2025 Spelling Bee: How two central Ohio kids did in preliminaries
Fifteen kids from Ohio are among the 243 spellers in the 2025 competition with the preliminary round taking place on Tuesday. Among those Ohioans is Columbus-native Avinav Prem Anand, 14, who is sponsored by the Blue Jackets and is competing in his fourth consecutive spelling bee.
The eighth grader from Orange Middle School had his best finish last year when he came in 22nd place. He is also moving on to Wednesday's quarterfinals after spelling 'Sapporo' right and correctly defining expostulate as his vocabulary question.

Making his spelling bee debut is 10-year-old Joseph Keffer, a fifth grader from Athens at Chesapeake Middle School. He is being sponsored by Ohio University's journalism school and is one of the three youngest competitors from the Buckeye State.
Keffer spelled the word 'furan' correctly and got his multiple-choice vocabulary question correct, sending him to the quarterfinals. Anand and Keffer are two of 183 spellers to advance to the quarterfinals, which begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
If Anand and Keffer can stay perfect in spelling, they will compete in Wednesday night's semifinals and hope to appear in Thursday evening's finals.
In the 100-year history of the Spelling Bee, nine Ohioans have won with all hailing from either Akron, Cleveland, or Canton. The first Ohioan to win was Dean Lucas of Akron in 1927, the third edition of the Bee. The most recent Ohio winner was Anamika Veeramani of Cleveland in 2010.

Fresh off of leading the Buckeyes to a national championship last season, Ryan Day is once again reportedly dipping into the NFL's talent pool to add to Ohio State's coaching staff. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Day and the Bucks are looking to bring another ex-Patriots assistant to Columbus for the school's upcoming campaign. Per Thamel: "Ohio State is expected to add former Miami Dolphins DC and longtime NFL assistant coach Josh Boyer to the coaching staff. He brings a long familiarity with DC Matt Patricia, as Boyer worked for the Patriots from 2006-2018 and won three Super Bowls." The Buckeyes ranked No. 1 in the country on the defensive side of the ball in 2024, and Matt Patricia is looking to keep that going this fall as he attempts to put his fingerprints on OSU's scheme. "We have great coaches that are here, that were here last year, and I think it's my job to really kind of make sure I'm adapting and learning to what we did really well last year because, obviously, it was great," Patricia told reporters (via Eleven Warriors). "We have great coaches that coach these guys really well and develop these players at a high level. From that standpoint, there'll be some things that are very similar to what everybody's used to," Patricia continued. "I maybe teach a little bit differently… It's more conceptual and big picture and things like that ... to put guys in different roles." Boyer last coached for the Miami Dolphins from 2019-2022 after rising through the ranks with the Pats and working his way up from defensive assistant to cornerbacks coach under Bill Belichick. Patricia's time in Foxborough nearly mirrored Boyer's where he coached linebackers and safeties from 2006-2011 before being elevated to co-defensive coordinator from 2012-2017 and eventually taking the Lions head coaching job a year after that. Both Belichick disciples collected their share of hardware over the course of their decade-plus runs in New England. One Of Cam Atkinson's Team Records Is In Kirill Marchenko's Sights
Former CBJ legend Cam Atkinson is at the top of many stat categories for the Jackets. After all, he did play 627 games before the trade to Philadelphia. Atkinson is currently the owner of two records for the Blue Jackets: Short-Handed Goals(16) and Hat Tricks(6). Of these two, only one is on the verge of being broken, and that's Hat Tricks. Atkinson's six hat tricks are one ahead of retired legend Rick Nash, and three above the next player. That player is Kirill Marchenko, who, in just two seasons, is already third on the career hat trick list. That's either an indictment of the Blue Jackets and their inability to score goals for the last 25 years, or an indication that Kirill Marchenko is going to be a menace for many years to come. It's probably both to be honest. Kirill Marchenko has a chance to catch Cam Atkinson this upcoming season if he can put together a fourth season straight of excellent play, specifically goal scoring. In his first three years, he's scored 75 goals and totaled 141 points. Three hat tricks in a season are not out of the realm of possibility for young Marchenko. If he keeps shooting the puck, he could score 40 next year, but that all depends on whether he can step up his production on the power play. He only scored two, yes, two power-play goals last season, and that has to change. Kirill Marchenko, after just three-plus seasons, could force his way to the top of the CBJ record books, and we're here for it. He could also move into the top-8 in all-time goals as well, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. Kirill Marchenko is on his way to becoming an all-time Jacket.
