Govt to file review petition in SC for Mahadevi's return to Jain mutt: CM
Devendra Fadnavis
said on Tuesday that state govt will file a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking the return of the elephant, Mahadevi alias Madhuri, to the Jain mutt at Kolhapur's Nandani village.
Fadnavis convened a meeting with the Jain mutt's top office-bearers and representatives. Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, forest minister Ganesh Naik, along with ministers Chandrakant Patil, Girish Mahajan, Hasan Mushrif, Prakash Abitkar, and other MLAs and MPs attended the meeting.
Addressing the meeting, Fadnavis said, "The elephant has been in Nandani mutt for the past 34 years. Keeping public sentiment in mind, state govt will file a reconsideration petition.
The mutt should also include the state govt in its petition. Also, a separate detailed stand will be presented in the Supreme Court on behalf of the forest department. In this, all the issues suggested by the Central Zoo Authority and the high-level committee will be resolved.
"
"State govt will form a team, including a doctor to take care of the elephant, and provide all necessary assistance. If necessary, arrangements like a rescue centre will be made and facilities will be provided accordingly.
A request will also be made in this petition through the state govt to appoint an independent committee by the Supreme Court to investigate these matters. Efforts will be made to bring Mahadevi elephant back to the mutt through the legal process," added Fadnavis.
After the meeting, former MP Raju Shetti said, "If Madhuri was fit before shifting her as per the eight different medical reports, then how come she became physically unfit after reaching the Gujarat facility in 48 hours? How did she get multiple fractures? Elephants from the North East were also brought to Vantara after travelling 3000 km.
An elephant from Vita in Sangli was taken to Vantara three years ago. What is its condition now? Three other mutts in the border villages of Karnataka have also received notices from the forest department.
"
MLC Satej Patil said, "If govt, and more specifically the forest department, puts forward the case properly, then only we will be able to bring our elephant back. The govt has taken a positive stand for the elephant, and we welcome it."
Meanwhile, the chief of Jain mutt, Jinsen Bhattarak Pattacharya, said, "CM Devendra Fadnavis has assured us that they will support us in this case."
The Bombay HC, responding to petition by Peta, ordered the rehabilitation of the elephant from the Nandani mutt to an elephant welfare centre operated by Vantara Trust in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The mutt appealed to SC against this directive, but following the dismissal of the petition, the elephant was relocated to Jamnagar on July 29. Since then, the issue has sparked a highly emotional and politically charged campaign across Kolhapur and neighbouring districts, including border areas of Karnataka, advocating for the elephant's return to Nandani.

Banke Bihari temple: HC to hear the matter on Aug 26
Prayagraj: In the matter related to creating government trust to control and supervise Mathura's Banke Bihari temple through 'The Uttar Pradesh Shri Banke Bihari Ji Temple Trust Ordinance, 2025', the Allahabad high court has fixed August 26 for the next hearing. On Wednesday, when matter was taken up before the bench of Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal, the court was informed that the petition challenging the validity of Ordinance is pending before the Supreme Court. At this, the court adjourned the hearing and fixed August 26 for the next hearing. Though the hearing was adjourned, Justice Agrawal asked UP additional advocate general Manish Goyal that it would be proper to get the Ordinance amended for the part which calls for the inclusion of bureaucrats in the proposed trust. The court was of view that by way of the Ordinance in question, the government wants to put a control over the temple, which cannot be permitted as it is in violation of Article 25 of the Constitution. The court was of the view that the state can control external management, but it would not be proper to put an IAS officer in trust.

Omar writes to all political parties for J&K's statehood, calls it ‘essential course correction'
SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has written to all national parties, including BJP, asking for restoration of statehood to J&K. The CM said in his letter that a bill should be brought in the current session of Parliament for restoration of statehood. 'The restoration must not be viewed as a concession but as an essential course correction, one that prevents us from sliding down a dangerous and slippery slope where the statehood of our constituent states is no longer regarded as a foundational and sacred constitutional right but reduced instead to a discretionary favour bestowed at the will of the central govt,' Omar wrote in his letter. On Aug 5, 2019 the Centre had nullified the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution and reorganised J&K state into two Union Territories — J&K UT and Ladakh UT. The Supreme Court had on Dec 11, 2023 upheld govt's decision nullifying Article 370 but had observed that J&K's statehood should be restored as soon as possible. National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah supported Omar's letter, saying Congress has convened a meeting of all opposition leaders in New Delhi on Thursday and that he would discuss the issue there. The opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) welcomed Omar's letter 'for a collective push toward restoring statehood to J&K'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ranked: The 25 Best Cities To Live In The World Learn More Undo However, PDP said it was concerned about the 'selective focus on statehood'. 'The party wholeheartedly supports the call for statehood and stands ready to back any meaningful initiative that fulfils promises made to the people in Parliament, public forums, and before the Supreme Court, but it is disheartening to see that NC, under CM Omar Abdullah's leadership, has not demonstrated equal urgency or clarity on the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status,' PDP said. Dr Abdullah dismissed PDP's concerns and said it was PDP that had brought BJP to J&K by allying with it in 2015. Omar argued in his letter that federalism is anchored in the recognition of a state's right to exist and function with dignity, autonomy, and constitutional protection. 'If the Union were to assume and exercise the unilateral authority to downgrade a state to a UT, regardless of the justification it would mark a fundamental departure from the constitutional scheme. The circumstances may vary, but the precedent it sets is profound and unsettling. This is a constitutional red line, one that must never be crossed,' the letter said. 'It (statehood to J&K) is an issue that goes beyond regional interests and touches the very core of India's constitutional values and democratic ethos. The act of reducing J&K from a state to a Union Territory in 2019 and the prolonged delay in restoring its status as a full state, you would agree, has profound implications for the future of Indian polity.' On July 16, senior Congress politicians Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi had written a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi pressing for restoration of J&K's statehood and had urged govt to introduce legislation in the current Monsoon Session of Parliament to restore statehood to J&K and grant constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule to the UT of Ladakh.
