Calgary Stampeders weather delay, knock off top-spot Saskatchewan Roughriders

How's this for a shocker? The top-spot Calgary Stampeders.

It wasn't what many fans — if any — expected to see from a team in transition coming into the 2025 Canadian Football League campaign.
Article content
Yet after Saturday's smoke-delayed — and dominate — victory over the host Saskatchewan Roughriders, there are the Stampeders on top of the CFL standings with a surprising 4-1 record.

It's the second straight week the Stamps have knocked off an unbeaten team on the schedule — this one in 24-10 fashion at Regina's Mosaic Stadium.

'We came up with the win,' an excited Stampeders rookie receiver Damien Alford, one of the stars of the triumph in Saskatchewan, told QR Calgary post-game.
Article content
'We've put ourselves in the mindset that no matter who was in front of us, we just have to go out there and play our type of football — and that's exactly what we did.'
Article content
Indeed, a week after dispatching of the undefeated Winnipeg Blue Bombers on the home turf of McMahon Stadium, the Stamps travelled to Regina to play the 4-0 Roughriders as the heavy underdog again.
Article content
When they arrived Friday, however, they were met not only by long odds but a smoke delay that created a health hazard and persisted throughout the evening, postponing the game overnight.

But that didn't distract the Red and White from going out and continuing to prove they have quickly meshed into a strong CFL side — solid enough to get the mighty road win and climb into first place in not only the West Division but the entire league.

Five Roughrider storylines as team looks to rebound against Lions

BC Lions receiver Phillip Brooks (88) runs the football against the Saskatchewan Roughriders during the second half of CFL football action in Regina, Saturday, June 28, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Heywood Yu Coming off their first loss of 2025, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are looking to bounce back on the road against the B.C. Lions. 'We had some miscommunications [and] we had some just brain farts, for lack of a better term,' head coach Corey Mace put bluntly after practice Thursday. 'It was disheartening to see, [it's] usually not in our makeup. But again, we have a core group of guys returning and they know the expectations. They know how we want to get things done.' In Week 6, the Riders lost to Calgary to fall to 4-1 on the year, and out of first place in the Canadian Football League's (CFL) West Division. B.C. (3-3) is coming off two-straight victories over Montreal and Edmonton and are fourth place in the West. It is the two teams' second matchup of the year. Saskatchewan beat the Lions 37-18 in Week 4. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Heywood Yu (Heywood Yu/The Canadian Press) Emilus returns for Riders Star Roughrider receiver Sam Emilus is back in the lineup for Saskatchewan. The fourth-year wideout missed each of the past two games for the Riders with a foot injury. 'It's easy to make sure I'm back 100 per cent,' Emilus told reporters Wednesday. 'I always say, we have a strong group and everybody can make plays. And we shown that.' In two games this season, Emilus has 12 catches on 16 targets for 170 yards receiving. He was not in the lineup the last time the Riders took on the Lions. 'It's been tough [not playing],' the receiver admitted. 'But also we understand it's a long season and we've got to be smart.' Receiving committee In Emilus' absence, the Rider receiving core has seen its share of rotation. Against the Lions in Week 4 with back-up Jake Maier at the helm, six separate Roughriders made catches, combining for 170 yards receiving. Last week against the Stampeders, Saskatchewan's pass game totaled 425 yards through the air – 191 yards on 11 catches out of Joe Robustelli. 'Every week, it might be someone different stepping up,' Emilus said. 'We already know somebody's going to step up for this game.' 'We beat them three weeks ago; it's a big game for [B.C.] at home. And they're rolling right now. You have to be ready to face it head on,' he added. Being behind against the Stamps last week, Saskatchewan was forced to abandon the run game. Offensive coordinator Marc Mueller hopes to be more balanced this week. 'The defense can't play one or the other,' he told CTV News. 'You've got to be balanced while doing what you're good at. We need to put our players in the places where they think they can succeed.' When the Lions visited Regina in Week 4, B.C. quarterback Nathan Rourke was a game-time-decision for head coach Buck Pierce. Ultimately, Rourke was unavailable with an oblique injury – forcing back-up Jeremiah Masoli in to start. Since then, Rourke has returned to lead the Lions offense. 'The whole game changes with different quarterback[s],' Riders linebacker A.J. Allen said Thursday. 'It is a matter of preparing for what's going to happen. There's not going to be the same playbook when you have someone like Nathan Rourke down.' 'It's learning. They've play[ed] two games after that and things have changed,' he added. Nathan Rourke B.C. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Graham Hughes (Graham Hughes/The Canadian Press) Allen said after the Week 6 loss, the Riders created holes for Stamps QB Vernon Adams Jr. – who threw for 428 yards that game. Now facing another star pivot, Allen hoped those holes have been addressed. 'We had a great week of practice and we feel confident,' he said about his defense. 'We feel prepared that we'll be able to rectify those mistakes, get on the right path, get back to playing Rider football and just being us.' 'It's the gift and the curse of being a zone defense,' Mace said. 'If [quarterbacks] find them quick, they're going to be able to capitalize. I'm sure Nathan is going to have a few throws to make people say, 'oh, my goodness, that's Nathan Rourke.' 'But if we can anticipate and make plays or understand where [the ball] is going – we do,' he added. Rourke says he's back to nearly 100 per cent in the pocket. 'Being a short week, there was a bit of a concern,' Rourke told TSN Wednesday. 'I'm feeling good so that bodes well for this weekend.' The Lions' QB has thrown nearly 700 yards over the past two games. 'There's a certain mindset I have to be in,' Rourke added. 'A certain confidence, certain trust with the system and the guys I'm playing with. And when everything is right, you have more poise to see and trust what you're doing. When you do that, you play very decisive.' James Butler While the Roughriders' struggled to find their rushing game last week, B.C.'s took off. Lions' RB James Butler had a career-high 171 rushing yards last week, while adding 35 receiving yards. In the teams' Week 4 matchup, he had 123 and 26, respectively. 'They got guys who can go up and get it if the ball's thrown up and they've got guys who can blow the top off a defense,' Mace said about the Lions. 'But it's a matchup we feel we can meet. Lions, Roughriders BC Lions running back James Butler (20) is tackled by Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Kerfalla-Emmanuel Exume (20) and defensive back Nelson Lokombo (25) during the second half of CFL football action in Regina, Saturday, June 28, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Heywood Yu (Heywood Yu/The Canadian Press) Harris record watch, again Last week, Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris completed 81.8 per cent (36-of-44) of his attempts, tying his and Dane Evans's CFL record of eight consecutive starts with 70+ per cent completion rate. He is a career 9-3 against B.C. Rourke is 2-2 in his career versus the Riders. Kickoff for Saturday's game is 5 p.m. Saskatchewan time on TSN.

Inside the CFL: Alouettes are mishmash of good and bad at one-third mark

Article content The CFL season is a marathon, not a sprint. Article content While the Alouettes (4-2) sit atop the East Division at the one-third mark of the season, it might prove to be meaningless once the weather turns cold in October and November — especially if starting quarterback Davis Alexander, sidelined yet again with a hamstring injury, is out for another prolonged period. Article content Montreal was 5-1 at this point last season and finished with the league's best record (12-5-1). Yet its players were sitting at home when Toronto defeated Winnipeg in the Grey Cup. Article content Article content Nonetheless, six games into an 18-game season is a good time to sit back and reflect on what we've seen and what we'd like to see moving forward — not that Als management necessarily will listen. Article content Article content Positive: We should no longer wonder whether Alexander is the real deal. He might have been third on the depth chart last season, but seized his opportunity when Cody Fajardo suffered — coincidentally — a hamstring injury. Alexander has won all eight games he has started, dating to last season, tying a CFL record held by Danny McManus. Article content But it's more than that. Montreal's offence has a different feel to it when Alexander — unpredictable, mobile and explosive — is on the field. He rallied the Als from an 18-point third-quarter deficit against the Argonauts on Thursday night, passing for 196 yards during the second half. Article content However, Alexander only lasted one game before reinjuring his left hamstring — something that forced him to miss two full games over a month. We can't imagine his recovery will be any shorter this time. Article content Article content Negative: While it's unfair to put all the blame on McLeod Bethel-Thompson, the Als lost two games when he replaced Alexander. Bethel-Thompson is accurate in practice, but not so much in games. And while he can still move at age 37, he lacks Alexander's mobility and moxie. Article content Bethel-Thompson passed for 3,748 yards with Edmonton last season, but the Elks' record was 3-10 when he played. While third-string QB Caleb Evans is mobile, we don't believe he's the solution, either. With coming games at Calgary, against Saskatchewan and Edmonton, and at B.C. during the next month, the Als' 4-2 record could quickly change for the worse. Article content Positive: Much like the Canadiens under head coach Martin St. Louis, there's no quit in the Als under Jason Maas. Article content We had the Als written off in the third quarter against Toronto while trailing 25-7. But Montreal scored 19 unanswered points, a total that would have been higher except for two unsuccessful two-point conversion attempts. It was the largest comeback by the Als since Sept. 21, 2019, when the team overcame a 24-point deficit against Winnipeg.

Stampeders continue CFL dominance with 41-20 win over Bombers

The Calgary Stampeders continued their dominance of the CFL on Friday night. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. completed 16 of 24 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Stampeders to a 41-20 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Calgary improved to 5-1 and sits alone atop the CFL's West Division. Winnipeg dropped to 3-2 before a sold-out crowd of 32,343 at Princess Auto Stadium, an eighth straight full house. 'It feels great but the work's not done,' said Adams, who also threw one interception. 'We've got to get back tomorrow, watch the film, learn from the mistakes. I know I had quite a few out there, so I've got to get better from that and get back to work.' Calgary, however, has posted three straight dominant wins. 'Yeah, we've got confidence, for sure,' Adams said. 'We know we're a good team but we're not going to stop working. We've just got to keep working.' Adams completed TD throws of 37 and 42 yards to Damien Alford before finding Dominique Rhymes with a three-yard toss. Alexander stages last-minute comeback for Alouettes over Argos, but hurts hamstring Calgary's defence also picked off Winnipeg's quarterbacks four times, with Damon Webb intercepting a Chris Streveler pass and returning it 15 yards for a touchdown. The convert gave the Stamps a 38-13 lead early in the fourth quarter. 'The defence, man, they've done such a great job all year,' Adams said. 'I keep telling myself, if I can take care of the ball, they're going to give me a chance. They're gonna give us a chance to win.' It was the second time the Stamps stomped Winnipeg in the last three weeks. They beat the Bombers 37-16 in Calgary on July 3. Backup quarterback Quincy Vaughn also scored on a one-yard touchdown run. Rene Parades kicked field goals of 32 and 37 yards, and converted all five majors. Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros exited in the second quarter with what's believed to be a concussion after falling to the field from a big hit. 'None of us like to see that,' said Stamps head coach/GM Dave Dickenson, a former CFL QB. 'I've never coached him but I really like the way he plays. I get nervous for him. I've been there … You never like to see other quarterbacks go out with head injuries. I know that affected their team.' Before leaving, Collaros completed eight of 11 passes for 151 yards and a four-yard touchdown to Nic Demski, with two interceptions. Streveler then completed 16 of 25 passes for 130 yards and one late eight-yard touchdown to Kody Case, with two picks. Sergio Castillo kicked field goals of 46 and 58 yards, and converted both TDs. 'Losing never feels good, especially in front of our home fans,' Streveler said. 'We've got the best fans in the league and we didn't play up to our standard today. But we're going to use this feeling to fuel us to have a good week of preparation next week.' The momentum switched after Adrian Greene picked off Streveler in the red zone with the Bombers threatening early in the third quarter. The Stamps scored on the ensuing drive to take a 24-13 lead. 'Obviously, you can't throw picks in the red zone, right?' Streveler said. 'So, we've got to take care of the ball, especially in a close game like that. That's on me, I gotta be better.' The Bombers got beaten badly by the Stamps in two straight games. 'It's ugly,' said Bombers running back Brady Oliveira, who rushed for 68 yards on 15 carries. 'I'm not even sure about this one. It feels a little weird because it was so close. It's not like the last outing with them where it really got out of hand quickly into the game. But we're in it. We knew we had to go into the second half and fight, but it just got away from us. 'We need to give credit to Calgary. They've been playing really good ball the last number of weeks. And they were the better team out there tonight. It's unfortunate to have a result like that in front of our home crowd. We're so much better than that. I don't care what everyone else thinks, but deep down I know we're so much better than that. The only way you get out of hard times is work.' Fans welcomed Bombers legend Milt Stegall back with a standing ovation before the game. Stegall, who was on the sidelines, returned to the TSN panel this weekend for the first time since the sudden death of his son, Chase. 'That (tribute) was amazing,' Dickenson said. 'I actually had a tear in my eye.' The Bombers travel to Toronto to take on the Argos in a Grey Cup rematch on Saturday. The Stampeders return to Calgary to host the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday.
