County schools benefit from ‘Helping Schools' car tag program

Members of the Calhoun County Board of Education were spreading the word about the Alabama Helping Schools car tag program.
The Helping Schools tag is an additional $25 on top of the annual fees and taxes, and each year afterward it costs $20. Out of that, $16.50 goes to the designated school.
During the 2023-24 school year, for instance, participants in the Helping Schools program raised $1,683 for Weaver High School, $1,534 for Alexandria High and $1,485 for Saks High. Other schools that raised more than $1,000 were White Plains High ($1,402), Ohatchee High ($1,320), Wellborn High ($1,138), Saks Elementary ($1,187), Alexandria Elementary ($1,072) and Pleasant Valley High ($1,006).
Tracy Brazier, the principal at Weaver High School, was unaware his school raised the most money through the Helping Schools program. However, he was pleased.
'We are a family-oriented community and very supportive of the school,' Brazier said at the Jan. 16 meeting. 'The money does help us out in our general fund. We are not a Title 1 school, so we rely on fundraising, and we greatly appreciate the community's support.'
'Anything that will help us improve teaching or learning,' said Derek Cobb, the principal at Alexandria High School. 'It's always a good thing to get that money and use it. We purchase classroom supplies, materials and resources.'
The total raised for all the Calhoun County System's schools in 2023-24 was $17,406 which includes almost $300 from people living in other counties.
'We board members would really appreciate the support and we know the teachers would. It helps all students,' Boardmember Mike Almaroad said.

Superintendent Tony Willis urged residents to take part in a survey that asks each person to choose the priorities they wish for the board address. He expressed his hope that everyone in the county would take the survey even if they have no direct interest in the schools.
'We are embarking on a five-year- strategic plan for our district. This is not Tony Willis's plan or any of these seven men on the board's plan, but it asks what does the community want? What are our goals and what do people expect from our schools? The only way to really get that is to get feedback from our people,' Willis said.
The seven-question survey asks each participant to prioritize different aspects of education, such as athletics, academics, career preparation, etc.
One question asks: 'What are the greatest challenges or issues our school system will face in the next five years in order to provide a quality education for all students?', while another asks, 'What should the financial priorities be for our school system over the next five years? '
The survey can be found at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NQ9FM5K
Weaver Elementary School will get a new roof
The board said it would replace Weaver Elementary's roof with funds from Alabama's Advance & Technology Fund.
'The A&T money is additional money we get in some years and can be used on capital projects,' Willis said. 'Anytime we can use state funds to repair our facility and make the environment better for our students, I am pleased to do so.'

21 trees planted at Weaver High School to celebrate Arbor Day in Hartford

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Twenty-one trees were planted at Weaver High School in Hartford on Friday to celebrate Arbor Day. Volunteers from Operation Fuel and the Connecticut Green Bank joined KNOX and the City of Hartford as a part of the Capital Forest Stewardship Initiative to plant 250 trees across the city this year and hundreds more over the next few years. The Arbor Day Foundation recognized Hartford as an official 'Tree City' 30 years ago. 'Our work today showcases the power of trees to connect the people across our community,' explained KNOX Executive Director Patrick Doyle. 'Together, apprentices, volunteers, residents, and community leaders are expanding access to the benefits that trees provide to everyone in Hartford.' 'This is really serious. Trees in a city like Hartford can make a huge impact,' said Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam. 'We know that as a city. We know on hot days the impact the tree canopy can have on heat islands. It can make an impact…a significant tree canopy of 10 to 20 degrees Over the next four years, 1000 trees are hoped to be planted. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Raising money for students in need

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A fundraising effort to benefit the Title 1 schools in the Sioux Falls School District has wrapped up for another year. Operation Hope & Caring raises money each school year to benefit students in Sioux Falls most affected by poverty. 'If we weren't able to provide that, I think there were a lot of kids that would go without and that hurts you as an adult to see kids having to struggle like that,' Levo Credit Union Vice President of Marketing and Business Development Jen McKeown said. Operation Hope & Caring has provided more than $109,000 in assistance since 2017, and will add nearly $19,000 to that total this year. 'This is the second highest amount that we have raised for Operation Hope & Caring even though the Storm didn't have a season,' McKeown said. Levo Credit Union started Operation Hope & Caring alongside the Sioux Falls Storm, and last year raised a record $20,000. Helping sexual assault survivors through hygiene drive 'I was a little anxious when we started out the fundraising because the Storm had just announced that they were not going to be able to have a season. But they stepped up and wanted to help anyway, so they donated the use of Air Madness for a fundraiser that raised over $10,000 for Operation Hope & Caring,' McKeown said. 'It's very nice for us to be able to share with our families that our community cares about them enough to donate money that we can use when a family is in need,' Garfield Elementary Principal Kristin Skogstad said. Skogstad said the school uses the dollars to stock its care cabinet. 'There are sometimes when families have come in and expressed a need for food or we have toilet paper, infant formula, we have laundry soap,' Skogstad said. The school also washes clothes for kids who don't have access to laundry facilities. 'We were able to purchase a washer and dryer several years ago with some of the money from Operation Hope & Caring, and our lovely clerical do at least one load of laundry a day,' Skogstad said. Skogstad says Operation Hope & Caring helps empower the kids to feel good about themselves. 'They'll come with that big person burden of knowing they don't have anything in their cupboards at home and so they'll come and shop and take what their family needs, and on the outside it says 'take what you need',' Skogstad said. Helping students get a leg up. Levo Credit Union partnered with Air Madness and KELOLAND Media Group on Operation Hope & Caring this year, and presented the check for nearly $19,000 to the school district at Monday's school board meeting. Vigo County schools add new pre-K programs as enrollment begins April 1

The Vigo County School Corp. is adding pre-K programs for 3- and 4-year-olds and two new locations for the 2025-26 school year. Enrollment for pre-K begins April 1. "We are super excited as we begin this new enrollment period that we have additional programs to offer," said Teresa Stuckey, VCSC director of elementary education. The district's pre-K programs are Paths to Quality Level 3. "We know that the early years of a child's life are very critical in their learning and we want to offer those programs that will give them the best chance for success," Stuckey said. The district is offering six new pre-school classes, three for 3-year-olds and three for 4-year-olds. The new locations are Fayette Elementary and Sarah Scott Middle School. The district will offer a class for 3-year-olds and a class for 4-year-olds at Fayette Elementary. At Sarah Scott Middle School, it will offer two 4-year-old classes and a 3-year-old class. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. "It's really important to get on that right away," Stuckey said. Full day pre-K is $21 per day and is weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; it follows the VCSC calendar. Half-day pre-K is from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. or noon to 2:40 p.m. and follows the VCSC calendar; the cost is $10.50 per day. Many families will qualify for CCDF, or the Child Care and Development Fund for 3-year-olds, or On My Way pre-K vouchers for 4-year-olds to pay their tuition. According to Stuckey, families in Title 1 districts who apply, but do not qualify for CCDF or On My Way pre-K, may qualify for a Title 1 waiver. Children must turn age 3 or 4 by Aug. 1. New student enrollment also opens April 1 for students in kindergarten through grade 12. "We really are looking for those kindergarten parents to get enrolled by no later than April 30," Stuckey said. That will ensure that as the schools plan their parent visits and send out communication, parents of new kindergarten student will receive those communications.
