Young tennis player plans to top his rankings by years end

The Citizen4 days ago
With his goals for the year set on increasing both his Tennis South Africa (TSA) and Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, Constantine Covery is ready to take on what these goals inevitably require of him.
Though this De La Salle Holy Cross College matric learner may see it as a challenge that he started tennis late, about five or six years after everyone else, it's his zeal for the game that is sure to see him break point against any server.

Constantine's best part of training has to be the physical intensity of it and being outside. 'I also love the friends I train with. They are some of my closest friends.'
His typical, weekly training programme is five, one-hour strength and conditioning sessions, followed by an hour and a half squad session, with one private session a week for an hour. He'll also to try play sets with his friends twice a week.
All that training leads to matches. He finds he mentally prepares for these by keeping things very simple and following a routine. 'I focus on my breathing and stick to the game plan. Physically, I warm up very well, with a hitting session before my match with priority being on feeling the ball well.'
When it comes to the sport, outside of loving watching the skill and intensity at which his idol, former professional tennis player Rafael Nadal, plays at, he loves the mental and physical aspects of it. 'I am competitive, so I enjoy the competition at tournaments. I also love the aspect of skill, as it's not all about power, strength, speed, or endurance.'
Though he knows that, as a junior, he lacks the experience of some of counterparts, as he started playing years after them, he has faith he can overcome whatever challenge this threatens to impose, through training as hard as he can, and playing as many tournaments as he is able.

From Royal AM to Highlanders AM? Mama Joy awaits MaMkhize's call

Waiting Royal AM superfan "Mama Joy" Chauke says she's waiting to hear from Shauwn Mkhize about her membership to become a Mbabane Highlanders AM supporter. Photo: Instagram Image: Instagram What does the future hold for Royal AM superfan Mama Joy Chauke now that the club have been kicked out of the PSL after owner Shauwn Mkhize's financial misgivings? South Africa's favourite super fan says for now, she's waiting to get word from MaMkhize about the KwaZulu-Natal club's future. "I'm still with Royal AM. We are just waiting for her to give us the green light to follow her there, otherwise, I will remain a Royal AM supporter until she announces that Royal AM is no more," Mama Joy said on Sunday, according to KickOff. "She will inform us if we can support Highlanders. They must treat her well because, as their president, she will attend every game. Next Stay Close ✕ "Yesterday, I spoke with MaMkhize, and she mentioned that she is trying to organise travel packages for the Royal AM supporters so we can make our way to Eswatini. She added she remains fully committed to Royal AM – at least for now. "Personally, I'm still a card-carrying member of Royal AM, so I will become a Highlanders AM supporter once I receive their supporters' card. Interest from Eswatini is already pouring in. "I have been receiving many calls from Highlanders AM supporters in Eswatini, inviting me to join them. They want me to be part of their fanbase. Yesterday, I dominated all the front pages in Eswatini. And while Highlanders is a much larger club in that region, Mama Joy insists her loyalty is still tied to the original team – until told otherwise. "Highlanders is a huge team in Eswatini, with many more supporters compared to Royal AM, and they have qualified for the top eight. However, I am waiting for the Royal AM management to tell me what our next steps will be." Last week, the Durban businesswoman insisted on Robert Marawa's show on 947 that she did not buy the Eswatini club after she was appointed as their president. After her unveiling as their new president, she immediately rebranded the club Mbabane Highlanders AM. Mbabane Highlanders are the most successful team in Eswatini with 13 league titles to their name. However, they haven't been champions since 2001. In April, the PSL voted to kick MaMkhize's Royal AM out of the league. Royal AM had been placed under auction to recoup some of the R40 million that Mkhize owed to SARS. After an extensive bidding process, Durban businessman Roy Moodley appeared to have won the race to purchase the club, but after he could not cough up the funds, the sale collapsed, and the league decided to kick the club out. 'Here we go!': Fabrizio Romano announces Zim artist's show in viral video

Fabrizio Romano, the globally recognised football journalist famous for breaking transfer news with his trademark 'Here we go!', has shocked fans in Zimbabwe after appearing in a short video announcing Winky D's upcoming concert. The clip, shared by Winky D himself on social media, shows Romano casually delivering the news as if he was confirming a football deal. 'Winky D, The Gaffa to Alex Sports Club, here we go! The deal is done,' Fabrizio announces in the video. 'Saturday, 30 August 2025 at Alex Sports Club. Stay tuned for more updates, and it's a here we go!' The unexpected crossover between the world of football journalism and Zimdancehall royalty has left many people talking, with some celebrating it as a major publicity win and others questioning whether the video is real or AI-generated. To make things even more interesting, Fabrizio Romano dropped a comment under Winky D's Instagram post, simply saying: 'It's a here we go.' He didn't explain much. For many, it was the confirmation they needed. Social media quickly lit up with reactions, as thousands of fans, both local and abroad, tried to figure out what just happened. 'Fabrizio Romano shouting out The Gaffa? This is peak 2025,' one fan posted on Facebook. Others were so convinced, saying that the haters will think it is an AI-generated video. Here is how others reacted: @AndileSinyolo: 'Always expect the unexpected from the Gaffa.' @CosmasMakucha: 'I took off my hat, respect.' @EugineMakura ' When you are big, you are big.' Born Wallace Chirumiko, Winky D is a Zimbabwean artist with a loyal following in the country and beyond. Known as 'The Gaffa,' he rose to fame with his unique blend of Zimdancehall, reggae, and Afro-beats. Fabrizio Romano's video about artists is rare, especially for a Zimbabwean.
