Trump eyes US government stakes in other chip makers that received CHIPS Act funds, sources say

Cherney WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is looking into the federal government taking equity stakes in computer chip manufacturers that receive CHIPS Act funding to build factories in the country, two sources said. Expanding on a plan to receive an equity stake in Intel in exchange for cash grants, a White House official and a person familiar with the situation said Lutnick is exploring how the U.S. can receive equity stakes in exchange for CHIPS Act funding for companies such as Micron, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and Samsung. Much of the funding has not yet been dispersed. Aside from Intel, memory chipmaker Micron is the biggest U.S. recipient of CHIPS Act cash. TSMC declined comment. Micron, Samsung and the White House did not respond to requests for comment. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Tuesday that Lutnick was working on a deal with Intel to take a 10% government stake. "The president wants to put America's needs first, both from a national security and economic perspective, and it's a creative idea that has never been done before," she told reporters. While Lutnick said earlier on CNBC that the U.S. does not want to tell Intel how to run its operations, any investment would be unprecedented and ramps up a new era of U.S. influence on the big companies. In the past, the U.S. has taken stakes in companies to provide cash and build confidence in times of economic upheaval and uncertainty. In a similar move earlier this year, Trump approved Nippon Steel's purchase of U.S. Steel after being promised a "golden share" that would prevent the companies from reducing or delaying promised investments, transferring production or jobs outside the U.S., or closing or idling plants before certain time frames, without the president's consent. The two sources said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is also involved in the CHIPS Act discussions, but that Lutnick is driving the process. The Commerce Department oversees the $52.7 billion CHIPS Act, formally known as the CHIPS and Science Act. The act provides funding for research and grants for building chip plants in the U.S. Lutnick has been pushing the equity idea, the sources said, adding that Trump likes the idea. The U.S. Commerce Department late last year finalized subsidies of $4.75 billion for Samsung, $6.2 billion for Micron and $6.6 billion for TSMC to produce semiconductors in the U.S. In June, Lutnick said the department was re-negotiating some of former President Joe Biden's grants to semiconductor firms, calling them "overly generous". He noted at the time that Micron offered to increase its spending on chip plants in the U.S.

The 48-year-old mom explains that she works full-time as a nurse and is often exhausted, but still manages to keep her home in order. 'Not a mansion or anything but it's clean and it's mine and I like my peace,' she writes. She says her younger son, 16-year-old 'Jake,' had a couple of friends over one evening when the situation unfolded. The group of teenagers was in the living room 'playing xbox or whatever, eating chips and yelling like usual,' according to the mom. After a long day at work and another shift scheduled for the morning, she asked the boys around 10:30 p.m. to keep the volume down. 'I didn't yell, I just said 'Hey guys, can we turn it down a little?' Real casual,' she explains. The teens agreed, but just a few minutes later, she overheard one of Jake's friends mocking her request. She recalls hearing 'Liam,' one of the guests, say loudly, 'Bro, your mom's being a buzzkill tonight.' The remark was followed by laughter, which left her stunned in her bedroom. 'I just kinda laid there like... really? In my house??' she shares. Feeling disrespected, she decided to step in and address the situation directly. The mom walked back into the living room and called the boy out. 'Liam, you're a guest in my house. If asking you to be respectful is too much, maybe you don't need to be here tonight,' she says she told him. She admits she might have sounded harsh but stands by her decision. 'He looked all awkward and mumbled a sorry, and I said 'yeah alright, I think it's time to head out,' ' she recalls. Her son didn't say anything at the time, but later confronted her. Jake accused his mother of embarrassing him and claimed she kicked out his friend 'for no reason.' The interaction has left her feeling conflicted. 'I'm sitting here wondering if I was too harsh,' she writes, noting that she may have been 'too on edge' after a tiring day. At the same time, she feels the disrespect in her own home was unacceptable. 'Like yeah maybe I could've let it slide, but also — it's my damn house?? I'm not gonna be disrespected like that just cause I asked for some quiet,' she says. Unsure whether she overreacted, the mother posted her story to Reddit to seek an outside perspective. She asked strangers if she went too far in asking her son's friend to leave. One commenter immediately assured her she was not at fault. 'Your son should have asked his friend to respect your need for rest when he rudely mouthed off about not being able to do what he wanted in someone else's home. NTA,' the person wrote. The commenter went on to defend her response as justified. 'I would have a chat with your son about what it's like to work all day in your job. We kids respected what they were doing for us,' they added. The mom seemed relieved by the support and responded with understanding. 'Thanks.. I'll talk to him. Maybe there's some a------ness on both sides,' she admitted. For her, the situation was never about spoiling her son's fun but about protecting her peace and boundaries at home. Don't buy claims Trump runs a White House MAGA gift shop
In August 2025, after European leaders joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine, a photo circulated that social media users claimed (archived, archived) depicted Trump showing Zelenskyy and France's President Emmanuel Macron his White House Make America Great Again gift shop. The photo showed Trump, Zelenskyy, Macron and an unidentified man in front of a shelf of neatly arranged hats and other items. The hats bore slogans including "Make America Great Again," "Trump 2028," "4 More Years" and "Gulf of America." "Make America Great Again" was a term popularized by Trump during his first and second presidential election campaigns. One X user whose post had more than 600,000 views at the time of this writing posted the photo with the caption, "Embarrassing….Trump showed Zelenskyy and Macron his MAGA gift shop at the White House" (X user @WUTangKids) The claim that the photo depicted Trump showing off a gift shop also circulated on Facebook (archived), Threads (archived), Instagram (archived) and Bluesky (archived). Snopes readers wrote in to ask if the claim was true. The photo of Trump, Zelenskyy and Macron was authentic and originally posted (archived) to X by Margo Martin, one of Trump's communications advisers. Martin identified Macron, who stood with his back to the camera in the photo. However, we found no evidence to support the accompanying claim that hat Trump was running a MAGA gift shop out of the White House. It was unclear where exactly Martin took the photo, though official photographs from the Aug. 18, 2025, meeting indicated that the leaders met at the White House. The Trump Organization, Trump's business managed by his sons Eric and Donald Jr., has an online merchandise store as of this writing that sells some of the items seen in Martin's photo, though the company does not appear to have a White House branch. The White House does have an official gift shop that supports injured Secret Service members and charitable causes. That shop does not sell hats like the ones seen in Martin's photo. Snopes contacted the White House to ask if Martin's photo showed a MAGA gift shop inside the White House as social media users claimed, and we await a reply. The Aug. 18, 2025, meeting with European leaders and Zelenskyy was not the first time Trump showed off the collection of merch to guests visiting the White House. Trump hosted Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House on Aug. 8, 2025, as the pair signed a joint declaration of peace in the long-running conflict between the countries. Shortly thereafter, a video (archived) circulated online that featured Trump showing off the same collection of merch from Martin's photo to Aliyev. In the footage, Trump handed one item to Aliyev saying it was "for your wife." After showing off his "Trump 2028" and "4 More Years" hats, Trump gestured toward the video recorder and said, "Fellas, grab what you want, it's OK." The video from Aliyev's visit appeared to indicate that Trump kept a stock of his merch to give to guests as gifts rather than to run an official store. "Trump 2028" and "4 More Years" were references to Trump's previous indications that he would like to run for a third term despite the Constitution's 22nd Amendment that barred any person from being "elected to the office of the President more than twice." Trump told NBC in March 2025 that "A lot of people want me to do it," referring to running for a third term and that "There are methods which you could do it." During a CNBC interview on Aug. 6, 2025, Trump said he would "probably not" run again though "I'd like to." Trump further told Aliyev on Aug. 8, 2025, while holding a "Trump 2028" hat, "Everybody wants me to run." "45 | 47 Collection."
