Woman sheds 4 stone(25 kilos) in 4 months on Mounjaro, then suffers liver failure—how the drug works and its risks

Aimee Chapman, 34, from Southampton, lost four stone in just four months using Mounjaro—but her rapid transformation came at a devastating cost. The former waitress was admitted to intensive care last summer with liver failure and a perforated oesophagus, complications doctors directly linked to the weight-loss injection.

Chapman had purchased Mounjaro from a major online pharmacy in March 2024, hoping that losing weight would help her be 'taken more seriously' by doctors after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain disorder.
At first, the results were everything she hoped for. But just a few months in, her health began to unravel.
"I couldn't really do much. I was only eating a couple of times a week," she said. "I stopped being able to walk.
I would take a couple of steps and have to stop. Then I couldn't stop being sick. I was throwing up all the time and started throwing up blood. I was sick between 50 and 60 times."
Chapman collapsed multiple times. "My husband came home and found me passed out on the hallway one night," she said. Initially, she believed it was a virus. 'I was in a bit of denial about it being linked to the jab because I was fine up until now.'
It wasn't until she experienced severe chest pains that she went to Winchester Hospital A&E.
There, doctors discovered a hole in her oesophagus—allowing air to leak around her heart and lungs. As her blood pressure and potassium levels dropped, she was transferred to intensive care at Southampton General Hospital, where doctors found her liver was 'failing.' A transplant was considered.
"They had said it was down to the weight-loss jab but they didn't know why or how to fix it," she said. "I was terrified. It all happened so quickly… I was told the hole in the oesophagus can kill people and I may have needed a new liver.

They said I could've died."
Though her condition was stabilized within two weeks, her ordeal continued. By September, she began losing large clumps of hair—eventually diagnosed as a vitamin B12 deficiency. 'It kept happening and the handfuls kept getting bigger. I would be so sad,' she said. 'My hair was such a massive part of my identity and to cut it off just felt really traumatic.'
While she doesn't want to 'tell people what they can and can't take,' Chapman says, 'I regret ever taking them.
I'd say to other people thinking about trying them, don't do it online, go through your doctor who can give you blood tests and check how you're doing.'

‘Must take proactive steps'—PM Modi reiterates concern over obesity crisis in I-Day address

Modi reinforced his previous recommendations to address this, urging families to purchase 10 percent less cooking oil, and reduce its consumption by the same margin on a regular basis. 'When discussing fitness, I am compelled to raise an important concern. Obesity is becoming a significant challenge that every family should take seriously. We must take proactive steps to protect ourselves from it,' the prime minister said. New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again raised concerns about the issue of obesity, stressing on the need for collective action to tackle the crisis. In his address at Red Fort in Delhi on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, Modi highlighted expert forecasts indicating that one in every three individuals in the country could become obese in near future. A 2023 survey by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) had shown that 25.4 crore Indians or 28.6 percent of the population had generalised obesity. This survey had estimated the number of people with abdominal obesity at 351 million, or 39.5 percent of the population. The ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition, in its dietary guidelines last year, had noted that there is rising prevalence of overweight and obesity in several states, adding that 56.4 percent of India's total disease burden is due to unhealthy diets with a major focus on carbohydrates. Obesity, now recognised as a chronic, relapsing disease, is a major risk factor for diabetes, and is found to be linked to over 200 health complications, including hypertension, dyslipidemia or high blood cholesterol, coronary heart disease, some types of cancers and obstructive sleep apnea, among others. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines overweight and obesity in adults using body mass index. Those with a BMI between 25 and 30 kilograms per square metre are considered overweight, while people with a BMI of more than 30 kilograms per square metre are classified as obese. However, according to experts, India has a larger problem of abdominal obesity, characterised by fat deposition around crucial internal organs, but comparatively thinner limbs, which throws its own set of challenges. The growing obesity crisis has prompted Modi, on several occasions this year, to make a pitch for efforts to curb the epidemic. In his monthly radio broadcast in February, he had first called on people to reduce the use of cooking oils commonly found in unhealthy food. He had also previously urged people to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle in order to prevent obesity. This year, India saw the launch of two drugs—Wegovy by Novo Nordisk and Mounjaro by Eli Lilly and Company—that have been global smash hits for years for obesity treatment exclusively. FDA launches festive campaign to ensure food standards in the state

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday launched a special campaign titled 'San Maharashtracha, Sankalp Anna Surakshathika Abhiyan,' to ensure hygiene and safety standards in the food sold during the upcoming festive seasons of Ganeshotsav, Eid, Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali in the state from August 11 to October 25. The campaign includes sudden inspections of eateries to keep in check food adulteration and ensure compliance with hygiene standards. The authority is also set to organise workshops to spread awareness about the standards to be met. FDA launches festive campaign to ensure food standards in the state The initiative was launched on Monday by the FDA secretary Dheeraj Kumar, along with FDA commissioner Rajesh Narvekar and senior department officials at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, followed by a training session for food professionals, aiming at educating traders on hygiene practices and legal compliance during the high-demand festive period. 'During festivals, the demand for sweets, modaks, faral and prasad skyrockets. This is when the risk of adulteration increases, as some traders may cut corners due to supply shortages,' FDA secretary Dheeraj Kumar said. Food businesses should strictly follow food safety standards, avoid malpractices, and ensure products are wholesome and hygienic, he added. 'We are increasing the number of food testing labs in the state. We are also working on providing manpower for the department.' FDA commissioner Rajesh Narvekar said, 'Adulteration is often detected when market demand exceeds supply. Through our training, we hope traders will comply fully with the law so that festivals can be celebrated without compromising health.' As part of the campaign, workshops on food hygiene will be conducted for those handling mandals, sweet manufacturers, and women's self-help groups that prepare festive foods. The authority will also carry out surprise inspections of food outlets, sweet shops, street vendors and production units across the state, including Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
