When the Light Breaks review — a simple, slow but beautiful Icelandic drama
This dreamy, wispy Icelandic grief drama might have been called The Other Woman had that title not already been taken by a cheesy Cameron Diaz rom-com. I'm also fond of The Ciggy Break, as so much of the film's emotional revelations occurs during the central character Una's pivotal smoking interludes — in front of corrugated iron doors, pebble-dashed walls and glass patio screens. Una (Elin Hall) is the so-called other woman, an art student who's having a secret affair with hipster musician Diddi (Baldur Einarsson) and who, as the film begins, is thrilled to discover that Diddi is just hours away from breaking up with his long-term girlfriend Klara (Katla Njalsdottir). Unfortunately, a fatal car accident, rendered in explosive detail (cue action movie fireball),

Glen Powell's ex Gigi Paris finally shares bombshell reaction to Sydney Sweeney affair rumors
Glen Powell 's ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris has finally revealed her bombshell reaction to his affair rumors with Hollywood bombshell Sydney Sweeney. Gigi, 32, and Glen, 36, were involved with each other for more than three years before it emerged in April 2023 that the relationship was over. Around that time, Glen and Sydney were promoting their romantic comedy Anyone But You when they were were hit with speculation they had an on-set romance - and deliberately played into the conjecture to drum up publicity for the movie. He freely admitted afterwards that the gambit 'worked wonderfully,' as the picture was a smash hit, and he added to the New York Times: 'Sydney is very smart.' However Gigi has now shared her side of the story, recalling that she was left 'blindsided' and 'shattered' when the romance rumors hit the headlines. Her A-list ex, whom she did not name, allegedly waved away her concerns by saying: 'This is what I have to do for my job,' she claimed on the podcast Too Much. has contacted representatives for Sydney and Glen for comment. Glen Powell's ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris has finally revealed her bombshell reaction to his affair rumors with his Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney; Glen and Sydney pictured in the film Gigi said that once she was faced with Glen's argument that the situation was a professional necessity, she 'had two options.' She explained: 'I could either pretend like I was going along with everything and have everyone wonder: 'Are they hooking up? Are they not hooking up? Is she okay with this? What the f***?' Or stand up for myself and say: 'No, I'm actually not okay with this, and I'm waking away.' So that's what I decided to do.' The Miami-born model insisted: 'It wasn't a way to monetize the breakup. It wasn't a way to twist the story around. I was shattered, shattered.' Gigi added: 'I just wanted respect. Especially if it's gonna be public, like don't make an a** out of me. Just don't make a fool out of someone you've been with for over three years, talking about forever with. Just have some decency, you know?' She claimed that for Glen, 'at the end of the day, it was like: 'Well, work comes first.' And if that's the case, power to you, that's your priority. I gotta walk away.' In her view, the situation was 'handled' improperly from a publicity standpoint and left her feeling 'like I was just fed to the dogs, like: "Good luck. You handle this."' Gigi decided to exit the relationship because 'I just hit a threshold of what I could take, and I was just so disappointed and that was that.' She shared that she 'flew across the world to look at him in the face and say: "I can't do this anymore," and was 'bawling' throughout the flight to Australia, where Anyone But You was predominantly filmed. Gigi also argued that Glen should have issued a public statement denying the affair and insisting that he was faithful to her. 'I know that I deserve a lot better, and I know that the bare minimum of any relationship is to have your partner's back, period,' she contended. 'Where are you when you just need to stand up and say: 'No, I would never cheat on my girlfriend. I wouldn't do that.' That's all that needed to be said.' She observed: 'Also it was serving them for their PR. Later on it turned out that it was all – I don't know if there was a relationship there or not, but then they came out to say it was all a PR scheme at the expense of our relationship.' Her feeling is that 'it was pretty obvious what was going on, and if people didn't really see what was going on, that's fine, but to me it was just like, whoa, that's pretty crazy, just to sell a movie – or not, who knows?' She said with a wan laugh: 'And I honestly hoped that they'd end up together, 'cause I was like, at least it would make it worth it for me. Hope they are in love or whatnot.' In the months after his split from Gigi, Glen said he gave Sydney 'all the credit' for using the affair rumors to fuel publicity for their picture. 'I don't have the mental capacity to pull anything like this off, but she's very smart. She's very smart,' the Hollywood Adonis remarked. 'I had such a wonderful journey with her on this thing. But in terms of actual dating and actually being together?' he added with a laugh to Business insider. He added that 'the only reason it made things harder for me to lean into that stuff was that I was going through a very real breakup amidst a promotional tour.' Glen maintained: 'I was with someone that I really loved and cared about and was trying to kind of make sense of a lot of stuff.' He noted that 'it was a lot easier for Sydney to lean into something like that because she's in a very committed and wonderful relationship and she's very happy.' At the time, Sydney, 27, was engaged to her longtime boyfriend Jonathan Davino, 41, whom she publicly confirmed her split from in May after months of breakup rumors. Sydney, who was an executive producer on Anyone But You, has stated that she 'was on every call' that involved promoting the film. 'I was in text group chats. I was probably keeping everybody over at Sony marketing and distribution awake at night because I couldn't stop with ideas.' The busty blonde bombshell dished: 'I wanted to make sure that we were actively having a conversation with the audience as we were promoting this film, because at the end of the day, they're the ones who created the entire narrative.'

‘Parenthood is messy': what it's really like to raise a child
Photographer Kirsten Lewis's book Unsupervised presents a raw, honest look at how some families navigate the challenges and joys of raising children. Spending between 24 and 72 hours documenting each family, over a period of 15 years, Lewis's intimate black and white photographs capture moments in the home lives of a variety of families. The images explore the fullness of parenting, from its sudden dramas to the quiet shared moments. Unsupervised by Kirsten Lewis is published by Daylight books Kirsten Lewis: 'One of my objectives when being invited into a family's home to photograph is to validate someone's worth by showing them how much they are loved. In my opinion, parenting is the hardest and most underappreciated job one can take on yet it's seemingly taboo to acknowledge this outwardly. Every single parent I have ever spoken to that has shared their struggles is not desiring a different life, just to simply be understood and hear that they are not alone' The trust between the families and Lewis is evidenced by the level of intimacy she was able to witness and capture with her camera. This project also questions the pressure of perfection widespread across all social media platforms with their carefully 'curated' windows into family life 'Imagine a world where families felt safe enough to live their lives free from the fear of judgment, criticism and inadequacy' 'I made this picture of my daughter when we were in a small village in Iceland back in 2019. She was jumping over puddles when she tripped over a small rock and fell, face first, into the wet pavement. Once I confirmed no teeth were lost and an ER trip was not necessary, I chose to make a picture. I like to lean into uncomfortable and hard moments rather than try to hide or ignore them. With Byrdie, I wanted to honour her brave and adventurous spirit. When I show her this picture she always recalls what happened with a sense of pride for getting through a 'really big fall'' 'It can be super hard, as parents, to be kind to ourselves. Between the unrealistic pressures we feel from the outside world and the harsh internal critics we hear inside our hearts daily, it's nearly impossible to step back and acknowledge all the positive impacts we have on our children. I am here to remind every parent that YOUR CHILDREN LOVE YOU' 'One of the ways I see this visually is how young humans watch and mirror their loved ones, especially parents. Due to the unending cycle of meal-making, dish-washing, laundry-folding, mess-cleaning, brawl-breaking, emotion-regulating, fear-alleviating and heart-tending it's quite easy to miss this. The ability to provide evidence of a child's admiration and adoration for their parents is one of the best gifts I can provide as a photographer' 'Life is messy. Parenthood is messy. Childhood is messy. To deny ourselves the freedom to share all the imperfections that come with being a human is not just harmful to ourselves but to humanity as a whole' 'I truly believe that the more we silence ourselves the more divided and disconnected our global community of family becomes. If everyone felt safe enough to share our messiness, giving and receiving the grace to be human would be so much easier' 'The role of parent is a complex one. While we do our best to always operate from our rational, reasonable, informed and prepared adult selves the truth is, the child inside of us surfaces regularly, especially during times of deep insecurity and fear. I think one of the most beautiful experiences in relationships is when we abandon our expected roles and simply show up as humans for our loved ones' Lewis has watched the effect of how parents share their life with the outside virtual world. Ultimately, this creates a feeling of isolation and loneliness, as parents are completely disconnected from the reality of their life and the tailored one online 'It is my hope that this project helps parents feel less alone, realising that their experience is shared with the global community of parents, to remind us all of how much more we are connected than divided' 'I've spent the last 15 years embedding myself into family life. I've dedicated thousands and thousands of hours observing, studying, relating to and learning from incredible parents and children from diverse communities around the world' 'At the very core of life, humans only want three things: to love, to be loved and to have a safe place to do so' 'At the heart of the human experience and what I believe we all inherently have a right to have safely and freely is relationship. Relationship to ourselves, each other and the world around us' 'My intention is that Unsupervised can serve as a bridge between strangers. When choosing which pictures would sit together on a page I intentionally chose to emphasise the idea that parents are not alone in their everyday lives' 'Ultimately my hope is that readers recognise themselves reflected back in the pictures of strangers, an overlap of shared experiences in childhood and parenthood' This photographic exploration is an attempt to reveal the similarities Lewis has witnessed by photographing her subjects' vulnerability, challenges, joy and hardships 'While the intention of this book has always been to give the global community of parents an opportunity to be seen, honoured and celebrated, this process has revealed something much more personal. At the end of the day, I created the book I needed'
