Moncton's building permits surpass year-end total for 2024
Building permits in one of Canada's fastest growing cities continues to rise.
Year-to-date building permits have reached $309.7 million, which is a higher amount than what was posted for the entire year in 2024, said the City of Moncton in a news release.
That number is only $56 million short of the highest building permit year on the city's record – $366 million in 2022.
For the second quarter, building permits totaled $112.1 million, a 21 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Deputy Mayor Paulette Thériault said the first half of the year has been very impressive.
'We are particularly pleased with the development we are seeing in the residential sector, which is very much needed to support our growing population, and with the continued commercial and institutional investments,' said Thériault.
A total of 365 building permits were issued between April and June. The city said the growth is driven by dynamic residential, institutional, and commercial development activity.
Residential construction has included 800 units representing a total investment of $117 million, a 70 per cent increase in the number of units compared to the same period in 2024. It accounts for 49 per cent of the quarter's building permit volume – a total value of $55.3 million.
The City of Moncton's Director of Economic Development Luc Babineau said the city is delivering a balanced mix of development.
'These numbers reflect the ongoing interest from investors and the City's efforts to support development that meets the needs of our growing community,' said Babineau.
Major projects for the quarter include a $17.3 million, 143-unit apartment building at 260 Millennium Boulevard and a $8.8 million, 63-unit development at 32 Marriott Drive
The quarter saw 17 permits awarded for government and other institutions, for a total of $37.5 million. This included major initiatives such as a $20.6 million renovation to establish a public health laboratory at 330 Université Avenue and a $1.3 million renovation to expand the Oulton College facility on Elmwood Drive to accommodate a nursing lab.
Commercial and industrial construction permits came in at $17.5 million which include a $3.3-million project to build a new lemur exhibit at Magnetic Hill Zoo and a $3.2-million project to replace the roof cap sheet at one of the city's two Walmart locations.

But even if a deal is struck, it is likely some tariffs are here to stay. Also: It's been one of the deadliest days in Gaza for Palestinians seeking aid. Users can attach the trailer to the bicycle of their choice and return it to any BIXI station after use. Those with a BIXI subscription can rent a trailer for four hours for $4. After that, users will be charged 20 cents per minute. Without a subscription, the trailer costs $8 for four hours in addition to a $100 deposit. The 20 cents per additional minute beyond four hours rate also applies in this case. The trailers will only be available in Montreal, but the company says the service may be expanded when more become available.

B.C. man to plan dream Alaska fishing trip after $1M lottery win
Mackenzie resident Sim Chua will embark on his dream fishing trip to Alaska after winning $1 Million from Lotto 6/49. When B.C. man Sim Chua first found out he was going to be $1 million richer, he had only one thing on his mind – the picturesque rivers of Alaska and their abundant salmon and trout populations. The Mackenzie resident and avid fisherman had checked his winning ticket at the lotto kiosk inside the Mackenzie Mall on Mackenzie Boulevard, the same place he had bought it from prior to the May 14 Lotto 6/49 draw. 'I passed it to the retailer,' recalled Chua when detailing his win to the B.C. Lottery Corporation. 'Before scanning, she was telling me about how someone won $1 million in Mackenzie. Then she scanned the ticket and then said, 'Hey, it's you!'' Chua said he was most excited to share the news with his sister, whose ear-splitting response was one of pure surprise. 'She was just screaming so much on the phone. She couldn't believe it!' Still coming to terms with news of the life-changing win, Chua says the knowledge that he is now a millionaire still hasn't quite sunk in. 'I don't know what to do with myself,' he said. 'It's still unreal to me.' One thing he does know for certain is how the cash will be spent. Chua plans to use some of his winnings to purchase a new car, and to visit his ultimate vacation destination of Alaska. The 'dream trip' will involve plenty of fly fishing, he said. The odds of winning the main Lotto 6/49 jackpot – which requires matching all six numbers drawn without using the bonus number – are approximately one in 14 million, according to the BCLC. The odds of winning a guaranteed prize of $1 million or more in the Gold Ball Draw depend on the number of tickets sold.
