In the livestock sector, Sabah has already achieved self-sufficiency in eggs and fresh milk but remains low in ruminant meat production. 'With vast and suitable land resources, Sabah could increase output significantly if strategic support and adequate funding are provided,' he said. Touching on agriculture, he noted that rice production in Sabah continues to lag due to inadequate irrigation systems, outdated drainage infrastructure, and a lack of processing facilities, all contributing to lower productivity compared to the Peninsula. Madius further reminded the Dewan Rakyat that the proposal to establish these three national councils had been included in Pakatan Harapan's 15th General Election manifesto, and urged the government to now honour that commitment. 'This is the right time for the government to act on this promise, to ensure national food security and promote equitable prosperity for all regions,' he said.

No need for new talks, just political will to implement MA63: Madius

Published on: Wednesday, August 06, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 06, 2025 Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau ( pic ) has urged the Federal Government to implement the 40 per cent revenue entitlement due to Sabah under Article 112C and the Tenth Schedule of the Federal Constitution without further delay. He reiterated the call while debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday. Advertisement Madius questioned why the agreed financial rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) remain unfulfilled despite being constitutionally guaranteed. The Upko Honorary President said Sabahans should not continue to suffer from underdevelopment and poverty due to the failure to deliver the promised revenue returns. He pointed out that more than 80 per cent of the country's RM1.3 trillion debt has been spent in Peninsular Malaysia, while resource-rich Sabah remains inadequately funded. The former Sabah Deputy Chief Minister stressed that Sabah could independently fund basic infrastructure and economic development if it received its rightful 40 per cent share. Advertisement He also questioned the status of proposed 12MP projects and the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on undocumented migrants in Sabah, which he said still lacked clear updates. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
