Maharashtra board Std I textbooks include ChildLine & Pocso helpline numbers to promote child safety awareness

Time of India01-07-2025
Nashik: The Maharashtra State Board textbooks for Standard I, published by Balbharti, now feature the ChildLine helpline number 1089 on the penultimate page of all subjects. This initiative aims to raise awareness among children to seek assistance from the organisation dedicated to child safety.
The textbooks also include information about "good and bad touch" and the Pocso helpline.
Praveen Aher, the project coordinator of ChildLine Nashik, said, "ChildLine is a 24-hour toll-free emergency phone service that offers immediate legal help for children in need of care and protection (CNCP). It can be accessed by anybody by dialling 1089. The same number has now been printed on the penultimate page of the textbooks of Std I after the textbooks were revised and printed as per the National Education Policy (NEP).
" He added as the books are updated for new standards each year, the helpline number will continue to be included.
The primary beneficiaries of this information are the children. Aher said, "This new book will be handled by a large number of students from school, home, and relatives and neighbours out of curiosity, and they will come across this ChildLine message. Some children face a lot of issues, but don't know what to do.
For them, ChildLine comes into the picture. Children or any adult can seek help from the system, but only for the help of a minor.
"
Kunda Shinde, a school teacher in a Nashik Municipal Corporation school, said the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act message is also included in the textbook. "A small message appealing to the children to 'press e-box' button available on ncpcr@gov.in if someone touches them inappropriately and seek help under the provision of Pocso has also been printed on the page," she said.
Shinde added, "It is another way of getting the system into the children's world and attempting to secure the environment for them."
Shinde conducted an exercise with the children and dialled the number. She said, "Children were attentively listening to it. The receivers of the ChildLine phone number introduced themselves to the children, and the children told them about the school. The children and parents present even noted the number. We will be conducting more such sessions for all the parents and the children soon."

Karnataka SEP recommends sex education, RTE expansion

BENGALURU: The State Education Policy (SEP) has recommended the introduction of 'comprehensive sex education' among the programmes designed for pre-university students (Classes 11 and 12) apart from a Comprehensive Curriculum for School Education. The curriculum regarding sex education would go beyond basic reproductive biology to cover topics such as emotional well-being, consent, gender sensitivity, prevention of abuse, and ways to address the changes occurring due to hormonal changes, The New Indian Express learnt through multiple sources. Explaining why the commission recommends it at PU level and not at Class 9-10 level, SEP members argued that younger students may lack the emotional maturity to fully grasp and contextualise the subject. Introducing it earlier, they said, would not be 'grade-appropriate' and could lead to misunderstanding or misuse of the information. SEP members said their recommendation also draws from the rising number of cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which reflect that many adolescents face assault and abuse without adequate understanding of consent and decision-making. They, however, believe this knowledge should be provided when students are at a 'right age' and better equipped to process it.

CBSE launches hub & spoke model to support student well being

Nagpur: CBSE has launched the Counselling Hub & Spoke School Model for the 2025–26 academic session, aiming to enhance mental health and socio-emotional learning support across its affiliated schools. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This structured initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and seeks to promote holistic student development through psychosocial well-being and career guidance within a collaborative school network. Under the Hub & Spoke Model, designated 'Hub' schools act as resource and training centres, mentoring eight to ten 'Spoke' schools in their respective regions. Hub schools are selected based on criteria including a minimum of 10 years of operation, experienced leadership, and established counselling infrastructure. These Hub schools provide strategic guidance, professional development, training sessions, and resources to ensure the consistent delivery of mental health services. Spoke schools, typically with limited counselling infrastructure but a commitment to growth, participate in monthly meetings, implement wellness programmes, and share best practices within the network. The model focuses on four primary objectives: raising awareness of mental health resources, ensuring accessible counselling services, encouraging the utilisation of support systems, and fostering student advocacy for well-being. The Activity Calendar outlines initiatives such as self-awareness exercises, emotional literacy programmes, and digital safety workshops, tailored for students from foundational to secondary stages. Additionally, teachers, parents, and support staff are engaged through targeted training and workshops to establish a comprehensive support ecosystem. Implementation involves monthly meetings, detailed documentation, and regular reporting to monitor progress and refine practices. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Hub schools submit consolidated reports by the fifth of each month, while Spoke schools provide activity-specific updates. The model also promotes additional initiatives like mental health clubs and art therapy to enhance student engagement. By fostering collaboration and standardising counselling frameworks, the CBSE Counselling Hub & Spoke School Model aims to create safe, inclusive, and supportive educational environments, ensuring that every student has access to sustained emotional and academic guidance.

Explained: What CBSE's Career Guidance, Counselling Initiatives Aim To Achieve

In a step aimed at strengthening psychosocial support and career readiness among school students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has launched two flagship initiatives-the CBSE Career Guidance Dashboard and the Counselling Hub and Spoke School Model-for the academic year 2025-26. The move comes as part of CBSE's broader push to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 goals on student wellness, socio-emotional learning (SEL), and future-ready skill development. What's New? The Career Guidance Dashboard, accessible at serves as a one-stop platform offering curated resources for students exploring career pathways. It provides tools for aptitude assessment, subject-wise career information, and decision-making support, helping students make informed choices aligned with their interests and strengths. Parallelly, CBSE has also rolled out the Counselling Hub and Spoke School Model, a structured network of "hub" and "spoke" schools, where trained counselors from designated hub schools will mentor counselors and wellness teachers in 8 to 10 spoke schools. The aim is to streamline counseling services, enhance psychosocial support, and build capacity within schools. Reinforcing Mental Health and SEL The hub-and-spoke framework is designed around key principles: Creating safe spaces for students and educators Promoting peer-led community support Encouraging best-practice sharing Building an inter-disciplinary approach to mental health support The model prioritises early identification of students' mental health needs, preventive care, and a culture of wellness through monthly meetings, training sessions, and collaborative learning. Crisis response protocols, burnout prevention, and age-appropriate wellness activities are also part of the model. Aligning with NEP 2020 Goals These initiatives reflect CBSE's commitment to making psychosocial support systems and career guidance more accessible, accountable, and standardised across its affiliated schools. Under the NEP 2020 framework, CBSE is focusing on: Appointing qualified counselors or wellness teachers in every school Providing capacity-building training for educators, counselors, and parents Creating professional networks for knowledge exchange Embedding SEL into school culture through sustained programs Over 200 counselors have already been trained as Master Trainers, and schools have been urged to adopt the model seriously to ensure a consistent and supportive environment for students. Next Steps For Schools CBSE has called on all affiliated institutions to: Identify and nominate hub and spoke schools Ensure participation in the counseling network Actively use the Career Dashboard in classrooms Implement mental health and well-being programs under the new model The initiatives are aimed at building a supportive ecosystem where students don't just succeed academically but also thrive emotionally and professionally. By institutionalising structured support at every level, CBSE hopes to create schools that are not just centres of learning but also safe, nurturing environments for holistic development.
