Outrageous star had ‘mental block' delivering her ‘offensive' dialogue

Actress Joanna Vanderham admits she had difficulty wrapping her head around her character's fascist views in the new period drama, Outrageous
Outrageous star Joanna Vanderham admits she was uncomfortable with some of the dialogue she had to say as historical fascist figure Diana Mitford in the new series.
U and U&Drama's six-part period drama reveals more about the life of iconic author Nancy Mitford (played by Bessie Carter) and her five sisters.

In the 1930s, with war looming and women struggling to find a place in society outside the home, the Mitfords stood out as rebels and pioneers amongst their aristocratic peers.

However, their rise to notoriety threatened to fracture the family as both Diana and their younger sister Unity (Shannon Watson) began to associate with British Fascists and Nazis.
Reach caught up with Vanderham at Outrageous' London premiere and asked if she found the role of a notable Nazi sympathiser challenging.
'Absolutely,' she said. 'Diana has a couple of lines that refer to what was happening at the time, and I personally found them quite difficult to deliver.
'I'm usually really quick to learn lines, they go in in an instant. But, for some reason, there was like a mental block of, 'I don't want to say this!'
'So some of those political lines, those were hard to say.'

Written by Sarah Williams, this new period drama is a must-watch for fans of Downton Abbey, but be warned - it's a historical series like no other.
Outrageous takes an unflinching look at the role of British aristocrats in the years leading up to the Second World War, proving not everyone was on the right side of history.
Viewers will also get to know one of the most infamous wealthy families of the 20th Century better than ever before.

'What's so remarkable about Sarah's writing is so much of it is about what's between the lines and what's unsaid, the subtext of it,' Vanderham added.
'Which a) I think is really British, but b) when you have a family, you can have those silent communications and the little nods that's sort of like, 'Go on, do it', 'Go on, say it', 'Oh my God! You're not going to say that!' And it's just all silent.
'That's what lends itself to the fact that this was a real family and we were just really lucky to get to spend time together beforehand to really create that camaraderie.'
The riveting new series is now streaming completely for free, so there's no excuse not to get totally scandalised by this shocking corner of history.
Outrageous is available to stream on U, U&Drama and Britbox.

Shock reason pop star Dannii Minogue has been spotted in her hometown of Melbourne - after living in the UK for 30 years

, who lived in the UK for 30 years, looked very sad on Thursday when she was spotted out and about in Melbourne. She could be seen taking comfort from young Aussie actor Harrison Popple as she fought back tears. But all was not as it seems, as the Australian pop star, 53, was in St Kilda filming scenes for her glamorous TV comeback on a new Channel 5 drama, Imposter. The singer, who moved back Down Under in 2021 to be closer to her family, proved she's still got what it takes to be a screen star, decades after she quit acting. While filming, the hitmaker was garbed in a summery dress with watercolour and horse detailing. She topped it with a baby blue trench-coat and matching wedge heels as she shot emotional scenes with her co-star. Dannii appeared overjoyed to be on-set, opting for a natural glam look as she left her tresses down in loose waves. In between takes, Dannii could be seen keeping warm in a fluffy pink robe and comfortable boots as she ran lines with Harrison. She made sure to stay hydrated, keeping a water bottle clutched in her manicured hands whenever she took a break. One scene saw the star looking morose as she sat down at a picnic table with her fellow actors. Dannii got her start as a small screen darling on Young Talent Time and Home and Away, but jetted off to London in the early '90s to pursue global fame. Three decades after she left acting behind, the superstar is set to return to screens in the four-part murder mystery Imposter. The Aussie star will share the screen with former Coronation Street UK favourite Kym Marsh and Neighbours legend Jackie Woodburne. Jackie, 69, looked almost unrecognisable from her Susan Kennedy days, now sporting a much more mature look with silver hair. Dannii was a vision in baby blue while on set The cast were spotted on set in Melbourne, with filming underway in St Kilda where the popular eatery Riva was dressed as O'Riley On The Pier Hotel for the production. Melbourne will host all the filming, with other Aussie TV stars, Don Hany and Jane Harber, also spotted on set. Imposter is said to be centred around a murder at a seaside resort. Jackie will play matriarch Helen, whose refusal to sell her seaside hotel sparks a dramatic family feud with her three adult children. The series marks Jackie's first non-Neighbours role in more than 30 years. The plot thickens when Amanda, played by Kym, arrives claiming to be Helen's long-lost daughter given up for adoption years ago. As Amanda integrates into the family, doubts arise about her true identity, leading to a gripping tale of deception and betrayal that culminates in murder. Jackie had played beloved Neighbours character Susan, the wife of co-star Alan Fletcher's character Dr Karl Kennedy, since 1994. Since leaving Home and Away in 1990, Dannii has had a successful career, starring on The X Factor and more recently fronting the dating show I Kissed A Boy.

TV tonight: Jodie Whittaker stars in a glossy Aussie drama with a dark twist

9.30pm, ITV1 Wealthy women glugging wine? Check. A dark secret from the past exposed? Check! This Liane Moriarty-coded Aussie drama (which streamed on ITVX in 2023) tells the story of Simone (Nicole da Silva) who is about to publish her first novel, One Night, which is based on a devastating event that happened 20 years earlier. But when her two estranged friends Tess (Jodie Whittaker) and Hat (Yael Stone) re-enter her life, it becomes clear that they were a bigger part of the story than she was. HR 8.10pm, Channel 4 Why was Japan so reluctant to surrender at the end of the second world war? This documentary explores the second half of 1945 – the European war was over, nuclear bombs had been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki but Japan fought on. Factors included military 'honour' and Emperor Hirohito's status as an apparently infallible living god. Phil Harrison 9pm, BBC Four The Beck team, weakened by their staff being suspended from work or traumatised by it, look into the case of a sexist podcaster whose throat has been cut. The denouement, with the instability of Vilhelm (Valter Skarsgård) ready to cause further calamity, is super-tense. Jack Seale 9pm, U&Drama The epic tale of revenge continues with Dantès (Sam Claflin) finally escaping prison. He befriends a fellow fugitive who helps him find the hidden treasure that Abbé Faria (Jeremy Irons) told him about. Before that, the most precious item Dantès could discover is a razor to get rid of that ridiculous beard. HR 9.10pm, BBC One Letting Nicola Walker address the camera as Scotland-based detective Annika Stranhed still makes this crime drama feel fresh and alive. Her musings here on Jekyll and Hyde lead us into the case of a slain millionaire, but the real drama is in Annika's odd work/family unit: the interplay between Walker and Jamie Sives as DS Michael McAndrews is beautifully brittle. JS 9.10pm, Channel 4 Griff Rhys Jones continues his rollicking journey and this week ends up in Birmingham, Alabama – considered the 'true' deep south and which, according to Jones, is the state that Americans least want to visit. But a rise in hi-tech organisations means that more people are moving there. HR Night Always Comes, out now, Netflix Musician/author Willy Vlautin's modern noir novel is brought to the screen in gritty style by two alumni of The Crown – director Benjamin Caron and lead Vanessa Kirby – though the subject matter couldn't be more different. Set over a taut 24 hours, it follows Kirby's Lynette as she races around the city to find the $25,000 needed to buy her home before she, her brother and feckless mother are evicted. A drip-feed of revelations about her traumatic past life accompany the desperate quest, with Kirby superb as a woman torn between what she wants and what she needs. Simon Wardell Ill Met By Moonlight, 3pm, U&Yesterday The great British partnership of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger was nearing its end in 1957 when they produced this fact-based second world war drama. It isn't up there with their many classics (Powell himself was particularly scathing about it) but there's a surprising jollity to its story of a mission to kidnap a German general (Marius Goring) in 1944 Crete and spirit him off the island. Dirk Bogarde is the nonchalant leader of the operation, Maj 'Paddy' Leigh Fermor, while the local resistance are a fun-loving bunch despite the occupation. SW Hounds, 10.30pm, BBC Four In a Casablanca far from the tourist traps, petty criminal Hassan (Abdellatif Masstouri) and his as-yet untainted son Isaam (Ayoub Elaid) are hired by Hassan's boss to abduct a man. Unfortunately, the victim suffocates in their van, so they set off across the city in an error-strewn attempt to dispose of the body before daylight. Kamal Lazraq's neorealist Cannes winner offers a raw but sometimes comic closeup on the underbelly of Moroccan society, while the shifts in the father-son relationship give the film dramatic heft, despite the leads being nonprofessional. SW Premier League Football: Aston Villa v Newcastle, 11am, TNT Sport 1 Followed by Wolves v Man City at 5pm on Sky Sports Main Event. Championship Football: Wrexham v West Brom, noon, ITV1 From StōK Racecourse. Athletics: Diamond League Silesia, 3pm, BBC Two The 12th meeting, from Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, Poland.
