Ketamelon kingpin used ID cards sourced from darkweb for drugs trade

KOCHI: The kingpin behind Ketamelon, a darknet-based drug trafficking platform operating across India, procured identity cards from the darknet to ship LSD blots and ketamine, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has found.
The central agency has initiated steps to freeze the assets of the accused, believed to have been acquired through proceeds of crime.
NCB had earlier arrested Edison Babu, a resident of Muvattupuzha, along with Arun Thomas, after a probe revealed that Edison was operating the Ketamelon platform on the dark web.
Investigators found that Edison procured multiple government-issued ID cards, such as Aadhaar, PAN, and election IDs, from darknet marketplaces using cryptocurrency to book parcels for drug deliveries.
'There are several platforms on the darknet selling forged identification documents. The accused used these to book parcels anonymously, helping him evade detection if a consignment was intercepted,' said an NCB source.
The agency has also identified several individuals who were purchasing drugs via the Ketamelon platform.
'We have located some of them and they are currently under surveillance. A detailed probe is under way with assistance from our units in other states,' an official said.
Investigators found that Edison had dispatched over 600 parcels to customers in the past year alone. While the exact value of the illicit earnings is yet to be determined, as most transactions were conducted using Monero (XMR). This privacy-focused cryptocurrency conceals sender and receiver details.
'We interrogated both Edison and Arun for four days after securing their custody last week. However, more information needs to be gathered, and we will be seeking further custody from the court,' the official added.
The accused reportedly made significant investments and acquired properties in Ernakulam and Idukki districts. The authorities are now collecting detailed information on these assets to prevent further transactions.

FIR filed against 7 for harassing Kargil veteran's family over citizenship

The Pune police on Wednesday filed a first information report (FIR) against seven individuals and others for alleged unlawful assembly after a group of members belonging to a right-wing group barged into the house of a family of Kargil War veteran. According to the family, the mob forced its way into the residence around midnight, abused the occupants, and insisted on identity verification. (MAHENDRA KOLHE/ HT) The police action came a day after the war veteran's family in Pune alleged that a mob of around 80 individuals, allegedly affiliated to a right-wing group, forcibly entered their home in Chandannagar late Saturday night and accused them of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. The group allegedly demanded Aadhaar cards and other documents to prove their Indian citizenship. According to the family, the mob forced its way into the residence around midnight, abused the occupants, and insisted on identity verification. Some members of the group allegedly claimed the family's documents were fake, despite being shown valid Aadhaar cards. Women and children were also allegedly coerced to produce ID documents. Irshad Shaikh, 48, whose elder brother Hakimuddin Shaikh served in the Indian Army during the Kargil War, said that their family has lived in Pune for over six decades. 'We tried to explain that our family has deep roots here, and several of us have served in the armed forces, but they continued hurling accusations,' he said. He alleged that two men in plainclothes identified themselves as police personnel but did not intervene while the group harassed the family. After being taken to the Chandannagar Police Station, the family claims they were made to wait by officials for hours and told to return the next day or risk being declared 'Bangladeshi nationals'. 'We met Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Wednesday and explained him chain of events and how our family was harrassed and intimidated by a group of people. He assured us that stringent action is being taken against anti-social elements,' said Irshad after visiting the police commissionerate. He claimed that the family has all valid documents to prove citizenship. 'If necessary, we can trace our citizenship back 400 years,' he said, adding that multiple family members had served in the army across various wars. Kumar said an FIR has been registered under sections related to unlawful assembly. 'On receiving a call about suspected Bangladeshi nationals, police found people raising slogans outside the house. The mob's actions are under scrutiny, and based on fresh statements, more sections may be added or a separate FIR may be filed,' he said. On the family's claim that police in civvies stood by during the incident, Kumar said most personnel were in uniform but did not rule out the possibility that some were in plainclothes. He added that the family's documents were verified and found to be in order. The family has sought support from social activists and lawyers, who accompanied them to a meeting with the police commissioner on Wednesday evening, demanding strict action against those involved. Hakimuddin, now living in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, said, 'It's disheartening that a family with a history of military service has to face such humiliation. If required, I'll personally speak to the authorities to seek accountability.'

Delhi Police called Malda woman ‘torture' video ‘fabricated', she reiterates charge at TMC presser

Days after Delhi Police rebutted the claims of assaulting a woman from Malda, calling it 'fabricated' and 'politically motivated', the TMC on Wednesday presented the woman, identified as Sajnu Parveen, at a press conference in Kolkata, where she reiterated her charges against the Delhi Police. At the TMC press meet, Sajnur Parveen recounted the alleged incident and said she was falsely accused of being a Bangladeshi, taken to a secluded location, tortured along with her child, and extorted by four people posing as Delhi Police personnel. 'Two men and two women, identifying themselves as Delhi Police personnel, first raided our house on July 25, checked our Aadhaar cards, and searched for my husband, who was out for work then. They called us Bangladeshis, although we kept telling them we were from West Bengal and showed them our Aadhaar cards,' Parvin alleged. 'They returned the next day, took us to a secluded location, and asked us to chant 'Jai Shri Ram'. I told them I am a Muslim and refused. They slapped me and kicked me in my belly. They also assaulted my child… They then asked me for Rs 25,000,' she said at the press meet attended by Cabinet Minister Firhad Hakim and TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh. TMC Rajya Sabha members Samirul Islam and Mausam Benazir Noor, she said, helped her to come to Kolkata. Rejecting the Delhi Police charge that the video of her with her bruised one-and-a-half-year-old child was 'staged', Parveen accused the Delhi Police of releasing partial CCTV footage, claiming it didn't capture where she was picked up and taken to before being assaulted. The woman also accused the Delhi Police personnel of forcing her to sign papers, taking away her mobile phone, and not allowing them to meet anyone. After West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted the video on her X handle alleging that police in the national capital did not spare even a child whose mother tongue is Bangla, the Delhi Police rejected the charge, claiming that 'the so-called assault video of the family was falsely created by a relative who acted on instructions from a political leader based out of Malda district.' 'When we questioned both the husband and wife, they told us that she had lost her way back home. They later concocted the story after the husband's uncle – who is a political worker in TMC – told them to,' a senior Delhi Police officer had said. BJP MP from Kanthi, Soumendu Adhikari, then filed a police complaint in Delhi, demanding an FIR against the chief minister for deliberately disseminating a 'false, fabricated, and communally charged video' with the intent to malign the image of the Delhi Police and incite public discontent. The TMC supremo, however, doubled down, saying the family was being threatened. On Wednesday, TMC leaders filed a complaint against the Delhi Police at the Pragati Maidan police station in Kolkata. 'Attempts are being made to silence the family only after Mamata Banerjee protested. The video of the place where the child and his mother were beaten was not released. Instead, the family was detained and blackmailed to extort money. It was said that Bangla means Bangladeshi. They said they were residents of Malda, West Bengal, but they were not spared either,' said TMC leader Ghosh. 'The CM has done the right thing by speaking up. The victim's ordeal proves that the CM's claim was true,' Hakim said. Reacting to the woman's latest charges, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and BJP MLA from Nandigram, Suvendu Adhikari, said: 'Those who brought them (the woman and her family members) here will have to face consequences.'

Malda migrant worker's family backs Mamata claim of harassment by Delhi police

Family members of the migrant worker who had alleged harassment and torture by the Delhi police on Wednesday returned to West Bengal and held a press conference in Kolkata claiming that they were referred as 'Bangladeshis' and asked to pay ₹25,000 by the men posing as police personnel. Sanjur Parveen and other members of the family who hails from Chanchal in Malda district of West Bengal held a press conference at the Trinamool Congress party office in Kolkata and said that the personnel of Delhi police asked her to chant 'Jai Shri Ram. Several leaders of Trinamool Congress including chairperson of West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam, party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh and, State's Minister Firhad Hakim, Rajya Sabha MP Mausam Noor were among the leaders who were present at the press conference. 'Four people came to our house and they introduced themselves as police. They wanted to see our Aadhaar cards. They referred to us as Bangladeshis and said that we should not leave the area. We told them that we are not Bangladeshi but Indians,' Ms. Parveen said. She added that the next day four others came with two women and tried to take my child away. 'There I was asked to say 'Jai Shri Ram'. I said, I am a Muslim. I cannot say that. After that, they demanded ₹25,000 from me,' Ms. Parveen said. The Malda resident added that she along with her child were assaulted. The press conference by the family of migrant workers assumes significance as the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had on July 27 shared a 46-second video on social media and accused Delhi police of brutally beating up a kid and his mother, who are members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. The Delhi police said that the video shared by the Chief Minister about migrant workers alleging harassment in the national capital was fabricated. DCP(East) Abhishek Dhania, the Delhi Police officer, said the woman, identified as Sanjanu Parveen, made the video at the request of his relative, who lives in the Malda district of West Bengal and is a political worker. After the Delhi police statement, the West Bengal Chief Minister on Tuesday doubled down on her assertion on Tuesday and urged the family to return to the State. Reacting to the press conference of the migrant workers family, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said that the Trinamool Congress should lodge a complaint against the Delhi police. The contending claims come at a time when hundreds of migrant workers from West Bengal have alleged harassment and torture at the hands of police on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals in different States including Delhi. In a related development, the Trinamool Congress claimed that 300 migrant workers have returned to the State from Haryana. '300 migrant workers, men and women, were forced to flee Haryana and return to Bengal to escape @BJP4India's xenophobic witch-hunt. @NayabSainiBJP's police raided their homes, called them 'Bangladeshi', threw them in detent ion, and brutalised them despite valid documents proving their Indian citizenship,' the Trinamool Congress tweeted. The West Bengal's ruling party described the BJP government as a 'fascist regime weaponizing state power to humiliate Bengalis'. '@BJP4India will pay for every baton blow, every racial slur, every illegal detention. The countdown to their downfall has begun, and Bengal will lead the charge,' the party added.
